To buy coffee everyday and drink it in peace!

I’m one of those people who buy coffee from a coffee shop every morning as I enter the office! I’m aware that a lot of people probably view this as a waste of money but I love coffee, I look forward to it everyday and I can afford it

One of my colleagues comments almost everyday about how much it costs, I could go on a holiday with that money blah blah blah! I have made it very clear that I’m aware that’s the case but I still want to buy a coffee! He will irresolute lecture me for 5mins on how much money I’m wasting! It’s so grating when I just want to drink it in peace

FWIW I never discuss money with him or complain about being broke/going on holiday! I now mostly ignore him but AIBU in finding this so so annoying

OP posts:

I recommend Lavazza crema, no bitter after taste.

Emmelina · 01/01/2020 22:20

DH has a long commute and doesn’t really function well without coffee Wink so between the tube and the office he picks up a coffee and a bun to have at his desk. It’s really in everyone’s best interests to leave him be until it’s gone! Grin YANBU.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 01/01/2020 22:20

Thank you, Cherrysoup, I’ll try that.

GetUpAgain · 01/01/2020 22:23

I feel most sorry for colleague C (who I have imagined) who has to listen to OP getting moaned at every day.

I have a colleague who buys pre cut fruit in plastic packaging; I have another colleague who moans at her about the environmental waste. Repetitive conversations are SO boring especially when neither side is going to change their mind and you don't even have a coffee/fruit pot/financial high horse/environmental reasonableness going for you.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 01/01/2020 22:39

I would not be able to resist a come back whether he was senior or not! Tell him you enjoyed it so much you're going back out at lunch time to get another. The next morning I'd then walk in with 2 and drink them one after the other very very slowly, the whole time looking at him and slurping loudly

Catrescue1971 · 01/01/2020 23:47

I have the same habit. I feel as if I don't drink or smoke and this is my little luxury. You shouldn't have to say anything but you could say that.

Minky35 · 01/01/2020 23:55

I have this issue, I don’t care as I rarely drink and bring my own lunch everyday from home, so as I see it I’m off setting the cost.
The guy goes on about my coffee habit gets his lunches from greggs & kfc so I just him give a 🤷‍♀️

Dipsydoodle · 02/01/2020 00:03

It's not a waste if you get pleasure out of it! I would just smile and say 'Yep but I bloody love it and don't care' and carry merrily on.

tillytrotter1 · 02/01/2020 00:10

Is there nothing you could 'accidentally' trip over when he's distracting you with his harangue?

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/01/2020 00:20

@coffeeplease16 I've done a bunch of work with the author in the past, and she's fab. Grin

Damnloginpopup · 02/01/2020 01:59

Yes, you could go on holiday with the money you save. Then you could drink coffee on holiday. Or, you could have a mini daily coffee holiday and go and drink coffee on holiday with the other money you save by not buying top hats on a weekly basis.

Aebj · 02/01/2020 02:07

While you buy that coffee you are keeping someone employed. Which is important. It also keeps him alive because without coffee you may become a killing machine!!!!

Creepster · 02/01/2020 02:11

You need to tell him that his constant criticism is creating a hostile work environment.

SmuggyMcKnobson · 02/01/2020 10:58

What @Creepster said. FGS - don't make up a lie and don't put up with his annoying lectures.

Tell him that it is how you like to start your day. It's absolutely none of his business how you spend your money and if he keeps on deliberately spoiling your chosen morning routine you will report him.

I can't bear people like this. OK, maybe make the comment once, but every bloody day?

JaceLancs · 02/01/2020 11:08

I probably spend around £500 a year on coffee and it’s worth every penny
It’s my quiet de stress time in a morning sometimes I have porridge or a piece of fruit
Ignore your rude colleague or just be straight and tell them it’s none of their business and becoming boring

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/01/2020 11:28

As long as you have a reusable cup then who cares? It’s not his money to save and how you spend your earnings is none of his business.

People waste money on lots of things, smoking, take away, alcohol, magazines etc, does he lecture them all?

ColourMeExhausted · 02/01/2020 11:42

My morning latte from Pret is the only thing that gets me to work with any enthusiasm and energy! It's my little treat, following the stress of the nursery run and commute, and really helps me switch from mum to worker mode. I have a reusable cup that I don't always remember to take so I refuse to feel guilty. DH did get me a coffee machine but the coffee it makes isn't a patch on what I get from Pret.

I try to minimise spending on everything else, I don't smoke and barely go out drinking/eating anymore, but I work hard and so I don't see why I can't enjoy my morning coffee. So my advice to you - enjoy and ignore!

BadBear · 02/01/2020 11:51

I genuinely don't understand why people feel the need to voice their opinions about other people's spending habits. Think what you like but unless it's your money keep your mouth shut. It's the same with my MD, if I ever buy coffee I keep getting snide comments about what a waste of money and time it is. I never complain about being broke, I love coffee and I can happily sit in a nice cafe (obviously not when at work) reading a nice book.

She constantly moans about being broke but goes through well over 7 bottles of expensive wine per week and can easily spend hundreds of pounds over a couple of nights out.

Every time she makes a remark, I always smile and say 'we all pick our poison' which is definitely not a dig at her drinking habits! Wink

P.s. @T0tallyFuckedUpFamily @Cherrysoup another vote for Lavazza Crema, it's amazing!

Winter2020 · 02/01/2020 11:57

You could tell them "I've done the maths and for just one Carribean holiday I can have 1000! cups of coffee from the coffee shop! Imagine that a cup of coffee on my way to work every morning for 3 years for the price of just one holiday!"

RollaCola84 · 02/01/2020 12:03

I used to work with someone who bought coffee on the way to work every morning, went out and bought lunch and another coffee every day and then complained lucky others were to have multiple holidays a year and she couldn't afford that. It used to wind me up that she couldn't see the link between spending at £10 a day on food and coffee and not having money to go on holiday. Daily shop bought coffee wouldn't be my choice but wouldn't it be dull if we were all the same.

Short answer - your money, your choice. As he's senior I'd say something very short and polite about you choosing how to spend your money. If you give exactly the same response every day he'll either get bored or someone else may tell him to give it a rest.

Bookiewook · 02/01/2020 12:20

YANBU but please use a reusable cup and save yourself 25p a time :)

thecatsthecats · 02/01/2020 12:21

@Mum2jenny

And there are many, MANY more interesting things to talk about.

Forget the details. The core of the matter is that the office bore chooses to nag the OP daily about a habit she clearly has no intention of changing.

What good does that do ANYONE?

I was subject to an office bore who was constantly telling me I could make this that or the other more cheaply. Well, so could she, but I didn't think it was any of my concern to be spewing out advice left right and centre where it wasn't asked for.

MrsMonkeyBear · 02/01/2020 12:23

None of their business on what you spend your money on.

Bet he's the type to buy his lunch time meal deal from the supermarket or from the staff canteen vs bringing in a packed lunch.

BoxedWine · 02/01/2020 12:25

Have you said to him, I would prefer the coffee to the holiday?

nowaypose · 02/01/2020 12:36

I buy a couple every work day too. The college has an in house Starbucks so I can’t resist Grin.
