To buy coffee everyday and drink it in peace!

I’m one of those people who buy coffee from a coffee shop every morning as I enter the office! I’m aware that a lot of people probably view this as a waste of money but I love coffee, I look forward to it everyday and I can afford it

One of my colleagues comments almost everyday about how much it costs, I could go on a holiday with that money blah blah blah! I have made it very clear that I’m aware that’s the case but I still want to buy a coffee! He will irresolute lecture me for 5mins on how much money I’m wasting! It’s so grating when I just want to drink it in peace

FWIW I never discuss money with him or complain about being broke/going on holiday! I now mostly ignore him but AIBU in finding this so so annoying

I always think it a bit odd that no-one can walk or get a train without clutching a coffee (usually with the brickphone in the other hand) but there you go.

also don't workplaces have coffee points any more?

but if you are using a washable mug and ideally buying it from a place that pays tax, don't see why not.

GenevieveB · 02/01/2020 13:49

It’s your money you like coffee, buying or drinking coffee doesn’t involve criminal activity, you’re not complaining about not having enough money for other things so enjoy your coffee please use a reusable cup and don’t let your colleague stress you out, or you might need an extra cup of coffee and that will never do! X

Aha.....couldn’t agree with OP more - it’s none of their business and is is probably a lame attempt at humour.......my advice tell the boss that you’ve even had an extra shot put in it today😏

Vulpine · 03/01/2020 08:03

I agree. I've probs spent loads on coffee over the years. Love it. Things like handbags and shoes however, leave me cold and i think are frivolous. It just depends what your priorities in life are.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/01/2020 08:36

He's probably just grumpy because it's hard for him to watch you having your luxe tastebud moment and to smell the enticing coffee aroma. There may be a certain yearning in his curmudgeonly heart which competes with his expressed pecuniary caution.

Perhaps you need to show more commitment to your profligate caffeinated path. Why not buy him a coffee too from time to time?

It's difficult to sip and grumble simultaneously.

Xmasbaby11 · 03/01/2020 08:41

Yanbu op. I am the same and buy a coffee at work most days. I love it! I can make cafetiere coffee at work but it's not as nice. I can afford it, I use a reusable cup, and it's noone's business.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/01/2020 08:43

YANBU it's your money. Some people spend way more a week on cigarettes, wine etc.

I like Costa coffee, everyone always goes on about how overpriced it is whenever I get one. I know it is, but I like it.

PhoneLock · 03/01/2020 08:46

I'd rather have the holiday so I don't buy coffee and I make my own lunch too.

However, I'd never lecture somebody who does.

DonnaDarko · 03/01/2020 08:51

YANBU I love coffee!

I work from home now and one of my first purchases was a proper coffee machine :D

RhiWrites · 03/01/2020 08:57

So many pieces of advice here that would make me cringe.

I’d go for “Mark, would you mind not commenting on my coffee every morning, can we just agree to differ on this?”

NaomifromMilshake · 03/01/2020 09:02

I have/had a colleague like this constant reference to £££ and holidays, I replied, after years of being broke and finally having no mortgage, thankfully I can do both and turned on my heels and walked off.

And because he was universally loathed I said as I went, oh and did I mention we are flying Club Class. Grin

He didn't need to know Club from Stansted was cheaper than economy from LGW.

Never heard from him again on the coffee front Grin

Beechview · 03/01/2020 09:02

Coffee and holidays! I love them both but I don’t drink at all and am generally not a spender otherwise.
Each to their own. Tell him he’s getting boring waffling on about the expense of coffee.
Or just pre-empt him and say ‘yes yes another day another coffee. How are you today?’

noodlenosefraggle · 03/01/2020 09:10

I love a coffee from the coffee shop. I'm trying to stop going though as I cant stop myself getting a pastry to go with it! OP I dont think you should tell him you make it at home (even if you do) As that great article said, it's about giving unsolicited advice to people, particularly women, so they can feel superior. Savour it in front of him (maybe add in a few moans of pleasure for entertainment value) Talk to him about the decline of the high street being starved off by leisure industries like coffee shops, the rates of unemployment for young people, many of whom work in coffee shops, interest rates for savings being so low it's hardly worth saving and possibly the holiday you're going on while still buying coffee. In short, beat him in a bore off until he shuts up.

AJPTaylor · 03/01/2020 09:23

God, I had the same from my arsehole boss about me buying lunch.
I made sandwiches for the kids. I loved going out for a full hour at lunch, getting a nice sarnie or salad from pret. He, on numerous occasions told me in front of others how I was spending 100 a month on lunch.
Fuck off. It's the only thing that keeps me sane

WhiteVixen · 03/01/2020 11:07

Replace ‘why are you so late?’ with ‘why do you always buy coffee?’

To buy coffee everyday and drink it in peace!
squeekums · 04/01/2020 03:23

How annoying
I'm a huge coffee drinker and i just roll my eyes at people who comment.
Ignore and walk away
Much nicer than me telling them to fuck off and mind their own business

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 04/01/2020 05:34

I mean, one it’s none of their business, two I get the appeal. I’m piss poor, but I spend between 12 and 20 pence a day on a banana for brekkie and get a latte from the Waitrose cafe on my way into work. It’s my one luxury. And my grandma sends me a 20 quid voucher twice a year because she’s on a John Lewis pension so it’s all free! 🥳
