I am dreading tomorrow because of religion!

StinkyXmasCheese · 24/12/2019 21:01

Dreading tomorrow with my family.
They are all strong in their faith Christians and I know there will be praying and thanking god etc.
I was brought up Christian but am no longer and I'm actually quite angry about religion at the moment. (Working through these issues with my counsellor.)
I know Christmas is a Christian holiday but I know I can't have a drink or I'll say something to cause an argument and I have to bite my tongue.
I've already said to dh that we're going away for Xmas next year cos I just don't want to deal with it.
I don't know how I'm going to get through the day without letting something slip!

OP hasn't said anything to suggest she was abused though damefanny, so that's probably why people are missing the notion. It would be a pretty massive assumption to make. Though if they were abusive, that would be all the more reason not to go.

Josette77 · 25/12/2019 12:53

Op has not said she was abused. She just says her family believe it as fact and taught her this.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/12/2019 12:58

I am having to sit through a lot of bullshit from my bigoted BIL today. He irritates me, but I manage by buttoning my lips. It isn't difficult

Then why isn’t it difficult for your BIL to curtail his bigoted bullshit?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/12/2019 13:00

Yes, don't drink OP. If you do go round knowing you feel like this and knowing that alcohol might make you cause trouble, it'll be your fault

Go, get drunk and be happy:). If that involves calling their bullshit then go for it.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/12/2019 13:02

I'm really surprised by all the sanctimonious responses

Not to mention the mindless ones with the stupid American videos.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 13:51

@YetAnotherSpartacus Why you resort to name calling rather than attempting to disprove the content of said videos. The very fact you can’t speaks volumes.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 13:51

*should be a “do” between the “why” and the “you”.

DameFanny · 25/12/2019 13:54

boxedwine and Josette
No one gets that worked up about 2 minutes holding hands saying grace, but holding a lot of anger for someone else's beliefs, and being in counselling for these issues, does suggest abuse to me

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2019 14:09

Go, get drunk and be happysmile. If that involves calling their bullshit then go for it.

Yes, go round to someone's house, get drunk and 'call them out' for daring to have views you don't agree with. You'd make an excellent TRA, Spartacus :-)

If OPs parents were dicks growing up there are better times to discuss it and there religiosity is not the primary cause.

Why you resort to name calling rather than attempting to disprove the content of said videos.

In fairness, that video is stupid. PP is no more obligated to refute 'proof' that God exists than that the earth is flat.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 14:14

@donquixotedelamancha still no actual details other than a vague insult. I never asked originally for you to disprove it but if you are going to make a claim on a public forum you should be able to justify said claim. So I will ask (although I don’t anticipate a good answer-there isn’t one available) what about said videos that isn’t factual?

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 14:15

*is it

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2019 14:16

No one gets that worked up about 2 minutes holding hands saying grace, but holding a lot of anger for someone else's beliefs, and being in counselling for these issues, does suggest abuse to me

Possibly, but I can raise that level of anger for my largely good, kind and supportive parents within two minutes of discussing their Views on several subjects- religion included.

I could list the many ways they are dicks (I've already had to shut down a racist comment today) but ultimately the grown up thing is to be generous without being a doormat.

donquixotedelamancha · 25/12/2019 14:20

if you are going to make a claim on a public forum you should be able to justify said claim

Why? All this chatter is just entertainment, it hold no obligations. Also, saying a video is stupid in its premise is not an insult to anyone.

Dissecting videos is long and boring, but by all means start a thread with your best arguments instead of derailing this one and I may have a go.

GladAllOver · 25/12/2019 14:28

I get far, far more angry having to sit quietly while my in-laws go on about how wonderful Brexit will be and all those *** get sent home.
If that happens again tomorrow I shall just get up and leave.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 14:32

@donquixotedelamancha so to be clear you are unwilling or unable to say why you think the way you do after some of the comments from PPs about Christianity don’t you think it is a little ironic?

BoxedWine · 25/12/2019 18:58

Essentially you have just invented a backstory damefanny, so with that in mind you can't really be surprised that other people haven't factored in your armchair diagnoses.

StinkyXmasCheese · 25/12/2019 20:52

@Takethebuscuitandthesink
The first video I watched, it shows zero evidence what so ever, merely opinions and theories.

I survived, I bit my tongue a few times but they were fairly restrained thankfully. All is well!

OP posts:
BoxedWine · 25/12/2019 21:00

For the best! And for 2020 I think you'd benefit from working through this.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/12/2019 21:54

Takethebuscuit

Your video annoyed me because this was a thread where the OP has grown up with a degree of religiosity and proselytising that has left her deeply uncomfortable.
Instead of respecting how she felt you posted a video that did more of the same.

Trust me, if you’ve grown up in a religious household you have heard it all before.

NeedAnExpert · 25/12/2019 22:02

Fuck me Buscuit. I made it through 6 mins of that video (on fast forward). Talk about straw men. Straw men fucking everywhere. “Design needs a designer”? Fuck off.

I hope you don’t partake of any scientific/mainstream medical care if you believe even 10% of that shite.

NeedAnExpert · 25/12/2019 22:03

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
Epicurus

And which of the thousands of gods that have been written about are you talking about?

Paintedmaypole · 25/12/2019 22:15

Large numbers of people are brought up in a particular religion or culture which they reject as an adult. Sometimes they don't reject it completely but shift their position from fundamentalist to more liberal or vice versa. You say that you " found out it wasn't true" which implies a strong belief that you are right and they are wrong. Perhaps it would be more helpful to say that you found it didn't resonate with you or that you found that you couldn't share their faith. Do they still push you to believe the same as them? Do you feel that you have to convince them that they are wrong. Try to live and let live and not get hooked into it.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 23:15

@StinkyXmasCheese how exactly does it show zero evidence it is packed full of evidences. @NeedAnExpert please see this link www.gotquestions.org/God-allow-evil.html also please can you disprove anything he said other than with vague insults. @ChazsBrilliantAttitude I have not attacked the op or been rude I have simply presented a compelling case and so far no one has been able to dispute or disprove any of the evidences I have put forward-other than with vague insults.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 25/12/2019 23:21

@NeedAnExpert in the context of me previous stating I am a Christian and the links to 5 different Christian webpages/videos I think it is obvious the answer is the God of the bible.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/12/2019 23:24

You are the exact sort of person that reminds me why I dislike organised religion so much.

The arrogance you are displaying is utterly unchristian. You are showing no respect or understanding of the OP or her struggles but are instead ploughing on with your evangelical mission. No compassion, no understanding, no sympathy, no kindness.
In trying to push your belief in the Bible forward so zealously you have managed to ignore its central tenets.
