Olivia Colman Golden Globes win...

I’m shocked OC won the golden globe for best actress in a tv series last night.

How on earth did she beat Jodie Comer, from Killing Eve?

She’s a decent actress but I can’t see her abilities justifying all these awards. Tbh, she ruined series 3 of The Crown for me. Does Hollywood automatically give all awards to anyone portraying a member of the royal family? Seems that way.

Matt Smith was very good too I didn’t like him much as an actor until that

RandomUsernameHere · 06/01/2020 12:35

I much preferred Claire Foy in The Crown, but possibly because I'd gotten so used to her. I much preferred the first two series in general.

JessJonesJumps · 06/01/2020 12:37

I liked Matt Smith in The Crown but I also like OC. I was surprised that she won but not because of her ability, simply because the part wasn't that great. This season of The Crown has been a bit soap opera rather than historical drama.
Jodie Cromer is excellent in everything she is in and I hope she does get recognised eventually.

strictlymomdancing · 06/01/2020 12:39

Don't really care who won what

But I'm so happy that Ricky Gervais told the winners basically to STFU and take the award lol

LuluJakey1 · 06/01/2020 12:39

I knew before she opened her mouth she’d do the usual “oh, golly gosh, little old me? This is just lovely and you’re all marvellous and I haven’t a clue what to say. I’m so lucky and, oh gosh, shall I say fuck, just to shock you all and get a laugh?”
^^ This . She is just irritating and Series 3 of 'The Crown' was very poor-generally but she was weak. Far too old looking to play The Queen who was in her late 30s at the start if Series 3.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/01/2020 12:41

Her acceptance speeches will be criticised either way. Be a bit giddy and act like you don't really deserve it, or act like you aren't surprised you've won. Which should she do?

Channel her inner Queen and say a graceful thank you?

paranoidmum2 · 06/01/2020 12:41

I've only watched a few eps of S1 of KE, but not sure JC is that brilliant in it? The black comedy Nikita role has been done before.

LuluJakey1 · 06/01/2020 12:42

Clare Foy and Matt Smith were much stronger than Coleman and Menzies. The actress who took over the Queen Mother was weak as well- pointless. The strongest were Charles Dance as Mountbatten and Jane Lapotaire as Prince Philip's mum.

DuchessofWoke · 06/01/2020 12:42

I’ve discussed The Crown a fair bit over Christmas with family and friends and the consensus is that you feel you’re watching Olivia Colman and Helena B-C rather than The Queen and Princess Margaret.

I like Olivia Colman - but I think there is a danger seh will start suffering from being gien roles that are similar to ones she has excelled in - that gives the impression that those are the roles she 'does'. Whereas in fact her range is far rgeater than that.

Similar happened to Hugh Grant - he was given all the foppish stuttering uber 'English' romantic leads for years - and became type cast. Now he is older and getting different material to work with he's proving to be a very good character actor.

As or accceptance speeches - what are you really meant to say ' yeah I was a shoe in, ta very much. Byeee' ? False modesty or virtue signalling are par for the course.

Laughterisbest · 06/01/2020 12:52

I would have preferred the same cast for series 3 then a change for the following three series.

Matt Smith was fantastic. I'm a bit disappointed in Tobias Menzies as I thought he was a really good choice but it's probably at least as much the writing to blame.

To me Olivia Colman is ok but H B-C is H B-C and doesn't convey Margaret at all. I also dislike both castings of the Queen Mother, this one particularly.

DarlingNikita · 06/01/2020 12:52

Me either. Never rated him. But he was an absolute revelation in The Crown.

Elderflower14 · 06/01/2020 12:55

I KNEW OC would be drunk.. 🤔
I'm thrilled Taron won.....Gorgeous and humble... I'm old enough to be his Mum but I'm potty about him! Blush

MarshaBradyo · 06/01/2020 12:56

It’s a bit annoying as out of all the performances across the series OC’s was the lack lustre one

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/01/2020 12:59

I thought the Charles and Anne were the standouts in this season of The Crown but it's a shame neither of them got recognised by any awarding bodies.

JessJonesJumps · 06/01/2020 13:02

Laughter that's interesting about the Queen Mum casting. I hated the first one but I like this one slightly better. I did wonder if it was the writing that just wasn't conveying QM to us because it seems odd that no-one has 'shone' in the part.

GiBlues · 06/01/2020 13:03

Never mind the awards Ricky Gervais won last night just for the roasting he gave them all!
He was amazing

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/01/2020 13:19

GI I've just watched some of him on YouTube - hilarious. Some of those celebs look so uncomfortable! I love RG.

Bibidy · 06/01/2020 13:22

They have to age overnight though, there's no other way surely.

Yeah but I think it's because people - me at least! - assumed that the reason they were changing actors was because the series was moving forward 10+ years, but actually S3 begins in the same year as S2 finishes - 1964! So you see Clare Foy giving birth to Prince Edward in March 1964, then S3 starts up in that October with the Queen looking about 15 years older.

I have no issue with changing actors between series (although I did prefer the first set), but at least move the series on a good few years so there's method behind it.

Bibidy · 06/01/2020 13:25

@JessJonesJumps This season of The Crown has been a bit soap opera rather than historical drama.

Totally agree with this.

I found the Aberfan episode was the only one which reminded me of previous seasons - showing actual interaction of the Royals with historical events. Most of S3 has been naval-gazing about Philip's crisis and Charles and Margaret's love lives.

Mrsjayy · 06/01/2020 13:26

I hate when OC wins awards she witters on sqeaks and says nothing it is not endearing you are an actor string a sentence together Angry

Mrsjayy · 06/01/2020 13:28

Squeaks* I sort of ranted on a bit. Didn't killing eve get everything in last years golden globes.

GiBlues · 06/01/2020 13:31

Ive always thought he’s was alright tellme but he absolutely owned it last night. Some of the audience do look very uncomfortable with what he is saying.
Although I don’t know who are worse the ones that look uncomfortable when faced with the truth about themselves or the ones that are sitting there saying “Hahaha how funny, he’s right we’re all a bunch of self righteous pricks, aren't we?!”

missyoumuch · 06/01/2020 13:44

Any British actor plays any British royal and the yanks take leave of their senses.

The Golden Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of non-American journalists who cover film and television. So you’re wrong about the “Yanks,” they’re mostly Europeans.

IfThingsComeInThreesWhyThisNow · 06/01/2020 13:49

I will forgive Colman anything given how stitched up she was in Confetti (her and Webb were promised pixellation when playing nudists - they then went to the premiere to find they were naked throughout).
I read Mitchell's autobiography a few years back - she was clearly destined to do decent things back then - she has certainly paid her dues...if you look at her filmography she has done it all so fair play to her that she's being rewarded a lot now. To a pp: I don't think she was in Thick of it though.
She was good in the Night Manager, I loved The Favourite and I just binge watched Flowers.
Those who want to see Ricky's monologue in full it is posted on his twitter. It was fearless then you realise he actually has to see these people in the aftershow palaver.
