So basically my standpoint is employers essentially pay you before Xmas.

My delightful Sc says this isn't the case, needs money urgently for presents. They do a normal 9-5 job as an apprenticeship.

Would anyone be willing to share if they got paid now please?

I've never actually worked for a company who pay you early. And tbh, if they do, it'd leave you short in January. I wish people would learn to budget, or spread the cost. I've bought a few presents from each pay since August, and haven't really felt the pinch.

coffeeandpyjamas · 24/12/2019 11:50

My DH normally gets paid on the last working day of the month, but is paid on the 20th in December. Makes January a bit of a stretch but it’s good to have the December pay early in case of last minute Xmas expenses. I get paid on the 19th every month so don’t have it any different in December.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 24/12/2019 12:02

My last job payday was the 20th of each month. Not all companies pay you early, some will do a Christmas advance but it's not a universal rule.

Petrichor11 · 24/12/2019 12:40

I got paid yesterday and will also be paid a week early in January.

But who’s to know whether theirs does? There’s no universal rule, each employer will do it slightly differently.

However unless they’ve only just started working they’ve had previous wages and plenty of time to get presents before now, Christmas is hardly a massive shock! If you lend them money now they’ll be short in January and probably turn to you again.

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 24/12/2019 12:42

Mine pay on the penultimate working day of every month no matter what. So it will be 30th this month.

I like it as I won’t spend it before Christmas and have nothing for Jan!

AmIthechristmasfairy · 24/12/2019 12:45

We get paid a few days early

What's a SC?

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/12/2019 12:59

SC = step child.

AmIthechristmasfairy · 24/12/2019 13:06

Thanks Tatty. I couldn't work it out.

Jupiters · 24/12/2019 13:17

27th for me.

Some companies do, some don't. It depends on the specific company... Doesn't really matter what all of our workplaces do, only what your SC one does.

FriedasCarLoad · 24/12/2019 13:19

Former accountant here. Some pay early in December. Plenty don't.

LizB62A · 24/12/2019 16:22

We got paid a week early (usually the 27th, paid on the 20th this month) but it does make January a really long month.
Some of my colleagues transfer their salary into their savings for that week to stop them overspending so they, and I, would actually prefer to be paid at the usual time, and not early

PaganPriestess · 24/12/2019 19:58

I've worked for decades, my experience ins you get paid just before Xmas.

It's not as much the money is really needed, it's more that when every pay cheque comes through, something happens so they have no money. Then you end up arguing as either / both of you have succumbed to whatever's said.

If your SC is on an apprenticeship they probably don't earn very much. Have you tried to help with budgeting advce?

Tanfastic · 24/12/2019 20:13

I get paid on the 6th January. I'm pretty skint now but I get paid very poorly.

Lougle · 24/12/2019 20:15

NHS here, normally get paid on the day before the last working day of the month, which would be 30th December this month, but got paid one week early. DH works for the LA and will get his on the last working day of the month, so Tuesday.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/12/2019 20:31

I got paid on 20th. It's going to be a very long month. We usually get paid on the 26th of the month.

Ffsnosexallowed · 24/12/2019 20:34

I got paid early, dp didn't. I get paid early in Jan too

Nat6999 · 24/12/2019 20:38

When I was a Civil Servant, we always got paid on the last working day of the month, at Christmas we could apply for a Christmas Advance which was 50% of gross pay payable on 20 December. Anyone who claimed it always moaned that January was a very long month.

Coffeeisnecessary · 24/12/2019 20:42

I do payroll for my company, I've processed it today and set it to pay on 27th as usual this month. I asked around our employees and they all said they'd rather have it as normal, otherwise it's such a long time to wait for January!

Theluggagerules · 24/12/2019 20:45

Due to get paid 25th, got paid 19th. Really wish they hadn't as January is very long month

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 24/12/2019 20:56

I was nearly always paid early, except for when I was paid every 4 weeks in local government and the timings meant Christmas didn't mess with payroll. DH is paid early in the month so he's not been paid differently to account for Christmas whilst at his current company (I think he did get paid early once due to Easter). I've always thought it was due to whether it gives payroll and easier time or not rather than thinking staff may want it earlier.

TheMostHappy · 24/12/2019 21:04

Civil service here and my pay day is always part working day of the month - December being no different.

BorisForPM · 25/12/2019 01:00

@Theluggagerules just because they pay you doesn’t mean you have to spend it?

BahBloodyHumbug · 25/12/2019 01:03

I get paid early in December but don't like. It's six weeks until the next payday now. I'd rather have it at the normal time.

steff13 · 25/12/2019 06:03

Does everyone get paid once a month there? I'm paid biweekly. I only get paid early if the payday falls on a holiday. This month it was the 6th and the 20th, next month I have three paydays.
