AIBU to think there’s no justification for eating meat and dairy any more?

People are educated now. People know that eating meat and dairy is disastrous for the planet. People know it’s causing an unprecedented climate crisis. People know it causes untold cruelty to animals.

So why are people still doing it? There is a vegan substitute for virtually every meat and dairy product you can think of. What is going on here?

The number of people I’ve seen on social media breaking their hearts over Australia shooting wild camels and horses because they drink too much water while still eating beef blows my mind.

And those are just a few of them.

It is so important to get childhood and particular infant nutrition right and while it is probably possible to do that on a vegan diet, it's much easier to get it wrong than on an omnivorous or vegetarian diet.

The prime motivation of veganism is morality, not childhood nutrition. Ergo, it is not a suitable basis for childhood nutrition.

differentnameforthis · 12/01/2020 01:24

@iamadalek2 There is no reason for anyone to be eating meat now.

Allergies?
Intolerances?

As I said, I need to follow a low fodmap diet or (on extreme days) run the risk of shitting myself in public.

Many plant based foods/vegatables/fruits are high in fodmaps, therefore I cannot follow a vegan diet.

squeekums · 12/01/2020 06:00

People's only justification is that they like the taste
Yep and I don't feel in the slightest bit bad or guilty.
Even cultural don't get me.

You wanna eat vegan, knock yourself out. Don't expect others to join the cult

Oh and BTW
murder
/ˈməːdə/
noun
noun: murder; plural noun: murders
1.
the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another

Note human being. In no definition in googles top answers from top dictionaries were animals specified

@differentnameforthis

Allergies? Intolerances? Wow so are you allergic to vegetables and fruit? Are you saying you can only eat plates of meat?

spongejack · 12/01/2020 09:27

@Boshmama no mass murder is involved in slaughtering animals! If you're not able to have a rationale discussion without extreme hysteria and ridiculous use of the word murder, then you're better off keeping quiet.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/01/2020 09:38

Is it so hard to believe that people can't eat a completely plant based diet? Someone upthread explained about the FODMAP diet.

I have acid reflux so eat very little fruit. I also have other issues that mean too many vegetables give me a very upset stomach and I can't eat mushrooms at all. I don't eat ' plates of meat' but can only have small portions of veg. I'm not swapping the meat for more veg and being ill every day!

Butterbeeeen · 12/01/2020 09:44

I might be a bit naive but we have eaten meat and meat products for many many hundreds air thousands of years. The planet was perfectly fine then. Its not the eating of a animal products that is wrecking our planet its everything else. The cars, the factory's and things that have come from modern society. I'm refusing to believe that me cutting out animal products is going to save this shambles of a planet.

SaaauuusierGrrr · 12/01/2020 09:49

@spongejack

Hysteria is an absolutely horrible and condescending way to describe someone's ethical beliefs and it says far more about you than anything else here.

Many people all over the world do think that the slaughter of sentient creatures for human pleasure and profit is comparable to murder.

You don't have the right to call it hysteria just because you feel threatened by having the morality of your behavior called into question.

spongejack · 12/01/2020 09:54

@SaaauuusierGrrr it's not murder, that's an hysterical description and that's the end of it! Murder is the killing of a HUMAN!

It's hysteria like using the word murder that's makes arguments like yours invalid.

Talk sense and people might listen.

feetfreckles · 12/01/2020 09:59

Butterbeeen we ate meat, but generally not a lot and there were far fewer of us

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 10:02

I think lack of meat causes delusions.
Like a delusion that if you attack someone, call them thick and immoral murderers and such they will still listen to you and take your arguments seriously 🤦

This is NOT how debates should be had but it is a great example of why people don't like vegans.

Trewser · 12/01/2020 10:04

I think Corbynistas may have eaten the same vegan diet, in that case.

spongejack · 12/01/2020 10:04

Those cases are heartbreaking, how can parents be so cruel to their own children? I had read about the Australian case before but hadn't realised it had happened so often. When doctors are having to give legal opinions because multiple children are being left malnourished and even dead it is time for governments to act and for public education campaigns to prevent more suffering.

SciFiRules · 12/01/2020 10:14

I'm evolved to eat meat and vegetable matter. I'm appalled at the court ruling recently but it does finally do one thing, identify that veagaism is a religion not a science!
I'm content with the current agricultural system, it means I can feed myself and my family well. I do think that there is a place for vegans though... come the apocalypse the carnivores will need something to eat!

SaaauuusierGrrr · 12/01/2020 10:23

@AllergicToAMop and @spongejack

I'm sorry you feel attacked.

Of course you're absolutely right, people should just live and let live because god forbid we hurt the precious feelings (and profit margins) of people who condone and fund the torture and abuse of animals.

Sorry again, wouldn't want to come across as one of those crazy nutjobs who thinks it's morally wrong to inflict needless pain, death and suffering on a helpless creature. That would just be sooooo hysterical, right?

AllergicToAMop · 12/01/2020 10:29

🤦

spongejack · 12/01/2020 10:30

@SaaauuusierGrrr* yet more hysteria!

SaaauuusierGrrr · 12/01/2020 10:33

@spongejack I'm confused, are you saying that the meat industry doesn't do this?

HunterAngel · 12/01/2020 10:38

I don’t hate vegans. I don’t hate anything. That takes a certain amount of energy that I just don’t care to give. Yes I eat meat, I happen to enjoy it. You don’t, that’s fine by me. Your life, your choice. Just don’t preach to me about it.

spongejack · 12/01/2020 10:40

@SaaauuusierGrrr you're confused? Try eating some red meat?

bingbangbing · 12/01/2020 10:40

Comparing killing an animal to killing a human is disrespectful to those people have been murdered, not to mention their families. You loose the argument at that point.

@wesleekittimourously

It's horrendous isn't it- there are now hundereds of families doing it across the uk now and it's on the increase. People putting the health of their children at risk because of their "principles".

Why on earth would the happiness of some random cow matter more than the health of your own child?

The NHS advice on infant veganism will probably change in the next few years as more research is done and more cases come to light.

TroysMammy · 12/01/2020 10:45

AnnoyingVegan people are going to die anyway with or without climate change. People have been dying for years.
