Olivia Colman Golden Globes win...

I’m shocked OC won the golden globe for best actress in a tv series last night.

How on earth did she beat Jodie Comer, from Killing Eve?

She’s a decent actress but I can’t see her abilities justifying all these awards. Tbh, she ruined series 3 of The Crown for me. Does Hollywood automatically give all awards to anyone portraying a member of the royal family? Seems that way.

I'm not enjoying her in The Crown to be honest.

Love Olivia but beginning to think she is a bit of a one trick pony.

I used to feel the same way about Meryl Streep.

aSofaNearYou · 06/01/2020 10:36

Tbh I watched and enjoyed Killing Eve because I think people are getting way over the top about it. Loads of mentions in "TV show of the decade" type polls, yet it's only had two seasons and only one of them was anything special. Series 2 wasn't even that good so I would imagine that has contributed to why the haven't swept all the awards, though I agree Jodie Comer is good in it. She's not the only good actress out there though and I have seen more amazing performances from OC, albeit in other roles.

GinDaddy · 06/01/2020 10:38

Couldn't agree more, but I think awards are often given to people because they were overlooked for better work, but suddenly they're a "name" that awards judges can't look past.

It's like they want to award it to the person who is on the crest of a wave in public, who has magazine covers and articles written about them etc. Jodie Comer is fantastic but she's not yet a "name" with some of that lot. Olivia Coleman, like it or not, is.

Denzel winning for Training Day a few years back is a classic example, also see The Departed winning awards etc.

Jodie Comer should have won hands down, her work is excellent and it's in the here and the now.

Earlgreybee · 06/01/2020 10:38

Tbh I much prefer Olivia Colman to the couple of episodes of killing eve I’ve seen. I really like Jodie comer, she seems really lovely and super talented and I hope she does really well etc, but I really do love OC.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/01/2020 10:40

Agree with Gin. Martin Scorsese should have won for Goodfellas years ago. Robbed, he was Angry

Trewser · 06/01/2020 10:43

Killing Eve was overrated, well l, definitely the second series

Love OC. JC has years to win.

Tobias Menzies is brilliant in the Crown, i was sad he didnt win.

justcly · 06/01/2020 10:43

OC gets right up my nose. Same simpering, girlish schtick every time she wins an award. FFS, grow up, woman!

DuchessofWoke · 06/01/2020 10:46

I knew before she opened her mouth she’d do the usual “oh, golly gosh, little old me? This is just lovely and you’re all marvellous and I haven’t a clue what to say. I’m so lucky and, oh gosh, shall I say fuck, just to shock you all and get a laugh?”

I am sick of OC and her little girl voice and am hoping this is the start of the end of her being in EVERY SODDING THING, even adverts.

She was fine before her recent ubiquity.

Mockers2020Vision · 06/01/2020 10:47

We know where we are with this. Any British actor plays any British royal and the yanks take leave of their senses.

Also very annoyed that the best song didn't go to Mary Steenburgen for "Glasgow".

GinDaddy · 06/01/2020 10:49

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz

Exactly! I think the Academy gave it to him for The Departed (an admittedly very strong film) because...well...it's time to give Scorsese an award, he's been overlooked for too long.

It gives them a "name" to hang all the press coverage off, everyone is happy, except the young hopeful who made the most outstanding work that year..

motherheroic · 06/01/2020 10:51

The second series of Killing Eve doesn't have the Phoebe Waller touch and everyone has felt it.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 06/01/2020 10:58

I watched and enjoyed Succession but I don’t think that Brian Cox was the best actor in it (he wasn’t bad, just not quite as good as Jeremy Strong IMO) and Tobias Menzies was robbed

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/01/2020 11:00

She’s flavour of the the month at the moment and I do Like her but feel like she’s the same in everything.

HoneysuckleSpeck · 06/01/2020 11:04

Omg this!!

I used to LOVE Olivia C - she was my “Watch it just because she’s in it” actress - but I’m starting to get irritated by the very sight of her because of all the fluttery faux modesty.

JanusLooksBothWays · 06/01/2020 11:07

Killing Eve massively over rated and Jodie good but not very good.

Haven't watched The Crown, not my taste as all but OC is real quality. In my top ten now somewhere near Dame Judy

SillyUnMurphy · 06/01/2020 11:09

I can’t stand Olivia ‘the same in every single acting gig’ Colman. She has ruined The Crown.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/01/2020 11:15

I was surprised she won tbh as I was expecting the award to go to Jennifer Aniston who really is excellent in The Morning Show, as well as being a favourite with the Globes.

longwayoff · 06/01/2020 11:19

Don't give a damn about awards ceremonies, back slapping self congratulation but Ricky Gervaise seems to have summed it up adequately. I knew he must have a purpose. This was it.

cheezy · 06/01/2020 11:19

I agree that OC is becoming a bit samey in her last few roles but I’ll never ever forget her in Tyrannosaur, and for that reason I can look past the criticisms that other have mentioned.

medb22 · 06/01/2020 11:22

I like Olivia Colman and I don't think she has ruined The Crown - she hasn't been given much to work with by the writers, to be honest. She has good range, I think, but she has played a lot of queen-y roles lately, which hasn't helped I suppose.

I thought Jodie Comer was good in Killing Eve and certainly much better than Sandra Oh, who won it last year for that show. I haven't seen the other shows, so can't comment on those performances. So broadly, I agree that Comer should have won the Globe, but that's because The Crown is generally a bit shit this season and not specifically because of Olivia Colman.

ScrambledSmegs · 06/01/2020 11:23

A friend has become friends with OC and says she's lovely, very modest and bemused by all of the media fuss over her. She'd been acting for years before all of the attention so I doubt she takes it seriously anyway.

Awards are mostly bollocks anyway - so many talented actors passed over for career-defining roles get them years later for lesser roles as a sort of consolation prize. I don't think it's worth getting annoyed about unless it's something really outrageous.

diddl · 06/01/2020 11:28

I don't think that OC has ruined The Crown, but maybe the way she portrays HM is more suitable to the next series?

I don't think that what was going on was as interesting as the first two?

I was sad that Jared Harris didn't get anything.

Thought he was really good in Chernobyl.

Equanimitas · 06/01/2020 11:29

I think she's very good in The Crown - her acting is clearly very different from her usual style - if anything the reverse of a one-trick pony - and she conveys the character really well. On the other hand, whilst Jodie Comer is very good in Killing Eve, it's essentially a one-trick part: the nature of the character is such that, for instance, she barely has to demonstrate any emotion, and if anything it all became a bit of a caricature in series 2.

@DuchessofWoke It's not what you know, it's WHO you know in that industry.
