To buy coffee everyday and drink it in peace!

I’m one of those people who buy coffee from a coffee shop every morning as I enter the office! I’m aware that a lot of people probably view this as a waste of money but I love coffee, I look forward to it everyday and I can afford it

One of my colleagues comments almost everyday about how much it costs, I could go on a holiday with that money blah blah blah! I have made it very clear that I’m aware that’s the case but I still want to buy a coffee! He will irresolute lecture me for 5mins on how much money I’m wasting! It’s so grating when I just want to drink it in peace

FWIW I never discuss money with him or complain about being broke/going on holiday! I now mostly ignore him but AIBU in finding this so so annoying

My default when anyone is making comments like that about finances to me is to tilt my head, give a concerned look and say-
“You’ve been commenting a lot about my spending. Is everything ok with you financially? You seem very hung-up on how others are spending their money”.

CycleWoman · 01/01/2020 20:25

I do the same the days I work. It’s a luxury to drink and entire coffee while it’s hot.

Some people just can’t mind their own business! I have a colleague who comments on what I have for a snack, when I eat lunch, etc etc. Drives me bonkers

lovemenorca · 01/01/2020 20:25

Do what you want
But please buy a reusable cup! Saves the waste and might make them think you have made homemade and you’ll probably get that coffee a bit cheaper anyway as usually give 25p off etc if you use own cup

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/01/2020 20:25

Totally up to you what you spend your money on. I think it's a bit frivolous, but I'm not keen on coffee bit more so, its nothing at all to do with me, I bet you'd think some of the stuff I spend my money on it dumb!

coffeeplease16 · 01/01/2020 20:29

I have a reusable cup! That’s what I think everyone spends there money on different things! And I personally LOVE coffee

@PaperbackBlighter that’s a good idea! Think I’ll try it.

It’s awkward as he’s much more senior than me and I don’t want to be too rude!

'When you're buying it, you get to comment. Since you're not do jog on'.

Cherry321 · 01/01/2020 20:32

Ignore him and enjoy it. I don’t have many vices these days; but love my coffee. Wouldn’t give it up for anything.

iklboo · 01/01/2020 20:35

Ah, just saw he's a senior colleague. Best not tell him to jog on Grin

iklboo · 01/01/2020 20:36

Tell him everyone got you gift cards for the coffee shop for Christmas.

GoGoLego · 01/01/2020 20:36

If it's in a reusable cup it's rather presumptuous of him to assume that you've brought the coffee as opposed to have made a coffee at him. My travel cup keeps my coffee warm for ages YADNBU

managedmis · 01/01/2020 20:36

I'm the same as you. £2 on a Starbucks? Yes please. Bit of time for moi

TheLittleBrownFox · 01/01/2020 20:39

Tell a white lie and say you've started making them at home for your new years resolution? Might get him off your back.

NewPapaGuinea · 01/01/2020 20:39

Depends where you buy it from.

foofooyeah · 01/01/2020 20:40

I do this. Sometimes a friend and me meet early for a coffee before work. It’s a real treat. Otherwise I get one at work. Love it, it’s a treat. If anyone questioned me I would be v blunt and say none of their business

coffeeplease16 · 01/01/2020 20:40

Stupidly bought a cup that’s branded with the name of the coffee shop!

I would love to tell him to jog on haha

TheLittleBrownFox · 01/01/2020 20:43

So? That doesn't mean you can't tell him you made the coffee at home!

Chottie · 01/01/2020 20:43

I love coffee too and love coffee shop coffee :)
It's one of life's pleasures.

Regarding your colleague, just smile and nod and enjoy your coffee. Do not react to his comments in any way.

BigFatLiar · 01/01/2020 20:44

Just because the names on the cup doesn't mean you got the coffee there.

KoopaShell · 01/01/2020 20:56

Everyone has an opinion on how people spend their money for some reason. If it's not something you would enjoy it's obviously a waste of money to you. Why do people not understand that?

I could easily list things here and say I spend money on them and people will think oh wow what a waste eg; hair dyed and cut in a salon, sandwich for lunch from a cafe not from home, expensive cheese, designer shoes, having the heating on high rather than wear layers, diamonds, sky tv etc.

Until someone asks you to contribute, you should just mind your own business!

belay · 01/01/2020 20:59

I do the same. But I don't drink, smoke or go out. Funny how some people spend money on alcohol but comment on those who have coffees

BaolFan · 01/01/2020 21:00

Senior or not you can still address it - it's all in the delivery.

"Are you worried that you're paying me too much because I choose to buy coffee?" accompanied by a big smile.

"Morning . Let me guess, it's time for my morning lecture about buying coffee! I'm sure you've something better to worry about!" With big grin.

On both occasions I'd keep on moving. If he accosts you at your desk then find a reason to get up and move - to the printer/another department/the loo.

Rinse and repeat. Every time he says something to you, say the same thing back to him.

Devonishome1 · 01/01/2020 21:09

Tell him that you buy another one on your way home!

SinkGirl · 01/01/2020 21:15

Tell him youve bought a really expensive bean to cup coffee machine and are bringing that coffee in every day

(Oh and actually do it - you can drink better coffee, all the time. I’m addicted to mine - it broke once and took three weeks to get it fixed and I felt like I was dying 😂)

Hollycatberry · 01/01/2020 21:15

I do the same. But I don't drink, smoke or go out. Funny how some people spend money on alcohol but comment on those who have coffees

Same for me. My daily before work coffee (in reusable cup) is part of my routine. I commute early to avoid peak time and enjoy an extra walk to get my coffee before I go into work.
I’ve had people comment saying I could just make one at work to save money but the coffee is not as nice and I enjoy the little extra time I get to myself before work.
