To buy coffee everyday and drink it in peace!

I’m one of those people who buy coffee from a coffee shop every morning as I enter the office! I’m aware that a lot of people probably view this as a waste of money but I love coffee, I look forward to it everyday and I can afford it

One of my colleagues comments almost everyday about how much it costs, I could go on a holiday with that money blah blah blah! I have made it very clear that I’m aware that’s the case but I still want to buy a coffee! He will irresolute lecture me for 5mins on how much money I’m wasting! It’s so grating when I just want to drink it in peace

FWIW I never discuss money with him or complain about being broke/going on holiday! I now mostly ignore him but AIBU in finding this so so annoying

Tell him talking about money is vulgar then ignore him and concentrate on the aroma emanating from your coffee cup as you sip the coffee.

iklboo · 01/01/2020 21:21

If I don't get my morning coffee the world is in serious danger of me going Dr Manhattan (minus the blue willy). I only have one a day anyway, in a reusable cup with fair trade coffee.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 01/01/2020 21:22

It's fine with me as long as you use a reusable cup.

managedmis · 01/01/2020 21:25

Nod sagely at the senior dude and say 'yes, I know'

Then just keep on buying cawfee

SproutMuncher · 01/01/2020 21:25

YANBU, especially as you have a reusable cup! I also love a nice coffee shop coffee. One from the kettle at work just isn’t the same!

MistyCloud · 01/01/2020 21:26

@coffeeplease16 It is a waste of money, but then so are a LOT of things. Smoking, boozing, scratchcards, lottery tickets, driving/getting public transport when you could cycle or walk, golf, the gym, football match tickets, and high mobile phone tariffs (I know someone who pays £45 a month!)

I also know someone who spends £75 to £80 a month on her hair and (false) nails. I ALSO know someone who spends £22-25 a week on (take-out) lunches - from M & S and Greggs.

All could be classed as a waste. But as they pay for them with their own hard-earned money, it's got fuck-all to do with anyone else. I'd be so tempted to just say 'what the FUCK has it got to do with YOU what I spend my money on?!' with a kind of Hmm glare......

jeremypaxo · 01/01/2020 21:30

Just lie and say "oh this is instant coffee I made at home!" with a cheery smile, then change the subject.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying yourself a daily coffee if you can afford it. We all need a little treat. Mine is fancy shower gel - fortunately very few people are likely to comment on that!

StoneofDestiny · 01/01/2020 21:31

Tell him to mind his own business!
I buy lots of coffee from coffee shops - I enjoy it, can afford it and can't imagine its anybodies business but mine!
Enjoy.

coffeeplease16 · 01/01/2020 21:32

@allfurcoatnoknickers I love the article! Might just send him the link Wink

Cherrysoup · 01/01/2020 21:32

Go up to him and super quietly tell him that you’d prefer him to stop the constant daily harassment about you buying coffee, it’s not his business what you buy and you’re sick of being singled out for it. Is there a problem? Then back away with a cheery ‘Have a good day!’ He really ought not to be commenting , it is a form of bullying to constantly harp on about it.

Tell him youve bought a really expensive bean to cup coffee machine and are bringing that coffee in every day

In about a month, it will have been worth it. I bought a Sage Barista, I’ll never go to a chain again!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 01/01/2020 21:36

@SinkGirl Agreed! When our bean to cup broke, we bought a cheap(ish) back up so we didn't have to go without 😊. Don't smoke, rarely drink & really enjoy the luxury of a home brewed latte in total peace before the rest of the household start stirring. Bliss!

OP - your money, your pleasure. Enjoy!

Iggy131313 · 01/01/2020 21:39

You can buy as muchcoffee as you like, no ones business what you spend your own money on. You may have seen my thread about my aunts gifts to me this Christmas (title is Aibu to hide these) on that note, I have a beautiful travel mug with my face on it which I can send to you if you like.....

AgeLikeWine · 01/01/2020 21:48

Objectively, your colleague is absolutely right. Buying expensive takeaway coffee every day is a relatively recent concept, and over time the cumulative cost is significant. Many people, including me, regard this habit as a waste of money.

However, it is your money, you earn it, and you should be able to spend it however you wish without others commenting on your choices. As long as you never moan about being skint, that is....

coffeeplease16 · 01/01/2020 21:49

@Iggy131313 I’d love it! Can I have the cushion too

OP posts:
Isleepinahedgefund · 01/01/2020 21:53

I had a colleague who used to comment at length on the environmental credentials of any reusable storage receptacle I brought in to work. It got bloody annoying. Have your opinions, maybe voice them once but then shut up!!

constantlyseekinghappiness · 01/01/2020 21:53

This!

OP you should comment on things he spend his money on. Does he buy lunch out? “So wasteful, you could pack a sandwich for much cheaper”

Brand new expensive mobile phone? “You do know the cheaper ones make calls too...”

He’ll soon stop commenting.

Mum2jenny · 01/01/2020 21:55

Your money, your choice.

However it would not be mine!

Much better things to spend money on than ‘ready to go’ coffees

BaolFan · 01/01/2020 22:01

Much better things to spend money on than ‘ready to go’ coffees

In your opinion. But we're all different - and what's to say that what you spend your money on is right for the OP? And what does it matter to you personally?!

SomethingbeginingwithA · 01/01/2020 22:02

@Mum2jenny - I bet if you listed those things though, someone on here would find them a waste of money too. That's why people shouldn't give their opinion unless they're asked for it.

I think most of what my husband spends money on is a waste of money and he thinks the same about what I spend money on, because people have different interests and priorities.

candycane22 · 01/01/2020 22:07

Go on mum2jenny. List your indulgences so someone can pick at them.

Iggy131313 · 01/01/2020 22:09

@coffeeplease16 don’t be greedy, just the travel mug for you, I’m holding out for someone who feels lonely at night to offer my face cushions to.

totallyradllama · 01/01/2020 22:11

Think easiest to just laugh it off eg say "oh it's actually got whisky in it" etc

If he wasn't senior I would alternatively say it before he does "yeah yeah I know, waste of money blah blah"

FuckingHateRats · 01/01/2020 22:11

Your money, your priorities.

I hate the lectures. Tbf I actually went and bought a fancy machine and take one into work each day but only because it tastes better than the disgusting COSTA coffee that's the drive thru on the way to work. Also get my nails done twice a month. My money, my decision.

Really like the way a PP suggested addressing it but with humour and movement. They'll soon get the hint.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/01/2020 22:14

Oh SinkGirl, what beans do you buy? I have a bean to coffee maker and used to buy beautiful beans from my local fancy coffee shop, but they’ve changed supplier and the new stuff isn’t as good. 😭 I currently have about 8 different flavours/brands but none hit the spot.

SomethingbeginingwithA · 01/01/2020 22:17

@Iggy131313 I hope you find someone who wants to sit on your face soon GrinWink
