To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

I'm off to watch this. I may end up shouting at the iPad as I doubt there is much eschatology behind the series but who knows.

The idea that Jesus will return and that there will be a new creation is mainstream Christian belief. There is a lot of bonkers stuff around about the rapture which the Left Behind novels and films made popular but hopefully this series will avoid all that.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/01/2020 20:18

My best guess is that there was a charismatic leader called Jesus whose followers comforted themselves after his untimely death with a story of his grand return, a return which would allow him to put everything to rights.

And that story just grew and grew.

Littlepeak34 · 03/01/2020 20:27

I was brought up Mormon and we were always given the impression that the second coming would happen in our life times.

I am a complete non believer now - what makes these generations so special over the millions before us. I feel like people just sound mad when they talk about believing in god.

I think the world will end eventually, due to proven physics, not any higher being.

Yes, it is mind boggling how we even exist but I don’t believe there is a ‘God’.

SBGA · 03/01/2020 20:29

If you believe this is the case @SBGA what exactly did Jesus die for? Genuine question, not meaning to be snarky

Not coming across snarky at all - questions are good. The bible says to ask lots of them and be really sure of what you put your trust in.

Jesus died as the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. Before he came, they had to use a substitute, the most perfect blood offering that stood in place until such a time as the perfect sacrifice was made in our place. That's why Jews don't need to sacrifice anymore.
As they sought forgiveness and offered a blood sacrifice to pay for their sins, the Old Testament believers trusted on Gods promise to send a Messiah to them, and the New Testament believers trust in God that he HAS sent the Messiah. The trust in God is accepting his free gift to them, which is forgiveness of all we have done wrong. He forgets and removes our wrongdoing, leaving us white as snow.

BlankTimes · 03/01/2020 20:31

What if the new messiah is a woman?

Puts an end the the patriarchy, promotes the more feminine values like peace, tolerance, love your neighbour and be kind to Mother Earth.

SBGA · 03/01/2020 20:32

What about all the times that it’s been announced that the rapture was coming and then it was conveniently glossed over when nothing happened...? It’s all a load of bollocks.

Can't agree more. What you're saying here is completely biblical, did you know that?! The bible says people will claim they know the date and time but nobody does. That means when people announce its coming they're not talking about the God of the bible and so not talking about Jesus, or they'd know it says you can't know!

gabsdot45 · 03/01/2020 20:32

I believe that Jesus will return to the Earth and when he does there will be no doubt of who he is. I don't know how this will happen but there are predictions in the Bible about it.

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 20:34

@BlankTimes now that would be awesome!!!

OP posts:
SBGA · 03/01/2020 20:35

I've always been terrified that I will go to hell . I always feel weird in churches too, like God is even more intently listening to my thoughts and I'm thinking, 'Must think pure thoughts, must think pure thoughts!'

That's earning your own free gift and it's neither free nor a gift if you've earned it yourself! The whole basis of God's forgiveness is undeserved and yet in his mercy he offers it anyway. You can't make God love you more or accept you more with your good works! Though it's nice if you're nice.

Justanotherlurker · 03/01/2020 20:37

You should have spun this into the islamic second coming and this thread would have gone differently.

I'm ex muslim, I am an atheist but one thing I have noticed on MN over the years is that only one religion is put under this kind of scrutiny.

Rollonspringtime2020 · 03/01/2020 20:38

I think it happened years ago when my sil had her pfb...

Kalifa · 03/01/2020 20:39

There is no need for second coming. What would be the purpose of it? What message hasn’t been delivered by Jesus to humanity? He communicated everything that was/is/ ever will be important: be a good person, love one another, don’t make war, lead a simple life and be content with little, have faith, help others etc...all the fundamentals of life. He did his job already, you just had to listen.

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 20:41

@Justanotherlurker sorry to sound thick but what do you mean?
I thought I encompassed both regions in my OP, but happy to stand totally corrected! I thought from my (very brief and recent) research that both regions believed in a Jesus figure and second coming / messiah?

@Rollonspringtime2020 🤣🤣🤣

OP posts:
CardinalSin · 03/01/2020 20:45

Well, there's also literally no evidence that Mohammad existed either, so same, same...

