AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

@AnnoyingVegan
Are you ok? You went to sleep on Thursday and haven't been back.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/01/2020 16:04

@ffswhatnext because they knew that they would cause a stir, hence the name probably.

spongejack · 12/01/2020 16:06

@iamadalek2 why would someone else's (a large amount of the world's populations diet) upset the IP! Get over it and stop trying to force your vegan views on us, then when you get it back they won't be upset.

I don't see one single poster on here saying you've made a good point veganism is the way forward.

I'm
Upset by saying o support murder, does that count?

I don’t have kids or pets and I cycle to work. I also grow most of my own veg on my allotment.

Ah HA! We have the answer, folks. Don’t have kids. Don’t own pets. Make sure you find a job (no matter how crappy or low paying) that is close enough to your home such that you can bike or walk to work. Make sure you find a house/apartment with space for a garden and find the time to grow all of the plant food you’ll ever need.

Great and hilarious rationalisations in this thread. The 4Ns – that is, the belief that eating meat is natural, normal, necessary, and nice – are common rationalizations people use to defend their choice of eating of eating meat. And it’s all CRAP.
Barbecue your dog instead,

spongejack · 12/01/2020 16:17

@Singlewhiteguineapig nah won't BBW the dog he's a family pet, but some prawns and big juicy steak, bring it in! 😋

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 16:18

Barbecue your dog instead,

You don't eat what you named🙄 I thought everyone knows that

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/01/2020 16:19

@singlewithguineapig, we were not brought up on eating family pets.

Borkins · 12/01/2020 16:22

I'm sick of preachy Veganism being rammed down my throat.
It's a fad. Not based in true scientific fact. It's the way of the world at the moment. People dismissing science and expert opinion because you know it's all a conspiracy theory and let's just blindly follow populist opinion. It's why we have Trump and Boris.
I get and respect that people might not want to eat animals a or their products. So make that choice. But don't ram it down my throat.
What about make up, clothing?
Oh and there is bollocks all evidence that is based in quantitative, RCTs with large unbiased cohorts that support it for health reasons.
Soy is bad environmentally too.
What about the farming community. How the fuck they supposed to make a living
Oh and personally whilst I don't like cruelty to animals (obviously), I think I'd rather the effort went into the abondoned, abused children of the world than herds of sheep.

"The 4 Ns"

This doesn't sound like soundbite propaganda at all!

PanicAndRun · 12/01/2020 16:34

Barbecue your dog instead,

I don't have a dog.
I'm fussy.
It depends how desperate for food I was.Grin

Nope. The meat of carnivores is rank. I'll stick with herbivores raised for the purpose, thanks.

SciFiRules · 12/01/2020 16:50

@singlewithguineapig
It is normal to eat meat (maths), it is nice (opinion), it's necessary to eat (biology) it's natural for a human to be omnivorous (just why else would I have incisors)
I'd happily eat dog or horse but sainsbury's doesn't stock it - knowingly!

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 16:50

I actually heard that dog is quite delicious. I would eat a dog. Just not mine😂
Kind of like I would eat someone from outside of family only too😂

eminencegrise · 12/01/2020 16:51

I don't have a dog. I have a cat who kills mice left and right. I don't feel guilty or need to justify eating meat. Mmm.

SciFiRules · 12/01/2020 16:52

I'd also support eating cats... far too many around anyway!

JulietJanuary · 12/01/2020 16:55

There is a case for eating grey squirrel in the UK.

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 16:59

There is a case for eating grey squirrel in the UK.

There are also online butchers selling it!

MaxNormal · 12/01/2020 17:01

JulietJanuary and this place will provide said squirrel.

JulietJanuary · 12/01/2020 17:06

I'm not volunteering! Thanks for linking though.

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 17:10

I would

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 17:13

I am going to bug dh now 😂

The vegan society recommends soy formula which is sub-optimal.

Anybody who recommends sub-optimal nutrients for a baby in any situations other than necessity, is an actual idiot. Anyone who actually feeds their child that as a choice, is a psychopath.

What the Vegan Society actually says is:

Breast is best
Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of your baby’s life. It is also recommended that you continue to breastfeed until your child is at least two years old.

If breastfeeding is not an option, infant formula is recommended. Soya-based infant formula can be fed to vegan infants when breastfeeding is not an option, but please speak to your health visitor or doctor before using it.
