To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

Ooh, I binge watched this too and have an interest in politics, religion and the occult - I believe everything - and nothing if that makes any sense.

If there is a second coming I don't think the new "Messiah" would reveal themselves tbh, I mean, they'd be slaughtered in the virtual world and probably in real life too.

I tend to think that man created God in his own image rather than the theologically accepted vice versa. The world is largely secular - even most faiths and religions are governed by money to a large extent, and the pursuit of power - t'is all a big game of our own making, and the losers are those who wish to live quietly and harmoniously....

Given what's happened today regarding the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the timing of this series seems interesting, as it shows the many interwoven threads of religion and politics in the area, and how quickly things could fall apart if the status quo was rocked by a supposed "Messiah" or "Antichrist".

If you really want to pop down a rabbit hole, look into Operation Bluebeam, where the idea of using technology to convince the religious of such an event is proposed..... deep tin foil hat territory but fascinating from a psychological point of view. It also encompasses the "Alien Invasion" theme.

We do live in strange and interesting times, and art and life mirror each other in a myriad of ways.

I'm in the stalls with popcorn, and a fervent hope that religious idiocy doesn't cause any more suffering to people just trying to survive.

MsChnandlerBong · 03/01/2020 18:44

Haha no, there wasn't even a first one!

danadas · 03/01/2020 18:45

No. Even if there was a first time round (which I don't believe there was). There is no way, in this day and age that anyone declaring themselves a messiah of any sort would be accepted/believed/taken seriously.

MonnaLIza · 03/01/2020 18:46

I am here. Did you guys invoke me?

amusedbush · 03/01/2020 18:47

Nope. There’s not a shred of religious ‘teachings’ that I believe in.

I think the whole thing is bonkers, to be honest, but to each their own.

kittykatkitty · 03/01/2020 18:47

Don't want to cause any offence but I think Jesus was the David Blaine of his time.
A cracking illusionist

JigsawsAreInPieces · 03/01/2020 18:48

I believe that there was a prophet called Jesus but he was not the Messiah.

(trying to avoid putting ”he’s a very naughty boy” on the end of that sentence!)

I don't believe that there was a first coming so that means there isn't going to be a second coming. And with WW3 about to break out, any Messiah would probably be wiped out in an airstrike.

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 03/01/2020 18:49

Jesus is a person who has historical evidence to back up his exsitence. Many people have tried to disprove it but there is enough evidence to ascertain that there was a man called Jesus who went around healing people in that area of Jerusalem. Although some people of mumsnet want to disparage it the bible is also an amazing historical set of documents which give us details of a span of time from 5000BC to 80AD.

At the time he was not unique in his claims that he was the Messiah ( the one who saves) - what was unique was the first believer's boldness (often to their own to death) that he rose from the dead - and if he did - thus proving his claims, that he was the Messiah. It us also amazing how this idea has then spread. There are now thousands of thousands of people who claim that they believe (and have believed since that time) that Jesus was who he said he was and he has indeed 'saved them' from the brokeness of thier own hearts, and allowed them a relationship in communication with the God who created them, and allowing them to live from a place of freedom from their past and with hope for their futures.

SBGA · 03/01/2020 18:49

Op, reading this may answer some of your questions - it really complicated but one thing is very simple, and that is the bible says many will come claiming to be Jesus or try to say they're able to predict when he returns, but the bible is clear nobody knows the day or time.

https://www.gotquestions.org/when-Jesus-returns.html

It's almost irrelevant in one sense though, because if God is real, and He is, then what's the most important thing is not when his Son Jesus returns again, but more where you align yourself with Him in your personal ** life. God offers everyone the same free gift of eternal life with Him, and the very nature of a free gift is that you can't earn it or pay for it yourself or it ceases to be a gift. But as with any gift you can choose to accept it or reject it. That choice was going on for humanity long before Jesus came the first time and will continue right up until the day he returns, whether it be in our lifetime or not.

Igotthisjustabout · 03/01/2020 18:50

@GiveHerHellFromUs this is a good question and one I have thought about.
We (followers of jesus) are to pray for discernment as Jesus warned we could be deceived. There are sadly people who have claimed to be Jesus.

