To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

I think loads of the Bible is metaphorical. Others believe it is the direct word of God.
I take the Catholic view that it was inspired by God but written by men, who were writing within the cultural context and the limits scientific knowledge of their time

Which means a) that God is a really bad communicator & b) nothing written in the Bible can be taken as literally true and so the book is therefore redundant as a source of information.

Purely statistically, if you take all the religions it is possible to believe in and calculate how many of them allow you entry to an afterlife if you pick the wrong one. Then the best odds of a successful eternal life would be as an atheist because it is the only way you cant be accused of worshipping the wrong deity.

FabbyChix · 07/01/2020 17:15

I don’t believe there was a first

Madhairday · 07/01/2020 17:29

Thank you @FramingDevice, that's kind of you. Sorry I've gone quiet on the thread - bit floored by a lung infection right now. It is giving me time to watch Messiah!

SirChing · 07/01/2020 17:34

@Walkingdeadfangirl

OR
a) Man is really bad at understanding and recording what God says and
b) the New Testament is more recent and so, for me, is more likely to be true as there have been fewer generations to muck it up in translation. The fact that the four gospels are pretty similar also suggests to me that the NT has more validity.

As for all the rest: if people don't believe that God exists, I wouldn't worry about which one of the religions is correct, because if he isn't real then he isn't coming back anyway!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 07/01/2020 18:56

Man is really bad at understanding and recording what God says
Which is what makes God such a bad communicator. If he actually wanted us to understand his 'message' he should have spoken to us on our level.

the New Testament is more recent and so, for me, is more likely to be true Does is really make much difference between approx 2000 and 2500 years when considering the truth of a text?

The fact that the four gospels are pretty similar also suggests to me that the NT has more validity Or is suggests they are just copied.

SirChing · 07/01/2020 19:01

@Walkingdeadfangirl Yeah, you can look at it all that way if you want to, obviously. You do, I don't. C'est la vie.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 07/01/2020 19:11

@SirChing
I am trying to look at it from all ways to try and work out what if any is most likely and how confident I can be in any conclusion.
To date I have been unable to find any way to look at it that I can have enough confidence to believe (or know) it to be true.

It is what it is.

SirChing · 07/01/2020 19:12

You know, people can dismiss everything to do with God and Jesus, and think it's all crap. I used to which is why I don't care that others do.

What logic can never explain away, are those of us who have had very personal religious experiences when we have felt the presence of God. It has happened to me at a time when I was totally mentally and physically well, but was questioning something. God was there with me.

But I would never ever go into details of what happened on a thread like this, as it was something so personal and meaningful to me, and I don't trust that people wouldn't take the piss, going on previous comments made.

Others with faith have also said that they have had religious experiences too. Again, they didn't go into details.

But maybe that's why some of us just aren't bothered that every question we have cant be answered. Because we know that what has happened to us confirmed to us that God and Jesus are real, and surpassed our understanding.

As you aren't approaching things from that stance, it doesn't surprise me that you don't believe. God knows who will believe in him and who is a lost cause anyway. You can't believe unless you are open minded and open hearted to the possibility of there being more. Given the number of closed minds on this thread, I suspect there are a fair few who will be lost causes. But that's fine, because they don't believe anyway so won't care.

And that's why I don't care if atheists believe me or not.

Wagsandclaws · 07/01/2020 19:25

I've loved your posts so far @SirChing

I'm quite a new Christian and could never have fought my corner as well as you have on this thread. So many questions but you have answered most wonderfully.

The belligerence and bullying that has preceded this post on this thread would never be tolerated against any other religion.

It does say in that in the end Christians will be mocked and persecuted, I will never deny Jesus.

@SirChing hope you get well soon Thanks

Wagsandclaws · 07/01/2020 19:25

Oooops bold fail Blush

Mockers2020Vision · 07/01/2020 19:31

It's not crap.

It's fiction.

People used to understand this.

Read Karen Armstrong.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 07/01/2020 19:43

@SirChing I get you believe because of a personal revelation (perfectly reasonable), but that is of no use as evidence to anyone else.

