To want to start a national campaign called Not Everyone Likes Prosecco

MiseryChops · 27/12/2019 17:38

I hate prosecco.
It tastes horrible.
The fizz is horrible.
I never drink it.
I tell everyone I don’t like it....

... yet every year I receive it as a Xmas present and a birthday present.

... any Xmas doo or similar I have been to there is ‘free prosecco’ wether it be handed to you at the door or is laid out on the table.

I’ve mentioned it so many times in real life that I don’t get why it’s popular, it tastes vile etc. I’ve said it in the presence of people (ie my own mum!) and yet I open the wrapping paper to find another bloody bottle of pissy prosecco.

I have a kitchen cupboard with 8 bottles in. Don’t know what to do with it.

So I just want to send the message out that
NOT EVERYONE LIKES PROSECCO.

Or NELP as I will call my campaign.

Or PAP
People against prosecco.

It is the Emperor’s New Clothes of drinks, a triumph of marketing over taste.

The whole gin thing annoys me too, it’s like cider a few years ago, ‘how can we make a cheap nasty drink become fashionable and make £££’

WelcomeToShootingStars · 27/12/2019 22:26

I'm not the world's biggest lover of prosecco. But it's alright with some flavoured syrup or juice in.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 27/12/2019 22:33

But I've drank gin since I was 13 so well over 20 years now. I like it being so popular as it means I can get a decent G&T rather than Gordons which I wouldn't give you a dime for. Not into all the decor shit though.

StoneofDestiny · 27/12/2019 22:43

Odd this thread.
I like Prosecco and usually take a bottle to parties, whereas others take red or white wine.
However, after 1 drink I go to get another and find wine drinkers have drunk the Prosecco!

AllNewCheeses · 27/12/2019 22:49

WireBrushAndDettolMaam - don't leave the bottles on top of the fridge if you're going to regift them. We did that with some wine and the heat coming up from the back of the fridge ruined them.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 27/12/2019 22:58

Oh thanks @AllNewCheeses! I didn’t know that. Will get them down now.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 27/12/2019 23:38

Nononever

Thanks for that. Grin I can never unsee it.

junecat · 27/12/2019 23:44

YANBU, hate the stuff. I got given 12 bottles a couple of years ago and despite trying to offload a couple of bottles at every BBQ we are invited to we still have some left.

FruityWidow · 27/12/2019 23:46

Yep. Hate the stuff but it's good to use in cooking instead particularly fondue. Doesn't matter if it goes flat then too.

Muddlingalongalone · 28/12/2019 08:27

Not a fan - gives me heartburn. Ok as a bucks fizz.
Love gin though - traditional or flavoured (some); there is a special place in hell reserved for the creator of Parma violet gin!

Have to admire the marketing guru who created the prosecco buzz as the new big thing after cava and created this craze though along with her or his predecessors who reframed cider as an acceptable drink not reserved for tramps (Thank you magnets, bulmers & koppaberg).
I will not be switching over to rum/negronis though or whiskey when that inevitably comes after.

Actionhasmagic · 28/12/2019 08:40

I don’t like it much rather would have one nice glass of champagne than 3 glasses of Prosecco

Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas · 28/12/2019 09:26

I'm in, where's my badge?

Much prefer a dry cava than a sickly prosecco. Freixenet, who make a very decent cava, have now jumped on the bandwagon and are producing prosecco. Traitors!

Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas · 28/12/2019 09:33

I first had some in Italy many years ago when I’d never heard of it before - I’m sure the Italians aren’t complaining about its popularity but I do wonder how such a small region manages to keep up with the demand.

I'm no wine expert but I understand that our imported prosecco is made from inferior grapes grown on lower terrain. The real thing is undoubtedly superior, but we don't get to drink it.

lilgreen · 28/12/2019 09:35

I know! Would rather a bottle of Cava if it’s about price; much better fizz.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 28/12/2019 09:37

I don't like any kind of sparkling wine, mainly because it gives me raging heartburn even after just a few sips, so I'm totally with you OP!

Cornettoninja · 28/12/2019 09:39

I’ll sign up for that. I bloody detest the stuff but then I don’t like champagne or any white wine generally.

I could let it lie if people didn’t treat it as something everybody automatically loves; it seems to be the go to offering for any alcoholic drink. I don’t want it even it’s free!

I’m waiting for red wine to get it’s turn in the spotlight although I’m probably a troglodyte where that’s concerned too - I love a good Rioja but also make red wine spritzers with red grape juice and the cheaper stuff Grin

lilgreen · 28/12/2019 09:40

I seem to remember that whereas Champagne and Cava bubbles come from the fermentation process, Prosecco is artificially carbonated.

guineapig1 · 28/12/2019 09:40

Another one who prefers Cava or a nice Cremant. Prosecco is generally far too sweet, soapy and flowery for my taste. In this house it is used in cocktails!

FizzyIce · 28/12/2019 10:19

I like Prosecco more than champagne which is too dry for me but then I also don’t assume everyone likes it ..

Stewart12 · 28/12/2019 21:53

I don't like Prosecco, too fizzy
I prefer milk instead
It's still and white, my favourite color

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 28/12/2019 22:57

i want to start a not every one drinks you know movement
im teetotal and been all my life, not one drop of alcohol has ever passed my lips,im also anti alcohol and think it should get banned

the shops seem to think we are a nation of alkies which tbh is probably true, the teetotalers are in the minority

majority of gifts available this year in the shops were all alcohol related

this year gin or prescco everywhere, even on bloody clothing and candles.

i really liked a pair of pajamas in tesco ,picked them up and realized it was mini procecco bottles all over it,they went straight back

Cryingoverspilttea · 28/12/2019 22:59

It's Grape Beer. It absolute cheap, disgusting, shite. It is not a 'wine'. They just market it as one.

Grim stuff.

Sewrainbow · 28/12/2019 23:03

I dont like prosecco

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 28/12/2019 23:12

I dont hate it but I would never go out of my.way to drink it. I just dont get the whole spiel with prosecco and gin, they're drinks not something to decorate your life with.

I must admit I used to be partial to a bottle of Martini Asti (nasty asti as we called it) back in my uni days but I havent had it in years. Tempted to buy a bottle and compare it with prosecco to see if they are indeed the same.

Time40 · 28/12/2019 23:18

Prosecco is just the Blue Nun of the 21st Century. I suppose there has to be one.