As an aside, I appreciate you asking a question in a civil way, and not mocking Smile

MissE6791 · 03/01/2020 18:50

Lol no. Absolutely astonished that 30% believe there will be Shock

ChestnutSmoothie · 03/01/2020 18:51

No historian or archaeologist has “proved the Bible to be true”. Quite the opposite Hmm

There’s no evidence whatsoever that Jesus existed as an historical figure. He might have done but with no evidence demonstrating it one way or the other then the only intellectually honest position must be complete neutrality.

And, frankly, anyone who says anything different doesn’t know what they are talking about.

SBGA · 03/01/2020 18:51

Like you get preachers in town centres. Would you believe someone who just stood there and said "i am the second coming". Do you think you'd just know when you saw them if they were genuine or not?
The bible says he will appear in the clouds and everyone will see all at the same time. So no street corner preachers!

MonnaLIza · 03/01/2020 18:52

Ok seriously I am about 3/4 Jewish, Grier secularly and with a super Jewish name but in spite of this or maybe because of this I LOVE the story of Jesus. If I had been around at the time I would have been a follower. Sadly I haven't got an ounce of the grace if god in me and I don't believe that any of it it's true but as far as stories go you can't go any better then Jesus in my opinion.

Needmorecaffine · 03/01/2020 18:52

I'm on episode 5 of the Messiah and starting to get bored.

Please tell me it ramps up again. 🙏

Serenschintte · 03/01/2020 18:52

Heres my perspective. I’m Catholic and practicing. Yes there will be a second coming/end of the World. Haven’t a clue when it will be and generally Catholics advised not to spend too much time thinking about it.
Jesus was a real person who existed and if you look for it there is a lot of proof/coincidences/advanced warning - what ever you want to call it in the Old Testament.
Have experienced something that could be described as a miracle from the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes in out family. Relative in Intensive care recovering when there was no sign of it and at a speed that the medics could not understand or explain.
Also interesting is the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima - this was an actual event in 1918. Described in newspapers and witnessed by 1000s of people. Can be found by googling.
I absolutely find all the recent sex abuse/financial scandals etc vile and those responsible should be harshly punished. Especially those who hurt children.

MonnaLIza · 03/01/2020 18:55
  • Grier = brought up. Autocorrect fail!! Neither my parents were religious.
Starlink · 03/01/2020 18:55

Depends how skillful the man is,,,

GiveHerHellFromUs · 03/01/2020 18:55

@Igotthisjustabout ah ok. That makes sense. I guess if there was another messiah they would have a way of presenting (whether it was only to believers or not) proof.

Don't thank me at all. I find it really interesting and I think it's sad that people try to mock others for their faith.
I went to a Church of England school and I love the idea of religion and I'm actually sometimes sad that I don't believe. I think religion brings some people a lot of peace and comfort.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 03/01/2020 18:56

@SBGA oh ok, so more a 'presence' than a mortal being?

speakball · 03/01/2020 18:59

If my memory serves me right the idea of a messiah dying but returning one day isn't unusual in religions and mythology. (I see religion as mythology but appreciate most Christians don't think of themselves as mythologists. Grin)

ChikiTIKI · 03/01/2020 18:59

Yes, I believe Jesus will come back to judge the living and the dead 🙏 and those repent and believe will live eternally in heaven.

Igotthisjustabout · 03/01/2020 19:02

@GiveHerHellFromUs I am always happy to answer genuine questions, it's nice to speak with open minded people.

I haven't always believed. In my 20s, I openly said I didn't believe in God at all. Then went back to Him after a nasty supernatural experience that I never thought would happen in real life.
It's all very interesting though. I am married to a non believer who doesn't think Jesus even existed as a person.
Everyone believes what they believe Smile

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 03/01/2020 19:02

I think the nativity is a lovely story and I really wish it could be proved to be true. I suppose that is why 'faith' is so important for this for people. I just cannot believe that some divine being would choose this insignificant planet to bestow his thoughts/wishes/rules on - just why out of millions of others? I think anyone with a scientific mind just needs proof - and there's no way we are going to get it.

Chocolatedaim · 03/01/2020 19:02

Really enjoyed reading this thread.

I have always been firmly on the side of no Jesus didn’t exist and God didn’t exist.

However I then lost both my parents in my early 20s and since then I feel as if I really want to believe. I’m not sure why, maybe it’s so I fee closer to my parents, maybe it’s for hope, or for something positive in my life, who knows, but it’s definitely sparked an interest that wasn’t there before.