All atheists I know are very open minded and open hearted but have not been granted a personal revelation. The only conclusion I can reach from that is that (if he exists) God wants you to believe but does not want me to believe.

Until such times, there is no practical difference between God does not exist and God does not want me to know he exists.

Whiskersandbeyond · 07/01/2020 19:53

Any Christians on this thread can I recommend man called Sam shamoun to you? He is extremely knowledgeable in his Christian faith. You can find him on youtube
Someone else on this thread posted a video of his earlier on this thread.
As I said he is Christian and Very knowledgeable I have watched countless videos of his. If you want to know more whether Christian or not please have a look.

HeresMe · 07/01/2020 20:10

I love how people say we seem angry ect when we challenge beliefs.

The Christian church has held power in this country for a long time and unbelievers were scared to speak out for a long while.

As said of God can do anything on this earth there is zero point in believing in him, if it's all about the next life what is the point of this life and caring about anyone. God at best is a physcopath and narcissist as he was murderous in old testament but these days can't be arsed to lift a finger.

It's a carrot and stick arguement at best.

And I say same about all the religions.

I prefer the Greek ones best at least they didn't pretend they weren't shits.

AutumnCrow · 07/01/2020 20:12

This thread has 666 posts

SirChing · 07/01/2020 21:02

@Wagsandclaws Thank you, that's lovely of you Flowers I feel exactly the same about other religions. People may ask questions but if they disagreed, I doubt they would tell a Muslim or Jewish person that they were "underthinking" or say "to be clear, I am mocking you". It would be totally unacceptable.

And yes to Christians being treated like this being prophesied. I have kept that in mind throughout. Ironically, I was floundering a little bit with my faith until this thread. I didn't realise it was so strong. So I am really pleased with having the chance to defend it.

I have also received several PMs from different mumsnetters asking me how to find out more, so I am really pleased.

@Mockers2020Vision No thanks

@Walkingdeadfangirl Yeah, you're probably right. C'est la vie.

@HeresMe Whatever.

@AutumnCrow I hope this is 668 - the neighbour of the beast Grin

ZenNudist · 07/01/2020 22:01

@cabbageking thanks for this:

I don't think it matters if someone thinks it is rubbish or is unsure because as long as you have those moments of peace, comfort, and love, they sustains you.

Something to cling on to amidst the general urrrrrgh of this thread. It started off very interesting and props to @SirChing for continuing to engage albeit with baptist theology that doesn't square with my own.

Im very open minded about belief systems but personally I look to Jesus and it seems that God likes that. I assume there are e.g. Muslims out there who have found God likes their way of worship too.

I disagree with the upthread comment that God doesnt intercede. He has answered specific prayers for me. Left me going "what the, what?!" Shock

@boymum9 I found your story fascinating and disagree with the typical idiotic response that you indoctrinated yourself. I ended up on my faith journey by accident and I have stopped railing against it (I was a happy agnostic now I am a questioning Christian) and trying to enjoy the ride. Resolution for 2020: be a better person!

MamaWeasel · 07/01/2020 22:16

Slipperwig! Grin

Somanysocks · 07/01/2020 22:28

@HeresMe ect it is etc (et cetera). Smile

Somanysocks · 07/01/2020 22:38

The belligerence and bullying that has preceded this post on this thread would never be tolerated against any other religion.

You are right in saying this, however all Christians I know, including myself, are secure in what we believe for reasons that are too many to go into here. It's water off a duck's back.

ByeMF · 07/01/2020 22:42

No, but I do believe in science.

cabbageking · 07/01/2020 22:45

Sometimes it is good to meditate on why you believe something and double check yourself. So negative comments do make you stronger. You are responsible for your own behaviour and how you treat others.
I am not responsible for the responses.

HeresMe · 07/01/2020 22:56

There is no belligerence or bullying just people who dont agree with you

But that's religions game if you don't agree you are being harassed.

VeeJayBee · 07/01/2020 23:08

Yes! I do believe what the bible says. There is a lot of factual evidence that Jesus lived and died and rose again. You can see some of this evidence today at the British library. There is more evidence for it than a lot of other universally accepted theories that we believe in without thinking today. Our whole calendar
