Have you ever had negative comments for dressing well going to work?

Shedidnt · 02/01/2020 13:28

I suppose they were not negative in my case but I don't have much confidence really, so I think women (in both cases) wouldn't know that.

I dress well going to work. Pencil skirts or dresses. On two occasions how I dress has been commented on (and not complimentary).

First one was a girl who said 'you look like you're dressed up to go out - I wouldn't get dressed up to come into this place'. I felt like an eejit for trying too hard.

Second one were two female colleagues talking among themselves and one saying 'oh well, she's always overdressed'.

I like to dress well as it gives me confidence. But I feel women particularly hated me for it. The women I befriended never commented apart from maybe to say, that's a nice top - where did you get it (usually primark), but it has left me feeling self conscious about what I wear in case I look like a try-hard or something?

Please tell me some of you dress up to go to work?

Another factor might be an ex (who used to beat me up) told me I was dressing up for the men at work and in fact some of the beatings I took were to make my face bruised so that I couldn't go to work.

I remove heels in the house because it’s not practical. I also remove my coat for the same reason.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:11

Yes, and others have had similar experiences to me.

Thanks for your input @antlady, but you're not the only person here and your experience isn't the definitive answer.

well not if you're going to the local curry house

eh? You do not need to wear a full face of make up & heels to look appropriate in any posh London restaurant.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:12

Well I remove my work clothes for comfort @Fochit

I never said it was.

I'm just confused as to why your so convinced your colleagues are insulting you. Actually I'm not 😴

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:15
  1. A lot of 'posh' restaurants have a dress code
  2. You'd feel out of place in pyjamas
  3. I like any excuse to dress up
  4. I'm not sure what you consider posh
  5. I don't need to wear makeup and heels. I want to.
OP posts:
Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:16

Because they are insulting me.

An older woman referring to the way I dress as ‘always dressing to show off my figure’ (and not said in a good way), several women passing bitchy comments about why I go to so much effort, I must spend a fortune on clothes, who am I trying to impress? etc.

YY to all of the above Kangaroo!

1.Which posh restaurants require a full face of make up & heels as a dress code.

  1. There are some options between pjs & the above.
  2. Dressing up & looking glamorous doesn't have to involve no 1.
  3. I don't think posh has to involve no 1 & in fact I think a full face of make up is not posh.
  4. No one said otherwise
Scabetty · 03/01/2020 05:24

Just continue doing what you are doing. If you get comments that appear negative just say ‘this old thing? It was lying at the bottom of my wardrobe’ or ‘you want to see me when I really make an effort’ Wink A colleague of mine gets a bit huffy if I wear 2 inch heels because I look ‘too slim’. I am not that slim Confused

antlady · 03/01/2020 05:25

I would totally wear these pjs!

Have you ever had negative comments for dressing well going to work?
Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:26

Well you obviously think you look glamorous with no make up or heels. That's your opinion.

OP posts:
Fochit · 03/01/2020 05:26

My ‘on the pull’ comment is not exclusively based on the wearing of heels or even just the dressing up. It’s based on a number of factors and many years of experience.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:28

Well any workplace I've worked hasn't been a pulling joint @Fochit.

OP posts:
Fochit · 03/01/2020 05:28

Ah. So looking ‘glamorous’ is your aim.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:29

If I'm out, yes.
At work? Looking professional.

antlady · 03/01/2020 05:34

Well you obviously think you look glamorous with no make up or heels. That's your opinion.

Again there is width of options between no make up & full face.

Like I said I'm 5ft 9 so can wear flats & I used to do modelling so know exactly what works on me.

I'm pretty sure my opinion of glamorous is more on the mark then yours & you don't seem so concerned by actual fashion. But hey ho op you can't have good taste without bad taste!

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:37

@antlady I'm not sure why you're picking on me but it's very unbecoming.

OP posts:
Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:38

PS I also did some modelling in a former life.

OP posts:
Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:42

And btw how me commenting on dressing well has morphed into me plastering my face with a 'full face of makeup', I do not know.
Nowhere have I stated that I layer on the makeup. Nowhere have I even mentioned whether I wear makeup to work!

OP posts:
antlady · 03/01/2020 05:43

Replying to your posts & disagreeing with you is not picking on you.

Which agency as you implied you were not tall?

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:45

I'm not tall. I mostly did magazine and catalogue shots, not cat-walk. I was with a few agencies over the years, but none in this country and it was in the early 90s and I can't actually remember the names, as my mother looked after that end of things.

OP posts:
Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 05:47

Yes, you are picking on me. You're picking up on irrelevant points I make every point I make and going off on a tangent from the discussion in hand. Keep to the topic please.

OP posts:
antlady · 03/01/2020 05:47

** Thought so.

Nowhere have I stated that I layer on the makeup. Nowhere have I even mentioned whether I wear makeup to work!

Nowhere have I said that I don't wear any make up or only eat out at local
curry houses. Yet you also made assumptions.

Tbh wear what you want. I think your colleagues will have an issue with you no matter what style you chose.

antlady · 03/01/2020 05:49

I hope 2020 brings you some self awareness 😜
