To ask if you think there will be a second coming?

This is inspired by the new Netflix show Messiah, about a second coming.

I really hope this doesn’t upset or offend anyone and people can share their beliefs and thoughts openly and without prejudice or judgement as I know this can be very sensitive for some people.

Following on from —binge— watching this series I did a bit of googling and it seems both Christian and Muslim regions predict this. (Not researched if any others do yet)

I’m not very well informed about different regions but the concept of this programme has really interested me, I find it fascinating that this could, maybe? actually happen!

Do you think there could be a second coming?!

(And what would it actually mean for the world? A rise in consciousness? Mass healing???)

YABU - no don't be so daft!
YANBU - yes, this could happen, why not?!

Well, if you believe what’s written in revelations then there will be 1000 years of calm before the second coming so I think based on the current climate of war and violence and conflict which exists on earth you’ve got a while to wait.

I 100% don’t believe there is a God but I can see why some might take comfort from the idea that there is better out there in circumstances of difficulty.

What I absolutely cannot understand is how anyone can take the bible literally. So God made the earth in seven days, given there is scientific factual evidence of evolution we know this to 100% not be possible.

And Noah’s arc? Do people actually, genuinely believe that there was an arc with two of each animal on it and that only Noah and his wife and three sons were chosen to remain on earth? Again this is categorically not possible, that kind of thinking is up there with the conspiracy theories which surround e.g. vaccinations etc. I absolutely respect anyone’s right to believe. But. I simply cannot respect anyone who believes so literally in things which are categorically impossible.

For me one of the issues I have with the idea of the end times and the second coming is that so many more evangelical Christians live their lives because “the end times are near.” They’re not living good moral lives because they’re just good moral people (they might be obviously but that’s not the reason) they do things because “god is coming and we must prepare for the end times.

They spend so much time living for the after life that they’re not living an actual life. That can never be viewed as a healthy way to exist.

Ijustwanttoretire · 07/01/2020 14:30

@Jesusinthecabbagevan - exactly! If there was, no one would believe them, they would just be 'some nutter who thinks he's the second Jesus'. No one (OK, very few) people would notice or care. What would he have to do to prove it anyway? Water into wine? I'm pretty sure the magician Dynamo could do that. World peace - THEN I might believe...

speakball · 07/01/2020 14:30

Can you think of an example?

Revelation talks about people being nasty to each other and lots of natural disasters. I can't imagine how someone writing that during the Bronze age could possibly come up with such scenarios. Experts are baffled why people have only just started being nasty and the first ever Tsunami was a month ago.

NaviSprite · 07/01/2020 14:41

I’m an atheist as previously mentioned and I’m not an angry person, I also have no desire to try and debunk anybody’s faith.

For me the signifiers of End Times are just a reflection of mankind at its worst. Greed, false idols, violence, apathy - I don’t think these are new to humanity so when I read that we are possibly living in said end times I just think, well, that’s people. Where there is bad there is good and vice versa - but we have a constant stream of bad projected via rolling news coverage and more awareness of the world we live in.

The issue I take with the concept of the Christian God and the Bible is that it’s all so far fetched and sometimes contradictory to itself. I read the Bible a few years back (it took a long while to get through all the prose of the King James version) and whilst I appreciated the creativity of the stories therein I didn’t feel affected by it in any other sense.

On a personal level I knew I’d never be able to follow a religion after I lost my third baby last year to stillbirth, during that horrific time the hospital Pastoral Care was amazing and so genuinely caring that I envied their faith, I would love to believe that my baby boy is in heaven somewhere and that I could see him again some day, but even after that traumatic event, I still don’t and can’t believe. But I thank the Pastor who held a private naming for him because it validated his existence in a way that we needed at the time, so whilst I am not a religious person by any stretch and will say I’m an atheist quite matter of factly, I will also acknowledge that those of faith have helped me through dark times and I appreciate them and thank them for it, but it won’t change that I don’t agree with the basis of their beliefs.

@AlternativePerspective Brilliant post!

I too think that stuff like genesis is allegory. Apparently there is some kind of evidence that there was a huge flood in the middle east around the time of Noah, something to do with a sea being formed I think (was on a Discovery Channel type documentary donkeys years ago). So it could have seemed to the people living there at that time that the whole world was flooded. And maybe someone did live on a boat and save some animals. But it's clearly not true that it was two of every different type of animal as not all the animals of the world lived in that region at the time.

The Catholic Church takes the stance that if science proves that something in the Bible is wrong, then unless it's a miracle, it's the Bible that's wrong. As it was written by men in a time of very limited scientific understanding.

I find it amazing to think that the parting of the Red Sea could well have been the water pulling back for a Tsunami. And I once watched a documentary about how there were scientific reasons which could explain why the seven plagues of Egypt happened in the order that they did.

