BUT ... why should we pay for them? How come they get to keep Frogmore cottage, which WE the tax payer have paid for? And we have just paid over 2 million for them to renovate it???

If they want to go their seperate ways from Royal duties, FINE...... BUT , if they do that, they surely should relinquish the perks (i.e. the house, cars, money that comes with the job) and do what the rest of us do - earn their own.

If the RF all went, there would be lots more politics with a President, we would need lots of restructure to the unwritten constitution, (the crown is responsible for state care system for example) lose historical buildings, have to fund new housing for a President, elections etc and fund security for both. I prefer a slimmed down status quo.

I do understand how you feel about all this and it's good that some posters are reasonable as most mumsnetters are ( mostly ) republican on here ( not all , but many are ) nothing wrong with that point of view of course!
It's hard being a normal person trying your best, working hard and not having much money left at the end of the month then reading about these people who have millions in the bank and are moaning about it! It's an unfair world and all this just breeds resentment.
Even if they were to abolish the Royals the president / prime minister ( or whoever was in charge ) would still be costing money ; nothing much would change really. The homes and palaces may become just museums but the taxpayer would still have to upkeep them all in some capacity or other. The money wouldn't really filter down to the ones that need it.
We live in an unjust world and it is hard when your doing your best knowing you'll never have what they have got but then lots of us will never have what they have.
None of them seem that happy and being related to the likes of Prince Andrew certainly wouldn't make me happy , even if I did live in luxury for ever! Being part of that family must be really hard work.
I do under why people are upset about all this but there isn't much any of us can do. There will also be a an ' establishment ' and rich people ; it's never really been any different.