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 20:45

@SBGA & @Kalifa you’ve both reminded me of a concept I read once that said heaven and hell was the same place.
It’s the concept that upon death you have to sit through and feel / re-live every emotion you’ve rippled out to the world.
So if you’ve brought great love, peace, joy, laughter etc this is what you deal with and I presume move onwards to spirit life / a next life (I believe this was the concept)

But if you brought sadness, negativity to the world you had to face it, feel it and deal with it.
And then I’m not sure what 🤣 so I try and be as nice as I can!!

FizzyIce · 03/01/2020 20:46

Er... no

Warpdrive · 03/01/2020 20:47

For the record I 100% believe He will return.

I've put this on MN before and it was met with much scornful derision, but I say it again, I have been delivered from demons around 20 years ago by the name of Jesus. I know it has happened, and I have experienced the supernatural and I know that he is real, alive and true.

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 20:49

@Warpdrive are you happy to share more?

Everyone’s opinions are fascinating.
Thank you all for sharing. It’s really helping me question things as I grew up being told what to think and believe without being allowed to explore my own thoughts on these things.

OP posts:
newbingepisodes · 03/01/2020 20:49

I'd love to think there would be a second coming.

Twillow · 03/01/2020 20:50

@Warpdrive tell us more! We could write a new Netflix show about it.

I was coming on to say no, though, as I don't believe there was a first Coming. Never had the slightest conviction in religion personally.

Ohtherewearethen · 03/01/2020 20:50

I am an atheist but have always been fascinated by religions and the people who follow them. I remember my school RE teacher telling us that there is apparently 2000x more evidence that a man/preacher called Jesus existed than there is that Julius Caesar existed and it's just a question of faith whether you believe he is the son of God or not. I have nothing to back that up, it's just something I've always remembered. I feel that religion, I'm speaking mainly about Christianity as that's what I have most experience with, is so disgustingly hypocritical that it really makes me think that people are so brainwashed or fearful that they don't dare wake up and speak up about it. The pope on his golden throne, literally sitting on billions, telling starving women in developing countries that using contraception is a sin so she has child after child just to watch them die. Why doesn't the Vatican share some of the vast wealth to help these poor, starving and disease-ridden souls who blindly believe that there is a God who loves them and if they don't they will go the hell?! As though they are living the high life right now? Why doesn't He help them now?
The way unmarried mothers, who were very often rape victims, were treated by 'Godly' people, them and their children raped and beaten, by people who were supposed to be carrying out God's good work is the shame of the nation.
Religion is a widow maker and war causer and has been since time began. It's a way of keeping the masses in line. The reason Catholic priests can't marry is because of the money-hungry corruption in the middle ages. It is so far away from what Jesus preached it's actually incredible.
But, then there's the likes of my nan, a wonderfully sweet lady who says her prayers every night and goes to church every Sunday. She gives what she can to charity in both time and money and will help anybody out and never judges anyone (at least not outwardly) because that's what Jesus would want her to do. She's a really good person and I hope for her sake that there is something to look forward to and she will get her wish of seeing my grandad again one day.

I would just love to hear a believer's genuine perspective on why babies get cancer or starve to death or are abused if there is an all-powerful being that is meant to be all-loving.

Igotthisjustabout · 03/01/2020 20:52

@Warpdrive, it's comforting to hear someone else having a similar experience.
Demons aren't fun / funny. Until a few years back, I never really considered their existence.
I can only thank Jesus, and will continue to.

flyingspaghettimonster · 03/01/2020 20:55

I'm an atheist. Although I would like to believe in a higher power, without proof I will never believe. So no, I don't think there is a first or second coming.

I do believe Jesus existed. But not as anything more than any other spiritual leader or cult leader. I think men wrote a combination of old legends and historical events into a fictitious work that they used to make a code of rules for people to follow. Some well meaning, others designed to control the masses. I think it has probably done more harm throughout history than good and I truly hope humans can move past the need for some sort of promised after life and start living in this life as though it really mattered, every moment.

roisinagusniamh · 03/01/2020 20:56

Google Stephen Fry's interview with Gay Byrne It's on Youtube.
'Does God exist ?' ..something like that.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 03/01/2020 20:58

Anubis will return. Our hearts will be weighed at death. I hope I have lived a good enough life that I will not be gobbled up by Ammut and can instead enter heaven.

There are thousands of equally believable gods. Why not Anubis instead of Jesus?
