To think teachers are quite well paid?

Newyearnewnameforme · 01/01/2020 09:13

Not intended goadily but my salary is more than most of my graduate friends.

Obviously, it isn’t Rockefeller standards but AIBU to think it’s actually OK?

A private school is the only way that someone without responsibility earns 50k, and in a discussion about teacher salaries to state the 50k thing without the caveat that its a private school is very disingenuous. She didn't do this.

You then went and found jobs that you think show this to have been correct, but have been corrected.

Chip.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 16:08

You deffo have a chip on your shoulder about teachers
Based on the number of times I've seen them doing the same old arguments on pay/conditions/holidays/misinformation about education etc on a range of threads about teacher pay and conditions, you're probably correct.

ChloeDecker · 02/01/2020 16:09

Full TimeSalary: Competitive salary, up to £48,819pa

Do you even read what you post Clavinova? up to £48,819pa , as in from MPS1 to UPS3. Exactly what all the teachers on this thread have stated but only those on UPS3 will get the top salary and often, not given the job as a result. This job could be filled by someone getting MPS1-£22,000.

Salary: £29,064 - £46,326(Ark MPS or UPS (Outer London) £29,064 - £41,036 or £43,078- £46,326, depending on experience)

Ark is a MAT (like the one Ilovesundays works for and we know how those staff are treated and rarely stay in the post long)

Lead Teacher - Science, Northamptonshire
Closing date:27 Jan 2020
The Elizabeth Woodville School
Northamptonshire
Date posted: 20 Dec 2019
Start date: Easter of September 2020
Contract type: Full Time

Salary: £46,685 - £51,564(L6 - L10)
Contract term: Permanent
Suitable for NQTs: No

Elizabeth Woodville is also an academy and that is for an SLT position and not a classroom teacher (like Assistant Head or Deputy Head or similar, hence not suitable for NQTs)

Seriously, just admit that you do not know what you are talking about and stop posting things that just show you to be ill informed about anything to do with actual teaching.

LolaSmiles-you were right!!!

malylis · 02/01/2020 16:09

The poster mentioned no responsibility and a level of pay that isn't achievable by a teacher in a state school without a TLR/leadership spine.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 16:11

ChloeDecker
I don't normally like to give heads ups like that, but I've seen countless threads go the same way, same old arguments, same old goading, same misinformation. It might save people trying to reason.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 16:13

Why on earth would a Church School pay more??

malylis · 02/01/2020 16:13

same endless copy and paste with bad misinterpretation of what things mean?

fedup21 · 02/01/2020 16:15

There’s a teacher who posts on these threads who comments that teaching brings a great salary and work/life balance and have taught in ‘loads’ of different schools so know what they’re talking about, but have never taught full time or in a state school. I forget the name.

ChloeDecker · 02/01/2020 16:18

Academy chains tend to use the TES. Schools that are LEA schools often can't afford it and have to use other routes.

But they also don’t go down the agency route via Reed like Clav posted as that is even more expensive for them, which was my point in that post. You are right that many post on their own school website only and I should have included that and not inferred they only post on TES (but it’s not just Academies that advertise there, in fairness)

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 16:38

Also on Tes - Academy offering £1,500 enhanced allowance for all teachers + healthcare plan:

Teacher of Geography, Swiss Cottage, Camden
Closing date:13 Jan 2020
The UCL Academy, Camden
Swiss Cottage, Camden

Salary: £30,480 - £49,571(Enhanced £1,500 allowance for all teaching staff)
Contract term: Permanent
Suitable for NQTs: Yes
A generous health care plan, including reimbursement for optical, dental, physiotherapy and a range of other areas, 24/7 GP access and discounted membership at over 2,000 gyms nationwide;

Why on earth would a Church School pay more??
I noticed this advert:

Teacher of Science (Golden Hello - additional £10k over 3 years), Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School
Birmingham
Date posted: 16 Dec 2019
Start date: September 2020 (or sooner)
Contract type: Full Time

Salary: Highly competitive salary package (Golden Hello -£10k over 3 years)
Contract term: Permanent
Suitable for NQTs: Yes

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 16:48

And here we go... Hmm

The golden hello is to do with STEM shortages, not a church school.

Yet again showing limited understanding of the system.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 16:49

That's not a Church School paying more, though. That's a reflection of the recruitment crisis with golden handcuffs.

Church Schools do not have different payscales. I don't know that school but I do know Birmingham has distinct recruitment issues.

It may well be the PP's DP has golden handcuffs, but she hasn't been back to confirm.

