How many funerals have you been to

grimreaper1 · 08/01/2020 11:49

First off, I'm aware this is morbid and I don't want to upset anyone, but I'm currently studying grief and loss and becoming aware of how much bereavement I have experienced.

I'm 35 years old and I've lost 6 family members, a close friend, a teenage neighbour, accompanied two close relations to funerals of people I also knew and have had a pregnancy loss. So 10 funerals and a miscarriage.

I was just wondering if others had experienced the same or less or more? I don't know if it's changed my experience of death.

AIBU in thinking it's a lot for someone my age?

TopOftheNaughtyList · 08/01/2020 13:59

Mid 50s and I've lost count but it's more than 15. All but one have been cremations.

AJPTaylor · 08/01/2020 14:04

Great grandparent
Dad
2 grandparents
Both pil
Sister in law
Friends dad
So 8, I'm 52

Baaaahhhhh · 08/01/2020 14:08

I am 52 and have only been to 3 - a very low number compared to pp's.

My dad died when I was 24, my best friend when he was only 40 (that was awful), and my next door neighbour who was a very good friend, but very poorly, and was 70.

Large family, but haven't attended other very elderly relatives funerals as they live in other countries, and were therefore buried quickly, or we weren't close, or they all died when I was much younger or not even born!

Besidesthepoint · 08/01/2020 14:10

3 grandparents
Mum
My daughter
2 aunts
Ex MIL
Nephew
Friend
FIL
Friends dad

Adds up to 12, but I have a feeling that I'm missing a few. I'm 40 years old.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 08/01/2020 14:14

40 and I've been to 3, and wont go to any more

A childhood friends mum when I was a teen, then those of my 2 children.

I hate funerals and refuse to attend any now.

Bibijayne · 08/01/2020 14:15
  1. Both in the last two years.
Blondeshavemorefun · 08/01/2020 14:20

Far too many

My husband

My mum

A close friend

2 employers

Uncle

All taken too young

Let alone grandparents and elderly friends /neighbors and relatives

EBearhug · 08/01/2020 14:21

Now 47- since I was 11 - 3 grandparents (possibly 4, but I would have been 1 at the time.) 2 parents, 2 schoolfriends, 5 great-aunts, 1 great-uncle, at least 4 of my parents' friends. So that's 17. There are others I would have gone to if logistics allowed.

Fluffyunicorns · 08/01/2020 14:51

Im 50 and have been to 4

2 x grandfathers
1 x grandmothers
1 x husband

My 14 year old just attended her first - joint funeral for her father and her grandmother - she didn't want me to go with her as didn't feel her fathers family would want me there. Not going was harder than going

TimeIhadaNameChange · 08/01/2020 14:56

38 and at least 20.
The first I remember was my dad's, when I was 6.

hellsbellsmelons · 08/01/2020 15:01

Nan
Auntie Jean
Auntie Pat
Uncle Phil
Cheryl
Mick
Auntie Barb
ExBF dad
Little sis
ExH mum
Maybe add one in case I've missed something
So 11 and I'm 51!
Although never had a granddad on either side or a Nan on my dads side.

I'm so sorry @Clangus00 for all of your losses.

LittleCandle · 08/01/2020 15:06

I'm 54, and I've been to thousands, but I have been a church organist for most of my life and that is why the number is so high. At many of those, I could have been a mourner, too.

Glitterblue · 08/01/2020 15:06

3 grandparents
2 friends of my granny
2 great aunties
Mother in law
Family friend
Friend's dad
I have one on Friday, DD's godfather

MrsToothyBitch · 08/01/2020 15:15

I'm 29 & I've been to 3.

Grandad
Uncle
Family friend

My grandma didn't have a funeral- she had no last wishes & none of us were inclined to arrange one with so little personal input and there were so few people who could or would go that we didn't have one.

wishihadagoodone · 08/01/2020 15:19

Like the other Irish people here, I've been to countless and I'm in my early 30's.
Many where I haven't known the deceased but to show support for a friend/work colleague who lost a family member or close friend.
Where I'm from, it's also common to attend the wake (usually in the deceased home or their family home) to offer condolences, bring food or tea/coffee and share stories as well as attending the funeral.
Normally the first night of the wake is family only but others are welcome on the other two days/evenings.

Timepasses · 08/01/2020 15:37

I'm 42 and been to 19 funerals. Mainly close family.

Marellaspirit · 08/01/2020 16:15

I've been to about 9 or 10 funerals. Nearly all of them were elderly relatives or friends of the family, one was my uncle who died suddenly aged 52-this was the one that hit me the hardest despite not being close to him.

Onthebrink87 · 08/01/2020 16:18

I'm 32 and attended 6

FIL
GM
great uncle
Sisters friend at 17 😭
Cousins little baby 7 weeks (v traumatic)
Neighbour

elliejjtiny · 08/01/2020 16:19

I'm 37 and have been to loads, but then I work in a church! Been to 6 as a guest.

Onthebrink87 · 08/01/2020 16:19

7 sorry, old school friend who passed from cancer at 26

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 08/01/2020 16:26

I’m 48 and have been to:
4 x grandparents
DP’s dad
DP’s uncle
2 good friends
Owner of shop where I worked

Doesn’t sound like many for my age I know, but I live in another country from where I grew up and spent early adulthood, so it has to be a close 2nd with for me to head back to the UK.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 08/01/2020 16:26

Sorry a close friend or relative!

AppropriateAdult · 08/01/2020 16:27

Irish here so lots - maybe one or two a year since my teens, and a few as a younger child? In terms of losses I've been lucky enough to still have all my immediate family with me, but I've lost all four grandparents, an aunt, an uncle, two cousins (as infants), a school friend as a teenager and another a few years later. The other funerals would have been more distant relatives and in-laws, neighbours, parents of friends etc.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/01/2020 16:31

I'm 49 and am about to attend my 10th funeral. Lost 2 very good friends in the last couple of years, just awful.
