To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

Most history past the last 1200 or so years ago is educated guesswork at best.

katseyes7 · 03/01/2020 19:38

Mary the unmarried mother of God in Catholic teaching was/is venerated. Yet this same Catholic church treated unmarried mothers and their children in an often appalling way in the recent past.

^This.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts @Igotthisjustabout, I do appreciate it. :)

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 19:41

@73kittycat73 I’ve never read the book of revelations but from your post and this series, don’t you think at the moment we (as a whole world) are living in a sea of blood?

There’s a scene in Messiah where they talk about man coming along and drawing a line on a map and deciding countries / borders.

We live in paradise, Mother Earth is amazing and beautiful yet we as a human race seem intent of destroying her and fighting one another.
Again there’s enough money, food, land for everyone in the world it’s just shared so unequally.

I know this sounds a bit Utopian but with all of the horrific global news, it does make me wonder if we are mid throws of chaos - maybe that’s why this intrigues me, it gives me hope in the human race! Grin

I think anyone who turned up now telling people they were Jesus Christ would be sectioned.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 03/01/2020 19:43

There’s every chance the aliens left the bible as a ‘how to’ guide/warning and we’ve misinterpreted it along the way...

goodwinter · 03/01/2020 19:45

@OldQueen1969 Fascinating post! Any reading recommendations on related subjects? (Not necessarily religion, but the psychological/political/sociological intersection of it all)

pigsDOfly · 03/01/2020 19:46

I don't believe there was a first coming so don't believe there will be a second.

People believe what they want to believe, that's the nature of 'faith'.

There's no proof that anything in the Bible is real and until there is proof I will just continue to believe that the stories in the Bible, both old and new testament, are just like any other book, full of make believe and made up adventures.

goodwinter · 03/01/2020 19:48

Presumably any messiah coming along in the future would need to perform some serious miracles in order for anyone to believe them... Like, way beyond the traditional "water into wine" type thing that could be explained by trickery.

Bluebutterfly90 · 03/01/2020 19:50

No, I don't believe there will be a second coming. I don't believe there was a first.

Jesus was probably a real person but there's no evidence that he was anything but a person.
There were tons of people historically who claimed to have various gods as parents, why is the Christian one different?

Still, I would love to see a second coming. Some kid busting out miracles left and right? That would be something.

bakewreck99 · 03/01/2020 19:51

Whatever you believe about the eternal, there are plenty of charity workers both in secular and religious backed charities that are far more inspiring than Netflix dramas to read about.

Somanysocks · 03/01/2020 19:52

Christians believe that when Jesus does come back there will be no doubt, it won't be like the first time when he was born as a man and crucified, but as part of the Trinity, therefore God.

People won't be able to section him.

withgraceinmyheart · 03/01/2020 19:53

I used to. But then I experienced mental illness and saw first hand how powerful and indisputable it feels.

I think Jesus and his mother probably genuinely believed he was the messiah, as a way of coping with her unplanned pregnancy. He deliberately recruited the most uneducated and low social status people he could find, because they were least likely to challenge him or notice contradictions. It’s a tactic his followers have been using ever since.

I feel lucky now to be out of it, to be free from the guilt and fear. It was the best gift mental illness gave me.

Equanimitas · 03/01/2020 19:54

I don't think there will be, but in a way it would be quite funny if there was. The new Messiah would be vilified as a wet lefty and papers like the Mail would do their utmost to dig up smears - I can just see them making out that he was a total nutter for claiming virgin birth. The establishment wouldn't be able to cope with all these dreadful notions of giving to the poor, being tolerant, helping the sick etc.

73kittycat73 · 03/01/2020 19:54

@LuluBellaBlue I do wonder if the Bible is Allegory (Is that the right word?), that instead of supernatural forces smiting us, we are doing it ourselves, eg climate change.
What we must try and remember is that people do random (And not so random!) acts of kindness everyday, it's just they're not usually reported. There is good, and good people out there too.

Cocobean30 · 03/01/2020 19:55

I do, partly because if you watch the world around you closely and what the powers that be are trying to push on us, they are trying their very best to go against the bible and Christian teachings. If you really go down the rabbit hole you’ll recognise that they are serving the opposing side. I won’t go on about it but look at how genders are being broken down and children being sexualised. They are trying to break down the natural creation and create a baphomet ideal. Deep I know but if you’re interested you will research it yourself Smile

MaryPopppins · 03/01/2020 19:57

No.

Due to the fact there wasn't a first. And there wasn't a "good man called Jesus" who had stories passed down about him.

It's all fiction. Stolen from various other sources that predated Christianity.

73kittycat73 · 03/01/2020 20:00

to be free from the guilt and fear.

@withgraceinmyheart, that's how religion feels to me too. I've always been terrified that I will go to hell Sad. I always feel weird in churches too, like God is even more intently listening to my thoughts and I'm thinking, 'Must think pure thoughts, must think pure thoughts!'

CardinalSin · 03/01/2020 20:01

There is literally no evidence that Jesus ever existed. (OK, there is evidence that people existed who were called "Jesus", but that's separate).

So, no, I don't think there is going to be a second coming.

The Great Prophet Zarquon, on the other hand...

LuluBellaBlue · 03/01/2020 20:02

@73kittycat73 yes I totally agree, there is so much love and amazing stuff going on in the world ❤️

@cocobean30 oh know, you’ve opened up another rabbit hole for me that I was discussing with friends over Xmas, about hello actually controls the worlds media, pop culture, etc. Brittany Spears came up, as in rich old men wanted to make perving at young school girls acceptable..... Envy
I guess there’s some dark forces out there to content with!

Hotcuppatea · 03/01/2020 20:04

No I don't. No first coming. No second coming. Jesus probably was a real person who lived around that time. Does that mean he did magic things and rose from the dead, etc. Well, no.

This formula makes a lot of sense to me

Religion = cult+ time

Lougle · 03/01/2020 20:06

I think you'll naturally get a subset of the MN population on this thread, either vehemently opposed to the concept of Jesus as Messiah and the second coming or ardently supporting it. I don't think you'll see too many people who are ambivalent about it.

I do believe that Jesus came and was (and is) the Messiah. I also believe there will be a second coming. The Bible is very clear that none know the day or the hour (Matthew 24) so anyone who tells you that they've received a prophecy about it is very likely wrong.

Ultimately, we each have to make a decision about how we live our lives. I believe that God is gracious and many people change their minds as they come to the end of life (just as many do not).

MaidenMotherCrone · 03/01/2020 20:06

What if he respawns but identifies as something other than himself. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rottnest · 03/01/2020 20:11

I don't believe in the first coming either. Anyone claiming to be the new Messiah would be admitted to a psych ward.
Interesting comment re the catholic church's treatment of unmarried mothers, but this also happened in other church's and cultures too.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 03/01/2020 20:14

No, we've made up myths every since we evolved, why believe this one over all the others?
