Lip Fillers

What the fuck are these young women doing to their lips?

Saw a girl in Lidl today who clearly had naturally thin lips. Had a huge fillet in her top lip. All it looks like is someone with a huge filler, not someone with lovely generous lips, see it all the time and it looks horrific.

What happens when they hit 40?

How much does it cost?

Why are we all injecting shit into our faces?

I’ve been having lip filler for the past two years. I get 0.5ml every six months by a former dentist who now runs an aesthetics practice. She also does my Botox. She said she sees increasing numbers of women who come to her to have their filler dissolved due to botched jobs at the hands of other people.
I think the problem is when people go to places that are cheap and run by people with no prior medical experience. It is so easy to go on a quick course in dermal fillers and then declare yourself qualified. The sunbed shop near me has a woman operating out of one of the back rooms offering filler for £100 per ml - I wouldn’t touch that place with a barge pole but a lot of local girls go there and end up with the typical overdone ‘duck’ look. Often in these set ups they are using substandard products to save money - there needs to be more regulation.

@Iwasneveragoddess

YANBU ... I have full lips, and I love them - always have. Full lips that are full of filler don't usually look great IMO.

What worries me is that many of these women think they look great, and they look (for the most part,) like they have been in the boxing ring with Tyson Fury - like the brunette in pic 2.

Because as this thread shows, people are horrendously judgemental. All the time

I think unhappy and insecure people would do better to spend the money on finding a way to accept themselves as they are rather than subject their bodies to this.

LawnsLT · 22/12/2019 20:35

Op, have you heard the phrase - if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything!

I mean if having some lip filler gives someone more confidence then what harm is it doing to you? If someone is happy to pay money to make themselves feel nicer...

I know some people that have filler, and look lovely - it’s about personal choice!

Unusualusernames · 22/12/2019 20:36

God no you are not at all unreasonable. They look horrific. I had a client at work the other day and I just couldn't not focus on her lips. They look awful and I see them everywhere it's so sad. I also cannot stand those awful eyelash extensions. She had those as well.

Champagnetaste · 22/12/2019 20:36

I have lip fillers, get 1ml every 6 months or so. No one has ever noticed

AuntSpiker · 22/12/2019 20:38

I agree entirely, it is yet another way of extracting money by exploiting women's insecurities.

gypsywater · 22/12/2019 20:38

I fail to see how it is overly different from repeatedly bleaching one's hair rather than embracing the mousey or grey tones! Noone judges that. Or do they?!

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 22/12/2019 20:39

I dunno, I don't think you can attribute all women wanting fake eyebrows, lip fillers, hair extensions as "wanting to do it for the men".
Yeah, maybe some do, but we're not a hive mind - plenty of women will look and feel good that way for themselves too!
Whoever it's done for, it's personal choice anyway.

gypsywater · 22/12/2019 20:39

@MistyCloud the woman in the second picture likely has around 4ml in her lips...which is a lot. It's a specific look. Most women who have them go for 1ml tops.

BitOfFun · 22/12/2019 20:40

I don't think anybody here is criticising the young women themselves; rather, they are aiming their disapproval at the societal pressure which encourages people who are perfectly attractive as they are to have injections of dubious safety in order to conform to some pornified aesthetic.

I'm sure that women here will hotly dispute this, but I feel very sad that they are being sold a look which wipes out their unique beauty and individuality in favour of a cookie-cutter version of what is appealing.

While young women in particular are being distracted by the idea of scrutinising themselves and feeling substandard for having perfectly normal features, they aren't questioning what sort of commercial pressures are at play here, and how they are being manipulated.

