Olivia Colman Golden Globes win...

I’m shocked OC won the golden globe for best actress in a tv series last night.

How on earth did she beat Jodie Comer, from Killing Eve?

She’s a decent actress but I can’t see her abilities justifying all these awards. Tbh, she ruined series 3 of The Crown for me. Does Hollywood automatically give all awards to anyone portraying a member of the royal family? Seems that way.

Toward the end of the series she suited it a bit more. But she was paling a 38 year old at the start. She seemed far too old.

Trewser · 06/01/2020 11:39

Wasnt Chernobyl last year? If not its a travesty if it didnt win anything

GnomeStar · 06/01/2020 11:45

Denzel winning for Training Day a few years back is a classic example, also see The Departed winning awards etc

Yep. And Leo for The Revenant!

At the end of the day, the Golden Globe winners are picked by journalists who are obviously influenced by more than just who put in the best performance.

Iamatwatofthehighest · 06/01/2020 11:46

The Americans particularly love when someone plays a person that is living or lived. If you look at the best actor oscar winners for the last 20 years, the overwhelming majority were for portraying non-fictional characters.

SunshineAngel · 06/01/2020 11:46

I really like her as an actress, BUT I really, really don't enjoy her in The Crown. I understand why the actors needed to change because of age etc, but I really much preferred the ones from the first series, and it feels like a completely different show now.

Bibidy · 06/01/2020 11:48

Jodie Comer is great but I think people rave about her in Killing Eve because of how excellent she is with her accents, rather than the actual range of her performance.

I think Olivia Colman is a brilliant actress and she actually moved me to tears in the last episode of S3 of The Crown! That said though, I didn't realise it was only moving forward a couple of years from the end of S2 so I don't think there was a need to change the actors at all.

I also found both she and Tobias Menzies (Philip) interpreted and played the characters totally differently to Clare Foy and Matt Smith so the sudden switch in the nature of the characters within such a short time span was difficult for me. Particularly Philip, who seems to go from wildcard to settled and devoted husband overnight between the end of S2 and ep1 of S3.

But that's a criticism of the writing and casting rather than OC, obviously.

Totally agree. I really feel that changing the actors has had a massive impact on character continuity as they're presented so differently in series 3.

loobyloo1234 · 06/01/2020 11:50

She is a fantastic actress. Her acceptance speeches will be criticised either way. Be a bit giddy and act like you don't really deserve it, or act like you aren't surprised you've won. Which should she do?

noodlenosefraggle · 06/01/2020 11:57

I agree. I love OC but Jodie Comer was much better. I dont think OC plays the Queen with enough nuance. I'm rewatching season 1 at the moment. The whole cast is on their A game. Maybe they shouldn't have gone with such well known actors, I dont know. The Golden Globes is just a load of old showbiz hacks voting for the old favourites anyway.

noodlenosefraggle · 06/01/2020 11:59

I understand why they had to change the actors too, but why not do a bigger time jump? Series 3 started in 1964, when series 2 ended. So Claire Foy's Queen gave birth to Prince Edward then a few months later had aged 10 years!

JammieCodger · 06/01/2020 12:01

If you think OC's a one trick pony then you probably haven't watched Tyrannosaur.

CatInTheDaytime · 06/01/2020 12:06

With the Crown I think it's that Claire Foy is such a hard act to follow - I found her totally mesmerising and convincing. But OC is just OC playing the queen, competently, but looking more like OC.

Matt Smith was also great but Tobias Menzies is so very like the real Philip that he's convincing too.

They have to age overnight though, there's no other way surely.

WTFdidwedo · 06/01/2020 12:07

I loved her in Green Wing the best. When I watch her in The Crown I still think of her being sorted into Gryffindor.

DarlingNikita · 06/01/2020 12:10

I'm very much over OC. She was great in Rev and The Thick of It, but tbh by the time even Fleabag came round (and I love Fleabag) I was over it.

She isn't that good in The Crown IMO. Claire Foy was much better. Matt Smith, for my money, was a better Phil than Tobias Menzies.

Jodie Comer is fresh and exciting and very very talented, I think. I'd have loved to see her win.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 06/01/2020 12:13

Chernobyl won best mini-series and best supporting actor for Stellan Skarsgard. Jared Harris was nominated but didn’t win.

PattyTheBigfoot · 06/01/2020 12:14

I have never seen OC in anything else, apart from the Crown, I gave up after 3 episodes, it is just not the same. She is not a patch on Claire Foy

ScrambledSmegs · 06/01/2020 12:18

Oh WTFdidwedo you've sent me into a GW nostalgia trip. And then I found this on twitter Grin

I also thought killing Eve was over rated. I enjoyed it but it no where near was as good as the hysteria would have you believe. I certainly didn't enjoy it enough to watch the second series.

Personally I like Olivia, anything I've seen her in was excellent, but I've not watched the crown.

DuchessofWoke · 06/01/2020 12:25

I also thought Matt Smith was fantastic as Prince Phillip in the first two seasons of The Crown. Not many people seemed to agree with me. I really thought he captured Phil to a tee.

God, that's a good film. So bloody hard to watch. Eddie Marsan is terrifying in it.

StreetwiseHercules · 06/01/2020 12:27

I’m honestly not a fan of Olivia Coleman’s acting. Find it so often to be so one dimensional and verging on obnoxious.

However, in The Crown I felt that for a change she actually was acting well and I didn’t see Olivia Coleman, I saw the Queen.

And I say that having expected to find her jarring after the excellence of Claire Foy.

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2020 12:27

Yes I was surprised I thought her lacking in The Crown. One good line and lots of staring.

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2020 12:29

Tyrannosaur was the first time I noticed her acting. Such a difficult to watch film and she’s very good.

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2020 12:31

Prince Philip was brilliant in series 3, could even see Wills mannerisms in his acting.

Jodie Comer is intensely good. I was even taken with a Loewe advert she did.

aSofaNearYou · 06/01/2020 12:31

I thought Matt Smith was easily the best performance in it, personally. I find him mesmerising to watch and he stole the show for me, despite lots of good performances all around.