Other than pointing out that some teachers earn in the 45k+ bracket- which we all know- I don't see the point of your posts clav

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2020 16:49

Most schools can’t recruit science teachers for love nor money.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 16:52

Isn't it funny when 3 posters in education manage to cross post the same explanation for an advert, all refuting the original inaccurate claim.

malylis · 02/01/2020 16:52

Swiss Cottage is inner London and again the pay scale is from NQT to UPS 3.

The golden hello is paid to shortage subjects (although I note here you have conveniently missed out the salary).

Some academies do pay a slightly higher salary but the conditions in many of these academies make it not worth while.

GuyFawkesDay · 02/01/2020 16:53

Stem subjects offer golden hellos to get bums on seats, science teachers (particularly physics) are rare as hens teeth these days.

Clavinova always "contributes" to goady teacher threads I've noticed. Bit like the poo troll Hmm

TheWaiting · 02/01/2020 16:55

None of this is primary. As posted earlier, many primaries are unable to offer any additional points whatsoever. Teachers are simply on MPS/UPS regardless of their additional duties. TAs are also increasingly covering lunchtime duties to save money and despite knowing it’s not ideal, the lower a job candidate is on the pay scale the more attractive a candidate they become.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 16:56

The UCL Academy is also a Govian favourite with multiple sponsors because of its STEM specialism. Hence the sponsors may be providing the healthcare plans.

ChloeDecker · 02/01/2020 17:02

Isn’t Clav interested why a school would have to bribe a teacher to stay 3 years in a post, if there wasn’t a recruitment and retention crisis? Doesn’t that just prove what everyone has been saying on here? Thank you Clav for helping us prove our points on these posts Grin

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:04

although I note here you have conveniently missed out the salary

The advert on Tes doesn't specify the salary!
"Salary: Highly competitive salary package (Golden Hello -£10k over 3 years)"

Clavinova always "contributes" to goady teacher threads I've noticed.

You are the ones who told me I should look at Tes - where (apparently) the salaries are not as high as those advertised through Reed and that individual schools had to stick to the pay scales: "Enhanced £1,500 allowance for all teaching staff."

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:06

None of this is primary.

I don't think they need to (apart from private schools) - there isn't a shortage of people who want to be primary school teachers.

JimmyGrimble · 02/01/2020 17:07

I am a Primary teacher with 20 years experience. I have just broken the 40K barrier. I am very very good at my job, get excellent results and great progress. I do this by working really hard and putting the time in. I take the time to get to know parents and carers and we work together to benefit the children. I lead a core subject (science) for no extra pay and also have a couple of side projects going to benefit thee children. I write the science scheme of work for the whole school, and resource it and monitor teaching and learning. I do it because I am committed to improving the life chances of the children I teach and at this stage I have probably spent thousands of my own money doing it. The OP would describe me as JUST a classroom teacher. Oh well, I can live with that. A core of commenters on Mumsnet get their knicks in a twist about my (unpaid) holidays and that sometimes the parents of kids in my class buy me a bunch of flowers or a box of Quality Street at Christmas. Hey ho. I will not seek to go into management. Telling others how to do their jobs isn’t my thing. Teaching is. I am the main earner for my household and we are not living high on the hog. Mumsnet an think what it likes. You have no idea.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2020 17:08

The enhanced salary is included in what is quoted and - I repeat- that is inner London and an academy.

Private schools also typically don't specify salary : when people get sucked in and the apply, they often discover the salaries to be very similar.

I have just looked at my local area +30 miles and not one classroom teacher job is offering more than £41k.

We all know some teachers earn more than this! I do ! But generally, only for taking on responsibilities, hence the curiosity around the 5ok quoted.

spanieleyes · 02/01/2020 17:11

All you are doing is posting vacancies and salary scales-which no one is disputing. If a post is advertised as £29,000 to £43 000 and suitable for an NQT, then the NQT will be paid £29 000.There are some shortage subjects and shortage areas and so even an NQT might be able to negotiate a higher starting salary but not top of the scale!

ChloeDecker · 02/01/2020 17:17

You are the ones who told me I should look at Tes - where (apparently) the salaries are not as high as those advertised through Reed and that individual schools had to stick to the pay scales: "Enhanced £1,500 allowance for all teaching staff."

Nope. That was me and you still haven’t fully taken in what I have said about Reed and random agencies I see, which rarely fill posts, which you obviously don’t fully understand. And the salaries are not so high on TES either and your copies and pastes show that to those who understand how this all works. Can you really really not see that and still not understand how pay scales work after many have explained on this thread? Please spend some of your time researching today, learning how pay scales work, darling, instead of posting more ads to prove us right.
