Olivia Colman Golden Globes win...

I’m shocked OC won the golden globe for best actress in a tv series last night.

How on earth did she beat Jodie Comer, from Killing Eve?

She’s a decent actress but I can’t see her abilities justifying all these awards. Tbh, she ruined series 3 of The Crown for me. Does Hollywood automatically give all awards to anyone portraying a member of the royal family? Seems that way.

IfThingsCome, yes, my mistake; I was thinking of Twenty-Twelve where she played a lovelorn secretary.

kmc1111 · 06/01/2020 14:11

I thought she was great in The Crown. No, she didn’t have as much to work with as Claire Foy, but that’s the nature of the role. Once The Queen settled into her position she pretty much made it her mission not to give future biographers much to work with. There’s not a great deal of drama for the show to mine until her children get wrapped up in their own scandals, and even then she left it to Philip to deal with most of that.

Jodie Comer is great in Killing Eve, but the second season went off the rails and it’s rare for actors to be awarded for shows that went downhill that fast.

thought Matt Smith was easily the best performance in it, personally. I find him mesmerising to watch and he stole the show for me, despite lots of good performances all around
Agree with this, yet he didnt win anything for his performance. I think most reviews I see say he was excellent.

Equanimitas · 06/01/2020 16:05

I think people tend not to like her just because they've got used to Claire Foy in the part and she isn't Claire Foy. Whoever takes over from OC will probably get the same reaction.

Playing a one-dimensional person like Villanelle isn't really that difficult when there are no real depths of character to explore. That doesn't detract from Jodie Comer's abilities, but it does mean that that isn't really the part she should win awards for.

Bouledeneige · 06/01/2020 18:28

Did t live OC in the Crown and was disappointed by the whole series, having, to my surprise, loved the previous ones. Clare Foy was luminous and Matt Smith on point.

I think Phoebe could easily have deserved the prize. And as a general point I'm very disappointed that Andrew Scott has t won any awards for his role at any point. He was sublime.

DarlingNikita · 06/01/2020 18:33

Phoebe W-B won in a different category (comedy whereas The Crown is drama).

Agree about Andrew Scott; he's excellent in Fleabag.

noodlenosefraggle · 06/01/2020 18:37

It seems that it's more difficult for men to get awards than women. Probably because there are more good parts written for men than women. Then suddenly the industry is surprised that women actually have stories to tell that arent just 'girlfriend of', 'wife of' or 'mother of' the main (male) star.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 06/01/2020 19:08

My favourite OC role is as the one dimensional but hilarious homicidal Polish spy Minka in Hut 33 (cheap and basic Radio 4 sitcom set in Bletchley Park).

LadyAllegraImelda · 06/01/2020 20:18

I love both actresses, didn't watch The Crown though, adored Killing Eve!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 06/01/2020 20:27

I’ve discussed The Crown a fair bit over Christmas with family and friends and the consensus is that you feel you’re watching Olivia Colman and Helena B-C rather than The Queen and Princess Margaret.

Totally agree with this. With the original cast I totally felt I was watching the real Queen! Colman doesn’t even look like her, neither does Helena BC. I also can’t understand why they have changed eye colour! Her Maj and Margaret have blue eyes, why choose brown eyed actresses to play them, without using contact blue lenses? Weird.

AlexaAmbidextra · 06/01/2020 20:46

Olivia Coleman is so overhyped. She is awful in The Crown.

Bluerussian · 06/01/2020 20:53

I like Olivia Colman. I've watched all of the Crown series 3, twice, and her portrayal of the Queen didn't impress me that much early on but certainly grew on me in later episodes. I never watched Killing Eve so can't comment on that.

ButterflyRuns · 06/01/2020 20:56

In the minority here, but I thought Olivia Colman was great in the The Crown and have only seen one episode of Killing Eve so really can't judge much. That said, I do think Claire Foy did a better job of portraying the Queen.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 06/01/2020 22:23

I know the answer to that one Dexter. They tried blue contacts but Coleman couldn’t tolerate them and the director didn’t like the effect - he also tried and rejected CGI.

Pipstelle · 06/01/2020 22:34

I quite liked HBC as Margaret. It was never going to be easy transition from Foy to OC but it was realllly jarring. They chose to play the role so differently it's like watching a completely different character.

Equanimitas · 06/01/2020 23:14

I think Phoebe could easily have deserved the prize.

She wasn't nominated. She did however win in the comedy category.

Actionhasmagic · 06/01/2020 23:19

I love her but I wanted Jodie to win so bad

HandsOffMyRights · 06/01/2020 23:21

I got bored after just 2 episodes of the second series of Killing Eve.

Enjoyed OC in The Favourite but do find her annoying in interviews (she was on Graham Norton recently) and during acceptance speeches.

I do love My Mad Fat Diary though with Jodie in it. Takes me back to my youth.

MrsBrentford · 07/01/2020 00:28

Broadchurch - was so unrealistic.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/01/2020 03:00

I don't get the fuss over OC. She's ok, I wouldn't say exceptional, in fact every role I've seen her in she is similar. Jodie's role in Killing Eve calls for an incredible range and she always knocks it out of the park, she should have won, even though yes, the second series was pretty shite (especially the middle episodes) Hope the third is an improvement.

newlifenewme2020 · 07/01/2020 15:54

I have found Olivia Coleman annoying for years up the point I can’t watch anything she is in. Her awards acceptance speeches and interviews are annoying as she is trying to come across as this edgy I am one of you guys normal women, and it just come across as so fake

GlummyMcGlummerson · 07/01/2020 16:01

OC's best role was the therapist in "I Give It A Year" when she screams down the phone. Absolutely hilarious! I feel bad for her, it's not her fault she isn't Claire Foy 🙄

agonyauntie2020 · 07/01/2020 16:16

I knew before she opened her mouth she’d do the usual “oh, golly gosh, little old me? This is just lovely and you’re all marvellous and I haven’t a clue what to say. I’m so lucky and, oh gosh, shall I say fuck, just to shock you all and get a laugh?”

This.

She's over-exposed these days, I'm sick of her and I used to be a major fan. If JC could have won it for series one of Killing Eve, instead of Oh, I would have preferred it. I don't think she was so outstanding in series 2 (writing issues as well).

Have discounted every awards show since the travesty of Paltrow winning for simpering shit in Shakespeare in Love.