I think lots of this stuff has a kernel of truth but the explanations for it were limited at the time and then distorted through the Chinese whispers effect.

roisinagusniamh · 07/01/2020 14:43

SirChing I think you are allowing this thread to affect your life way too much. You've been posting massisively long threads non stop since it began. I think it may be affecting your sleep pattern too and your use oflanguage is crude, sometimes.
I think you are trying to convince yourself on here, not us!

SirChing · 07/01/2020 14:48

@AlternativePerspective Oh, and I agree about the living for the after life too. The Bible says that Jesus said that it is worse to be a Christian who knows the behaviour expected of them and c ant be bothered doing it, than it is to be a non-Christian.

I find lots of the Christians I know (my exinlaws specifically) use their believe in being saved regardless, as an excuse to do sod all of any practical use to help people in the way Jesus wants them too, now. They are so happy at knowing they are going to Heaven that it's all they care about. It's one of the reasons my ex turned away from Christianity and never went back to it. He found them hypocritical.

SirChing · 07/01/2020 14:51

@roisinagusniamh Aw bless you for your concern. Don't worry, I am fine. Currently in bed ill so have loads of time.

Yes, I can be potty mouthed. That's fine by MNHQ though, so maybe if you don't like it then take it up with them.

My local Vicar swears like an absolute trooper so I'm not too concerned that God gives a shit to be honest Grin

SirChing · 07/01/2020 14:54

@NaviSprite I am so so sorry that your baby was stillborn. There are just no words that are adequate Flowers

roisinagusniamh · 07/01/2020 14:57

Ah well, keep it up then.
God doesn't give a shit indeed, because s/he doesn't exist except in your mind.

SirChing · 07/01/2020 14:59

God doesn't give a shit indeed, because s/he doesn't exist except in your mind

Ah well, if it's all in my head, don't let it bother you then Smile

roisinagusniamh · 07/01/2020 15:02

It's amusing rather than bothersome.
How many more long, boring posts are you going to write to try and convince someone....anyone.......please listen.

cabbageking · 07/01/2020 15:25

The length of day is not specified.
The seventh day has not ended yet in Genesis.
We know the earth etc took millions of years and the first thing it says is in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth. It ends with the first day but millions have years have already passed to create the heavens and earth.

Days in the bible have different meanings depending on the Hebrew word used. When God says to Adam do not eat the fruit "for in the day you eat from it you will certainly die." He does not die that human day but apparently lived for 930 years. Still in Gods 7th day on which God is resting.

The bible does not say this seventh day has ended yet.

So 7 days does not mean our normal week.

speakball · 07/01/2020 15:31

The bible does not say this seventh day has ended yet.

The bible also says I can cure black mold by cutting a pigeon in half and smearing the blood on my front door.

Flatbellyfella · 07/01/2020 15:39

Watch YouTube " Robert O Dean", an ex military man, then make up your own opinion on the question.

SirChing · 07/01/2020 15:53

@roisinagusniamh I have repeatedly said I don't care if people listen or choose not to believe. It's no skin off my nose. If you remain fixed in thinking I do have an agenda, then that's up to you. Thanks for saying I am amusing, I shall take it as a compliment Smile

SirChing · 07/01/2020 15:55

The bible also says I can cure black mold by cutting a pigeon in half and smearing the blood on my front door

Does that work throughout the whole house or only on the door......could be handy to know! Cilit Pigeon does have a certain je ne sais quoi to it Grin

SirChing · 07/01/2020 15:57

@roisinagusniamh if you think my posts are boring, you have obviously read them. You could always just.....not? I dont give a shite either way.

roisinagusniamh · 07/01/2020 16:14

I have read a few and skimmed through some and scrolled down through the rest.
You would not post constantly if you we’re not trying to convince us or/and yourself.

LastTrainEast · 07/01/2020 16:17

@cabbageking So when god said "for in the day you eat from it you will certainly die." he meant "you will surely die of old age in 930 years""

Doesn't sound like much of a threat really.

And if "day" meant any length that god wanted why would he use the word to Adam at all since Adam wouldn't know what that meant.

Do you say to people "I'll meet you on thursday for lunch" or do you make up a new word they can't know and say "I'll meet you on Slipperwig for lunch"

SirChing · 07/01/2020 16:20

You would not post constantly if you we’re not trying to convince us or/and yourself

Sooooooo glad you know me better than I know myself. Fab! Maybe you can decide what I want for tea then Smile

SirChing · 07/01/2020 16:22

Slipperwig That should most definitely be a thing. What a great word!

SirChing · 07/01/2020 16:23

@LastTrainEast I too know what you mean re all the day malarkey. I see it as metaphorical, personally, but know that others are quite literal in it.

roisinagusniamh · 07/01/2020 16:44

SurChing pray for the answer to your question 😜
