To think teachers are quite well paid?

Newyearnewnameforme · 01/01/2020 09:13

Not intended goadily but my salary is more than most of my graduate friends.

Obviously, it isn’t Rockefeller standards but AIBU to think it’s actually OK?

Cardinal wiseman can't recruit for love nor money (as shown). Nor can many schools around Birmingham when it comes to Science and Maths! All that advert shows is that there is a Science teacher shortage and they are desperate for anyone to fill the post.

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:22

Last one - private school - maternity cover:

Economics Teacher (late Jan early Feb 2020) - Maternity Cover up to 12 months, Southbank International School, Westminster:

Salary: £44,892pa - £67,927pa (depending on experience) Full Time and pro rata for Part Time.

spanieleyes · 02/01/2020 17:22

And one of the reasons they can't recruit is that graduates with science and maths backgrounds can earn considerably more in other occupations-which is what we have been saying from the beginning!

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:27

If a post is advertised as £29,000 to £43 000 and suitable for an NQT, then the NQT will be paid £29 000.

Yes - I think we all understand that - I forgot you were 22.

Teachermaths · 02/01/2020 17:27

Completely agree Spanieleyes.

That Economics advert is a private school with a very niche subject. Not exactly mainstream teaching.

malylis · 02/01/2020 17:28

Private school and inner London, not a good example.

Teachermaths · 02/01/2020 17:28

"suitable for an NQT" is code for "don't bother applying if you are above M3".

IamTheAntiChrist · 02/01/2020 17:29

Joke thread surely?

London IC schools in a parlous state. Cannot recruit, let alone retain.

No new/relatively young teacher can afford to buy a home in London - pie in the sky.

Hands up who voted for this deliberate starving of the state system?

Not me mate.

spanieleyes · 02/01/2020 17:30

I forgot you were 22

Not quite sure where this came from, given my children are mid 20's, it would be unusual to say the least!

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:35

That Economics advert is a private school with a very niche subject.

That's why I posted, "private school - maternity cover"
Economics is an extremely popular A-level in my ds' school.

The op says she earns £47,000 pa - are you disbelieving her as well?

noblegiraffe · 02/01/2020 17:36

Oh, who woke up Clav the DfE propaganda unit?

Tw1nset · 02/01/2020 17:38

Nobody is saying that teachers don't earn £47k. I earn that and then more on top from freelance work - but it is not a typical salary and requires responsibility and not everybody can or even wants to be a head of department or senior leader.

ChloeDecker · 02/01/2020 17:40

That's why I posted, "private school -maternity cover"*
Economics is an extremely popular A-level in my ds' school.

And this post is not about private school teachers. In addition, the problem with an Economics cover is that because they won’t have much of a timetable in most of the summer term, most are often asked to leave, to save money and the Year 12 classes covered internally.

The op says she earns £47,000 pa - are you disbelieving her as well?

No one disbelieved the OP but then the OP is not a classroom teacher as they have admitted. Did you miss that?

fedup21 · 02/01/2020 17:40

The op says she earns £47,000 pa

And implying that all teachers can earn this, which is the problem.

GuyFawkesDay · 02/01/2020 17:40

Average teacher salary is £37 I think?

And obviously that's skewed by the MAT heads who are still included on their £150k salaries.

Many teachers find they can't get through threshold any more (bosses finding reasons to deny it to save money) and are stuck on M6. It's a disincentive to work.

Teachermaths · 02/01/2020 17:40

Economics is a niche subject usually only studied at A Level. There are very few pure Economics teachers. I'd guess the private school will be looking at unqualified staff too with an Economics background. Therefore offering higher wages to attract an Economics graduate away from the city.

A popular A Level subject in one school doesn't mean its offered everywhere. Your sample size is one school. Most schools near me don't offer it because they haven't got the staff to.

Clavinova · 02/01/2020 17:41

Oh, who woke up Clav the DfE propaganda unit?

Did I mention all the state school teachers near me who leave work at 3.30 and take on private tutoring? Grin

IamTheAntiChrist · 02/01/2020 17:41

Ever been in the thick of it with Y11s, Clav?

Teachermaths · 02/01/2020 17:42

I don't disbelieve the OP. But she isn't representative of average teaching salaries as this thread has shown. She's at the upper end and isn't "just" a classroom teacher. The average teacher salary is £29k from a quick Google.

Teachermaths · 02/01/2020 17:43

Did I mention all the state school teachers near me who leave work at 3.30 and take on private tutoring?

To supplement their not great income.

I bet they go home and work all evening too.

Walkaround · 02/01/2020 17:49

Clavinova - There absolutely is a shortage of primary teachers applying for advertised posts in state primaries in the South East outside of London and which do not benefit from London weighting of any sort. And that’s because the pay and working conditions are frankly pretty crap for the location. Loads of better paid jobs available for less work.

LolaSmiles · 02/01/2020 17:54

Teachermaths
No no no. Despite your extensive experience you are wrong.
They earn over £50,000 working 9-3, have no marking or meetings, get paid overtime for revision sessions and have an hour uninterrupted lunch. They take on tutoring because they feel the need to top up their high incomes and they need to fill all the time they have left in their lives, and don't even get me started on the holidays that the taxpayer pays for. Wink

I've got a great game of Clavinova bingo going on from my sofa.

JimmyGrimble · 02/01/2020 17:59

Did I mention all the state school teachers who finish at 3.30 and take on private tutoring
I’ve done bar work and leafleting before now to supplement my wage as a senior teacher. And still had to do my marking, planning and prep for the next day.

IamTheAntiChrist · 02/01/2020 18:08

Clavinova you are soo jealous aren't you? and resentful? poor you. Failed your NQT year did you Wink?

I've met parents like you at parents' evenings, always trying to get the better of the staff but never managing. You're funny.

WaterSheep · 02/01/2020 18:14