Life is short enough without worrying about stuff which amounts to fuck all. If you have a spare two hundred quid every few weeks, spend it on travelling, or driving lessons for independence, or educating yourself- ANYTHING that will actually genuinely enrich your life.

gypsywater · 22/12/2019 20:43

@BitOfFun Genuinely curious, not having a dig, but do you not spend any money on beauty or hair stuff? Its possible you may pay more on your stuff than someone who gets lip fillers (e.g. I dont wear makeup and I dont get my hair coloured and I cut it myself whereas a lot of women spend on this)

Velveteenfruitbowl · 22/12/2019 20:44

This is just a natural extension of bad taste. First it was tanning beds, then it was balloon boob jobs, then Brazilians, then fake eye lashes, now this. This always happens. Fashionable and elegant people start to do something new well and then it’s picked up and bastardised by the masses. If it wasn’t lip fillers it would be something else. I don’t really understand what you expect. I also find your vitriol at posters who point out the fillers done well are great. I say this as someone who has no unnatural permanent enhancements (I barely ever shave or wear make up even, I don’t colour hair or wax etc etc I’m not even remotely biased here).

Deadringer · 22/12/2019 20:45

My DD and one of my friends have fillers in their lips. They both got the minimum and while their lips don't look much bigger, when they speak their lips don't move correctly. It's very weird and off putting when talking with them. And the big over plumped ones are ridiculous. People who think they are not noticable are deluding themselves.

KimMumsnet · 22/12/2019 20:46

Good evening, all.
We've had a couple of reports about this thread not being in the spirit of the site. While we get that cosmetic surgery is a topic for discussion, picking apart the appearance of specific individuals isn't really on.
Please try to post with that in mind.
Tis the season, and all that.

I’m with you OP. I think it’s so sad to see - like some freakish self-mutilation. But perhaps I am just too old fashioned. I also dislike caterpillar eyebrows, acrylic talons and hair extensions. I go for a natural look myself, 6-week trim and do own hair and makeup and nails. I am fairly certain some of my colleagues think I look frumpy and unglamorous and should make more effort. I guess it’s all very personal taste.

Freesunglasses · 22/12/2019 20:50

I watched the only way is Essex the other day. How depressing, they all looked liked Ken and Barbie. All of them!

I find it very sad that people can't be just happy with the way they look.

BitOfFun · 22/12/2019 20:51

Gypsywater, I really don't think I do. I perhaps spend about a tenner a month, on average. I bought a foundation for £7 this week, but I can't remember the last time I did.

I'm not suggesting that anyone should just give up caring about their appearance, but I'd really love it if young women would enjoy their own particular beauty and get on with giving less fucks about looking like everyone else.

Freesunglasses · 22/12/2019 20:52

@gypsywater you can cut or redye your hair you can't undo a pair of humongous lips.

Iwasneveragoddess · 22/12/2019 20:53

I am not advocating picking on individuals here either and don’t watch reality TV or follow any of them on Instagram, so don’t know who they are.

OP posts:
gypsywater · 22/12/2019 20:54

@Freesunglasses but you can...lip fillers are fully dissolvable? Bleach can wreck your hair for years...I should know...have previously done this and now no more dyeing ever! Grin

SmileyClare · 22/12/2019 20:55

If someone has (it) what harm is it doing to you?

It's possibly harming themselves though. I've no doubt that a lot of young people will bitterly regret having bits injected, tattooed and paralysed in years to come.
What would very inflated lips look like if you stopped filling them? I would imagine loose skin and creepy lines around the mouth where the skin has been stretched over a long period. Sad

But let's all say nothing negative on a discussion forum because it's " nasty and judgemental"? Would people honestly not have an opinion if their daughter was considering getting swollen vagina lips on her face in case it was judgemental?

thenightsky · 22/12/2019 20:57

Can it fix a resting bitch face?

(asking for a friend)

Grin
Freesunglasses · 22/12/2019 20:58

@gypsywater I didn't know they dissolved? So do your lips go back to normal?
I remember Leslie Ash having hers done and she got an absolute battering by the press. She wouldn't now.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 22/12/2019 20:58

I think they look awful, I'm yet to see anyone look better for having them. They inflate a part of the lip which isn't normally inflated, so even when it's done "subtly" it still looks weird.

If people want to have them, that's their lookout. But I detest the social media image that people feel they have to confirm to.
