Bed wetting guest

My sister had a friend who had a guest with an 11 year old boy child and a 2 year old; The boy was bedded on her new mattress work circa £400.00 just new and wet it. The mother neither merely said sorry; But the hostess is very upset and has not voiced this to her guest; I told my sister that she [the hostess] should seek to claim for damages for the cost of replacement of the mattress from the guests home insurance policy AIBU? Considering, the mattress cannot be washed or dry-cleaned, further the guest did not seek to ensure the mattress was protected, knowing her son had the potential to wet the bed. I personally would have been livid, now the hostess has either to live with the smell or replace the mattress at her on expense.

I think that's harsh.

Yascumbagyamaggot · 04/01/2020 17:40

Can your sister claim on her home insurance?

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 04/01/2020 17:41

Surely the owner of the mattress should have some kind of protector on it? I really don’t think you can ask the boys mum to pay for a new mattress.

InkogKneeToe · 04/01/2020 17:42

Your sister sounds like a shit friend tbh

FredFlinstoneMadeOfBones · 04/01/2020 17:42

I think it was unwise to put the 2 year old on a brand new expensive mattress. I would have been more apologetic if I was the mum of the kid who wet the bed (and I'd have probably popped him in a nappy at 2 if I wasn't confident in someone else's home). I think your sister needs to let it go, it's an annoying accident.

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:42

Is this a joke ?!?!

Onekidnoclue · 04/01/2020 17:43

I’m shocked the guest had such bad manners. Why not warn someone or deal with the consequences??!
Anyway, I’d message the friend saying she’s been scrubbing the mattress and just can’t get the smell out. Say she’d appreciate the friend helping her fix the mess her child made. See how she replies. I wouldn’t go straight in to demands.
Good luck. What a rotten situation.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2020 17:43

Whoever bought the mattress should have put a waterproof mattress protector on it to protect against wetting, puking, nosebleeds, spills, etc.

Why didn’t she have a protector on it? I put mattress protectors on all my mattresses, good waterproof ones cost about a tenner but can save 100s of £ in damaged mattresses.

Mattresses are so easy to stain over time as well from various bodily fluids. Apparently they actually gain weight over time just from sweat and bodily secretions alone Envy Its so easy to whip on a protector!

EntropyRising · 04/01/2020 17:44

You'd be kind of foolish to allow a child on a bed without a mattress protector. I have them on ALL my beds, and my kids are teenagers now.

Also, my dog had a terrible stomach bug and shat all over the guest bed. That was a low chapter, but blessedly it was all magically stripped away with the protector!

I'm afraid she must take it on the chin. She should continue with a rotation of fresh air, a heavy spray of vinegar/sprinkling of baking soda --> leave, vacuum, repeat. It will go away.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2020 17:45

She could try one of those pet urine products on the mattress and that should help with any odour issues

TheNameGames · 04/01/2020 17:45

If I was the host and wanted to maintain the friendship I'd draw it up to 'one of those things' and just ensure there was a mattress protector on there next time. Equally, if I was the friend and wanted to maintain the relationship, I would offer to pay to replace the mattress, even in instalments.

Oakmaiden · 04/01/2020 17:46

The mother neither merely said sorry

Can you clarify- - did the mother say sorry or not?

Either way, 2 year olds sometimes have accidents. It is just one of those things. Surely you friend can claim on her home insurance if it is that big a problem?

TheNameGames · 04/01/2020 17:46

Your sister sounds like a shit friend tbh

It's quite confusing to read but I don't think the sister is the hostess...

FuckingHateRats · 04/01/2020 17:47

You want to ask this woman to claim on her house insurance because her child had an accident staying over? The host has no protector on the brand new mattress?

No. YABU.

Strongmummy · 04/01/2020 17:48

I think it was the 11 year old. Still 11 year olds are known to have accidents. Plus even adults have nose bleeds or periods on mattresses fgs!! You use a protector

dementedpixie · 04/01/2020 17:48

I think it may have been the 11 year old that wet the bed. Regardless, the mattress should have had a protector on it

Sceptre86 · 04/01/2020 17:48

Fairy liquid, warm water, damp cloth and elbow grease for a start. Then air it, the smell will go. Owner should have placed a mattress protector on it and never put kids in a room with a new mattress. The owner is a tad dramatic. Yes the parent should have apologised and they ought to have bought protective sheets or popped the child in a nappy but it was an accident.

JulietTango · 04/01/2020 17:49

I read it as the 11 year old wet the bed not the 2 year old?

Tombliwho · 04/01/2020 17:49

Surely you'd put mattress protector on a guest bed? Especially with kids on it!
The mum should have been apologetic though.
My son wets and I would have brought a couple of his Kylie sheets for staying in a guest bed anyway.

DickDewy · 04/01/2020 17:49

The guest was ill-mannered to not take precautions nor attempt to make amends, but it is one of those things.

If it was a friend of mine, I would not be mentioning it.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2020 17:50

Dd has had both nose bleeds and period leaks in her bed but the mattress protector kept it off the mattress. Ds used to have very occasional pee accidents but again his mattress was ok due to the protector

Riv · 04/01/2020 17:51

A bit late now but surely most people use a washable and preferably waterproof cover on a new mattress as a matter of course! I do with all of mine, even on my own bed.
I just don’t take a risk. Even the most careful person spills their water or morning tea occasionally.

Noideawhatusername · 04/01/2020 17:51

It was the 11 year old boy who had the accident. A normal mattress protection won’t absorb all the urine (I don’t think).
