To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

I have often thought about this and do very often as my friend is studying to be a vicar
We have often spoken about your common and garden people with mental health problems who say that they are Jesus and a genuine second coming. Apparently there are signs and events reported to lead up to this which are documented both in the Quran and Bible. Apparently people will not douubt that it is Jesus as they will know him in some way ( im not sure what it says about how). Its all a mystery to me.

thepeopleversuswork · 03/01/2020 19:03

No I don't. Not in a million years.

Jesus was a real person, there's plenty of historical evidence to back this up. He was a Jewish political leader who created a religious movement. But he wasn't a Messiah. There's no such thing as a Messiah.

Cornettoninja · 03/01/2020 19:05

@Starlink Grin

@GiveHerHellFromUs I feel the same way sometimes, I think there’s a lot of comfort And clarity to be found in faith that’s very hard to replicate in any other way.

I don’t think that humans are the pinnacle of intellect and self-awareness in the universe and love some of the more philosophical theories that science sometimes throws up examining the ways we came to be in existence at all. I think it’s fascinating how we’re slowly unpicking the universe to be unveiled into mathematic equations. I clearly don’t understand it but the fact that some people do inspires me in an almost spiritual way.

@Igotthisjustabout

That's interesting! What was the nasty experience (if you don't mind me asking)?

Gingernaut · 03/01/2020 19:06

Of course there won't.

There wasn't a first coming.

PositiveVibez · 03/01/2020 19:07

I believe Jesus existed and he was basically a cult leader.

I do not believe an omnipresent man who resides in heaven and impregnated a teenager with the son of Christ.

I do not believe he rose from the dead.

If you believe this, it means you don't believe dinosaurs existed.

Somanysocks · 03/01/2020 19:09

Yes I do believe it will happen but whether anyone believes or not we'll all find out eventually.

Igotthisjustabout · 03/01/2020 19:12

@wheresmymojo I don't mind sharing.

I basically met with a friend who is a medium. I knew never to ask her for a reading (have been bought up like this).
I came home after an in depth conversation with her, about contacting spirits, in a very funny mood. DH asked if I'd been drinking (I'd had a diet coke!) And I couldn't put my finger on how I felt.
The next day, all hell broke loose. When I described it to my vicar she very matter of factly told me it was poltergeist activity (she was very no nonsense about it)
That wasn't the worst that happened over the next few months. Even my husband could hear it/them in the evenings running about (he is a complete non believer)
It went on, I lost 2 stone. My DD saw and heard things too.
After prayer and a house blessing, my house (and my spirit) is at peace.
But the best thing is, I feel like I have no fear because I have God to defend me.

Nquartz · 03/01/2020 19:15

It was announced at a carol concert before Christmas in the sermon that the woman was excited for the second coming, I was very Confused

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 19:20

Thanks everyone for contributing your thoughts, I’m off to google lots more of this!

Can I just go off at a tangent here for a minute?
Those that do believe in a Second Coming, do you look forward to it? I believe in God/an intelligent design but I'm scared of believing in Jesus as that means I will have to believe in a second coming. Now I must admit, I last read Revelations decades ago but I still remember that there will be 'Gnashing of teeth,' 'Rivers of blood,' and something about crushing people (?) like a wine press. The tribulations also.
Why does the second coming make you happy when so many are supposed to suffer?

cosytoaster · 03/01/2020 19:24

That choice was going on for humanity long before Jesus came

If you believe this is the case @SBGA what exactly did Jesus die for? Genuine question, not meaning to be snarky

BonnyConnie · 03/01/2020 19:26

I’m pretty sure I remember that Jesus was made up but inspired by a real historical figure. Obviously Mohammed was just a liar. If there is a first coming (yet to occur clearly) then I’d be much more likely to believe in a second but as it stands it’s not happening.

@73kittycat73 it terrifies me in a way, because for the people alive on earth, it sounds horrific. That's why I suppose, it's a battle until the end of time.
But I always keep in mind, "and He will wipe every year away from their eyes. There will be no more death or pain or morning."
The book of Revelation is like a roller coaster ride but Jesus promises it will be ok for His believers.

SilverySurfer · 03/01/2020 19:29

There wasn't a first coming so there won't be a second. Jesus probably existed but is a normal human being like you or me.

beanaseireann · 03/01/2020 19:29

Mary the unmarried mother of God in Catholic teaching was/is venerated. Yet this same Catholic church treated unmarried mothers and their children in an often appalling way in the recent past.

bettybattenburg · 03/01/2020 19:29

If there were he'd probably end up in a secure unit as he wouldn't be believed,

John470322 · 03/01/2020 19:30

I have read quickly through this and am wondering if I should read it again slowly and carefully and rewrite parts of the sermon that I have prepared for Sunday. I will probably just mention some of the general thoughts on here to make what I say more interesting and up to date.
And yes I do believe that there was a First coming and that there will be a second coming but I have no idea when it will be.

Excited101 · 03/01/2020 19:31

What about all the times that it’s been announced that the rapture was coming and then it was conveniently glossed over when nothing happened...? It’s all a load of bollocks. The bible is am interesting story book, like Harry Potter just older. Would would it be anything ‘more’?

PooWillyBumBum · 03/01/2020 19:33

Ha no. I also don’t believe that all the stories in the bible are linked to one single historical figure. Think it’s a mish mash of stories of various people compounded by Chinese whispers.

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 03/01/2020 19:34

as a atheist no and there was never a first coming either
all a bunch of lies and bullshit

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 03/01/2020 19:35

I lean towards the idea that Jesus was a charismatic cult leader and for some reason it’s lasted all this time.

I like the idea of the old gods better. Why not?

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 03/01/2020 19:36

I’ve said for years that what if in 1000 years they find old stuff about Harry Potter, coupled with the ruins of HP world? That’s it, boom, new religion based on historical fact.

Cornettoninja · 03/01/2020 19:37

I can’t remember where I heard it now (it would have been a podcast) but they posed a really interesting question about the book of revelations. The basic jist is that Christianity subscribed to the belief that god has a plan for each of us and this is just how it is; based off that belief some of us are destined to have no faith and be damned to hell so fulfilling the plan god has for us.

I’m not sure how I’d reconcile that if I did have a Christian faith; would I just be relieved it wasn’t me?
