I am dreading tomorrow because of religion!

Dreading tomorrow with my family.
They are all strong in their faith Christians and I know there will be praying and thanking god etc.
I was brought up Christian but am no longer and I'm actually quite angry about religion at the moment. (Working through these issues with my counsellor.)
I know Christmas is a Christian holiday but I know I can't have a drink or I'll say something to cause an argument and I have to bite my tongue.
I've already said to dh that we're going away for Xmas next year cos I just don't want to deal with it.
I don't know how I'm going to get through the day without letting something slip!

So just to be clear @mostlydrinkstea what do you believe the bible to be: 1) inspired 2) inerrant 3) the word of God 4) an authority for believers while bearing in mind 2 Timothy 3:16?

mostlydrinkstea · 27/12/2019 15:16

Or if you want a Bible verse then Paul in Athens in Acts 17 listens to the culture of the Greek works and then reframed the gospel message in a language and philosophy that can be understood by his hearers. You are talking at the posters here. You are not listening to them and that is just rude.

Ask questions. Listen to the answers. Be prepared to be challenged.

If God is benign and created humans in their own image, why do we have mosquitoes?

www.who.int/neglected_diseases/vector_ecology/mosquito-borne-diseases/en/

And could Noah have just left them behind?
Also if the size of the Ark is correct then how did two of every animal actually fit on there with sufficient food.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 15:32

Having said that @mostlydrinkstea have you seen some of the blasphemy upthread?

WestBerlin · 27/12/2019 15:44

Can continue it down thread too if you like?

It’s hardly surprising a reaction when you insist on proselytising to people who have clearly said they don’t want to to be preached to.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2019 15:57

Takethebuscuitandthesink follow mostlydrinkstea’s advice.

Take time to learn and understand your own relationship with your faith. You come over as someone whose faith is based on what other people tell you your religious texts say and mean. You haven’t displayed understanding or critical thought and you have studiously avoided any tricky questions so far.
Deepen your own understanding before trying to persuade others.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 15:59

@WestBerlin what about all the PPs attacking and deriding Christianity (and I’m not talking about just in response to me) particularly early on in the thread).

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 27/12/2019 16:04

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude what tricky questions have I avoided I am aware I haven’t answered some and that is mainly due to the fact I have been sidetracked. The reason I have used a lot of external resources is because they can articulate the point in a better way than I can. @mostlydrinkstea an I are from completely different strands of Christianity. As far as I can tell that is and I will look into the logistics of Noah’s ark.

WestBerlin · 27/12/2019 16:07

It’s a thread started by someone clearly impacted by negative experiences with Christianity, and she’s clearly not the only one. Incidentally, you coming along in it’s defence has spectacularly backfired and inspired more hostility.

Christians are not a protected class exempt from criticism, and blasphemy is not a crime. If you don’t like it by all means leave the thread, and if you want a respectful debate head to the spirituality forum and start your own thread there.

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 16:07

Noah's Ark isn't possible, a wooden boat of that size is impossible to build.

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 16:08

A scientist on here explains the impossibility of Noah's ark. Other creationist myths are debunked too

StoneofDestiny · 27/12/2019 16:14

Tolerance! You believe what you believe and I believe otherwise.
Immature relationships were disagreement isn't allowed. If they are true Christians, the virtue of tolerance is one they should be demonstrating.

StoneofDestiny · 27/12/2019 16:21

I might have missed it, but are your family fundamentalist Christians. If their beliefs screwed you over this much, it sounds pretty extreme.

Thoughtlessinengland · 27/12/2019 16:25

This thread was started by someone uncomfortable with religion. Why have you chosen this thread to come and evangelise Dear BuscuitsandSink? And move to a country where “blasphemy” is a thing and an offence? Because it isn’t a thing here. Hail Satan. Thanks to you for inspiring that. Well done. You’ve achieved exactly the opposite of what you wanted to achieve. And frankly if you believe in Noah’s Fucking Boat your level of logic critique and reasoning is beneath nada.

ChestnutSmoothie · 27/12/2019 16:32

@ChestnutSmoothie due to its highly designed nature and also we know that the universe had a beginning. It would break the law of cause and effect to suggest that the universe just spontaneously created itself...

What’s a “highly designed nature”? What evidence is there of “design”?

Who said the universe “created itself”?

Have you ever read an actual science book?

ChestnutSmoothie · 27/12/2019 16:37

What are your qualifications, @TakeTheBiscuit?

For the past 200 odd years 99.999999% of biologists, physicists, geologists & chemists have accepted the FACT of evolution.

But you know better. Have you written a peer reviewed paper?

OP, if you're still around, I'm sorry you've had a difficult experience with an upbringing which you feel forced things upon you and gave you little choice. It must be very difficult to visit if you feel that kind of narrative is continued in your parents' home. I'm a Christian but have always represented different views to my DC - told them it is their choice and that as a family we like to use our reason and rigourously question our faith. I'm sad when I hear of people who force faith on kids rather than sharing faith and sharing the ability to question as well. I hope you're ok today.

Waves to mostlydrinkstea :)

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 27/12/2019 17:03

What do you think about dinosaurs biscuit?Neanderthals? Cave paintings? Evolution driven by humans, e.g. selective breeding of animals/plants like for more meaty hindquarters, more wool, disease resiatance? Real or a big conspiracy? If conspiracy, who is organising it? If real how does that match up with the bible as true?

They compost?

scarecrowhead · 27/12/2019 17:08

What happened to all the ones who died before Jesus was even born or happened to live in a part of the world where Christianity was unheard of ? Are they condemned to hell when there was no way of them accepting Jesus ?
And on the evolutionary front - what about the evolution of disease ? Antibiotic resistance is scientific fact.
