I am dreading tomorrow because of religion!

Dreading tomorrow with my family.
They are all strong in their faith Christians and I know there will be praying and thanking god etc.
I was brought up Christian but am no longer and I'm actually quite angry about religion at the moment. (Working through these issues with my counsellor.)
I know Christmas is a Christian holiday but I know I can't have a drink or I'll say something to cause an argument and I have to bite my tongue.
I've already said to dh that we're going away for Xmas next year cos I just don't want to deal with it.
I don't know how I'm going to get through the day without letting something slip!

*obsessed to the point of becoming unhinged.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 20:29

Oh, she’ll be back. Her fruitloop version of God sent her on a mission to evangelise Mn.

TooManyPaws · 27/12/2019 20:44

What I find interesting is that most fundies actually don't know the Bible terribly well and haven't studied its history. Fundies used to picket events such as Witchfest and the Pagan Federation conferences and suffered consternation by being brought cups of tea and soup, and being out-argued on the Bible. A friend used to have her local evangelists round regularly; she reckoned it was for training as it was always the same bloke with a new colleague each time, and only the new one trying to answer her questions and arguments 😂

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 21:01

Indeed, @TooManyPaws. Of course, if you believe that the Bible is the infallible, eternal Word of God, literally true in every syllable, and magically unaltered through time and translation, presumably the idea of studying the development and dating of a motley collection of history, folklore, erotica, proverbs, oral tradition etc, or the Koine Greek, is almost blasphemy.

Madhairday · 27/12/2019 21:58

Sadly I think that's true in some cases, Feigning. As a theologian myself who has studied the development of scripture in a good amount of depth I've been told I should leave it alone and stop trying to apply textual criticism and interpretative tools. Yet for me, as a Christian, one of the most compelling things for me is applying these tools to the Bible and discovering layers of text and meaning that bring it more to life for me, as well as helping me understand the awkward parts a little more and help me apply it to my life as well. But I'm nowhere near fundamentalist in my understanding. It's a little disconcerting standing between two camps here, told I'm thick and deluded for being a Christian, or told I'm not enough of a Christian. Sigh...

There are so many things on this thread I'd love to enter into rigorous debate over, especially regarding the bible, but again think it's not the place. Perhaps see some of you over on philosophy/religion sometime.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2019 22:07

Is Buscuits had started her own thread eg AIBU to remind you that Christmas is meaningless without Jesus then that would have been fine in my view whether or not I agreed with her. It was the hijacking of this thread that annoyed me. I felt the disregard of the OP’s feelings was completely at odds with what the message of Christianity is supposed to be.

I also have concerns about anyone who blindly appears to follow any belief system without some critical thought.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 22:41

I don’t think you’re thick and deluded for being a a Christian, @Madhairday — although I do see religion as a human construction. I do think dimwitted fundamentalists are thick, though. If you are going to base your entire belief system on a set of texts being literally true and inerrant, then refusing the most elementary knowledge about those texts and their history is a wilful embrace of blind stupidity.

@Madhair, was that you on a long running thread from ages ago about historical proofs of the existence of Jesus? Or am I confusing you with someone else? It was very interesting.

Madhairday · 27/12/2019 22:44

Thanks, Feigning. :)

Yes, that was me. I've been here a long time

Paintedmaypole · 27/12/2019 22:46

madhair I will take a look at the philosophy and religion section. I guess fundamentalists would say that I wasn't Christian but that some posters would ridicule me over pretend friends etc.

xJodiex · 27/12/2019 22:52

@feigning horror Xmas Grin I guessed that, lol! It baffles me that people don't research this stuff properly Smile

xJodiex · 27/12/2019 23:04

Thank you @scarecrowhead for the link Smile

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 27/12/2019 23:48

I am glad biscuit showed how these loons work.

Those of us who escaped religion often get treated like we are being silly in how viscerally we react to being around our families being religious at us for a mere few hours or days. Why can't we just brush it off, ignore it?

So, I am glad people saw biscuit in action. The thrall of the cult is so strong it warps any sense of human kindness and of common sense.

It is exhausting to be faced with the likes of biscuit every moment of your Christmas holidays with family, especially after years of this stupid shite being forced down your throat. This is why OP @StinkyXmasCheese was dreading it. I know how she feels. It is so so wearing.

Such unnecessary hyperbole Happens to be a fact.

Clearly it does need explaining, because NO ONE is suggesting people can't express their opinions about religion well, you are. You’ve decided, all by your little self, what is an acceptable opinion and what isn’t.

....just that THIS thread is not appropriate for it. Nothing is stopping that poster from creating a thread specifically to debate the issue. FML

Who made you Queen of the thread? It’s not even yours! Jeez.

A demonstration of what the OP was almost certainly talking about was pretty timely. But the “report culture” and smug virtue signalling that infests every single thread is, of course, evident as ever.

@Madhairday Gosh. You’re a theologian now, eh? That was quick. Wasn’t that long ago you had to Google to find basic responses to atheist challenges.

WestBerlin · 28/12/2019 00:27

How about fuck off and take your god with you.

You’ve been told repeatedly to back off and refused to accept it. No one is interested in your evangelizing. This is the last bit of time I’m prepared to waste on you.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 28/12/2019 00:27

Same question right back at you. Is there anything we can say to make you see you are believing utterly delusional nonsense?

ChestnutSmoothie · 28/12/2019 00:28

Poe’s law:

“Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is utterly impossible to parody a Creationist in such a way that someone won't mistake for the genuine article”.

ChestnutSmoothie · 28/12/2019 00:29

I sussed you at Ray Comfort, Biscuit.

Keep winding them up, though Wink

@Ohsweetnightingale1 / Takethebuscuitandthesink
If you cant see what is wrong with your hateful posts and videos then nothing anyone can say is going to get through to you.

SarahNade · 28/12/2019 00:36

@Ohsweetnightingale1 If you check your email account attached to your original username, you'll most likely find an email from MumsNet (usually 'Mumsnet calling') telling you they have temporarily suspended you or whatever due to some breach of the guidelines, and for how long the suspension lasts.

Your videos were removed I think because you were spamming the entire thread with them, even after people asked you to stop.

FeigningHorror · 28/12/2019 00:37

Gosh, it’s like the Jehovah’s Witnesses continually ringing the doorbell and shoving the Watchtower through the letterbox when you tell them to sod off.
