Bed wetting guest

My sister had a friend who had a guest with an 11 year old boy child and a 2 year old; The boy was bedded on her new mattress work circa £400.00 just new and wet it. The mother neither merely said sorry; But the hostess is very upset and has not voiced this to her guest; I told my sister that she [the hostess] should seek to claim for damages for the cost of replacement of the mattress from the guests home insurance policy AIBU? Considering, the mattress cannot be washed or dry-cleaned, further the guest did not seek to ensure the mattress was protected, knowing her son had the potential to wet the bed. I personally would have been livid, now the hostess has either to live with the smell or replace the mattress at her on expense.

Can't be cleaned? Of course it can. And at least she'll know to use a protector in future

DeathStare · 04/01/2020 21:54

Accidents happen. She should have used a mattress protector. And of course a mattress can be cleaned. If it couldn't be cleaned then parents of toddlers would be replacing mattresses every few weeks!

I'd be pissed off the mum didn't offer to help clean the mattress - that's just bad manners - but I certainly wouldn't be asking her to pay for a new one

Icantfind · 04/01/2020 22:12

All those saying they have mattress protectors- do you have waterproof ones on every bed including your own? As I think waterproof ones are vile to sleep on. I have a quilted one but if someone weed it’d go straight through.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2020 22:17

I have terry towelling waterproof ones. They arent hot or noisy

Daisydoola · 04/01/2020 22:24

Just get it cleaned. No big deal.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 04/01/2020 22:25

God, I obviously have very low standards because I would not consider a mattress with wee on it to be ruined beyond recovery! When my waters broke in the middle of the night, soaking our mattress (through the mattress protector) we just Febreze-d it and will, I assume, both pretend we can't see the stain when we change the sheets forever more.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2020 22:28

Apropos of nothing, @Tigerzmum, most posters hate reverses and wish hellfire and damnation on anyone who posts them.

Anyways, YABU. A new, £400 mattress should have had a protector on it. Your sis should claim from her household insurance.

Coughy4u · 04/01/2020 22:30

Of course it can be cleaned and why the hell was it not adequately protected by mattress protectors?! Ridiculous to expect her to claim on HER home insurance.

Lesson learnt i hope.

By the way ikea mattress protectors absorb adult wee. They are superb.

Aceinthehole · 04/01/2020 22:41

What's a boy child? 🤔

mumxthr33 · 04/01/2020 22:42

It should of had a protector on, I have one on all my beds even though I don't imagine I'll wet myself. I'm afraid it just needs a good deep clean now.

Takemetovegas · 04/01/2020 22:44

Ridiculous. Just clean it. A scrub with water detergent and antiseptic and upend it for drying will fix the mess and smell. Your sister might end up with a water stain but this will not affect the use of the mattress at all.

PlainJane28 · 04/01/2020 22:47

Maybe it’s the many many years I’ve spent in care work..

It’s just a bit of pee fgs

Get over it.

Can think of worse bodily fluids to have on it, and everyone knows you should have a mattress protector on it

Runnerduck34 · 04/01/2020 23:01

Sorry but yabu expecting a guest to replace the.matress. if a 2 year old was sleeping on a guest bed I'd make sure it had a waterproof mattress protector on it. Although the mother should have also ensured this but I'm guessing it was probably a double bed and she didn't have one. When my DC were that age I always took waterproof mattress protectors with.me when going on holiday. The mum should have put pull up pants on in case of accident.
I would Google cleaning a mattress and try the tips on posted on here , then air it , turn it over and put a good quality mattress protector on it and put it down to experience.

CinderellasSecrets · 04/01/2020 23:07

It may well have been a one off incident that the mother had no idea was going to happen, I know that if I had any doubts whatsoever I would be warning the host and making sure there was some sort of protection. Some of the comments here are pretty nasty about an 11 year old child having an accident I'm sure he didn't stand up and aim at the mattress Hmm. Bicarbonate of soda will get the smell out it's a bit crap but lesson learned - mattress protectors are important.

The mother should however have apologised profusely and offered to clean it herself, although if her apology was in front of her son she may have been trying to save him the embarrassment because he must have been mortified.

Tigerzmum · 04/01/2020 23:55

I think there is a difference between wee and the fluid expelled when one's water breaks; Particularly in relation to the odor.

@Aceinthehole Mary’s boy child, aka Jesus Christ

PumpkinP · 05/01/2020 04:07

Tbf, (haven’t read the full thread) but I had a mattress protector on my daughters bed that sId it was waterproof, but when she wet the bed it went straight through! So maybe there was one on the bed, I wouldn’t expect an 11 year old to wet the bed tbh.

LagunaBubbles · 05/01/2020 04:11

The mother neither merely said sorry

What does this mean? Confused

Actionhasmagic · 05/01/2020 04:15

You can get cleaning companies to come and steam clean mattresses - perhaps she could do that as it would be far cheaper than buying a new matress

MiniGuinness · 05/01/2020 04:16

I can't imagine not having mattress protectors on. What about sweat, semen, periods, dribble, urine, cold tea, etc? Incidentally we just replaced my daughter's mattress which had been covered by 3 protectors (maybe overkill, but they were all padded and made the bed like a cloud!) the mattress was absolutely bloody spotless and looked brand new. She has periods, a boyfriend, nosebleeds, etc etc...

schoolcats · 05/01/2020 04:43

She's being unreasonable. We have mattress protectors on all the mattresses in our house in case of somebody being sick, they cost too much not to protect.

MiniGuinness · 05/01/2020 05:08

Not even the biggest wee in the world could ever come close to waters breaking. And if human wee smells after you've cleaned it there is something wrong with your technique.

HoppingPavlova · 05/01/2020 05:21

Yes, wee smells a hell of a lot better. Amniotic fluids smells mire of a minus, definitely more unpleasant.

It’s not that hard, sponge it with hot soapy water, wash it over with wool wash, spray with a spray that’s meant to get animal wee smell out of stuff then stick out in sun to dry. It will be fine. Been there, done that.

Can’t believe host did not have a protector. It’s common sense. What if a guest had a period leak?

I had two occasions where I was very sick, physically could not get out of bed, one of these times ended in hospitalisation. Wet the bed, was sick on it (missed bucket) and had liquid diarrhoea. As I said, ended up being hospitalised, was that ill. Anyway, with the above method our mattress ended up fine, no smell. We ended up getting a new mattress, due to age of the old one no other reason and first thing I did was a good quality, cooling, no sweat waterproof protector.

JolieOBrien · 05/01/2020 05:32

I would get the mattress professionally cleaned and then make sure you have a mattress protector on it in future.

mathanxiety · 05/01/2020 05:48

Rent a steam cleaner, steam clean it, spray afterwards with enzyme cleaner for pet urine, let dry.

The mother should have offered to pay for the cleaning. Or she should have come with her own mattress protector if she knew her DS was a bed wetter.

Not everyone would think to have a mattress protector. I never used them even for my own children.
