To think that there are too many personal insults and attacks on Tory voters

I’m really sick of it now. I don’t log on here to be called a cunt, told I hate disabled people and want to ruin the NHS.

I’m interested as to whether others feel the same or if it is just me. If it’s just me, I think I’ll piss off.

I'm fascinated by the whole victimhood thing going on with the right wing. No one is celebrating brilliant campaigns by leave, Trump or even Boris or saying that they had good policies. What they are doing is saying well the other side were worse and its their fault we won.

Xenia · 26/12/2019 09:51

I am . The Tory policies are very good indeed. Lots of people read the Tory manifesto and voted on that basis. They did not vote Tory simply because they did not like Mr Corbyn.

Alsohuman · 26/12/2019 09:54

They did not vote Tory simply because they did not like Mr Corbyn

I think you’ll find they did. The manifesto was meagre and uncosted.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 26/12/2019 10:12

They did not vote Tory simply because they did not like Mr Corbyn.

For an awful lot of people it was just that. It was a choice between two shit sandwiches, one of them just happened to be made from artisanal bread.

echt · 26/12/2019 10:15

Not RTFT, OP but what would be the number of personal insults and attacks on Tory voters you would deem acceptable?

BertrandRussell · 26/12/2019 10:15

“ They did not vote Tory simply because they did not like Mr Corbyn.”
A lot did. And said so publicly. A lot of people on this forum said they were going do that very thing.

LemonTT · 26/12/2019 10:52

A lot of people voted Tory because they had a definitive position on Brexit. This was part of the swing in labour seats.

A lot of people voted Tory because their social policies were conservative. Working class people tend to be socially conservative on issues like immigration and law and order. As do older middle class people.

They will also have voted Tory because their fiscal policies were conservative. No tax changes or largesse public spending commitments.

A lot of people will have voted Tory because they have a clear view on defence and foreign policy.

For what it is worth I didn’t vote Tory because I don’t agree with their Brexit policy, social conservatism, fiscal approach or foreign policy. I didn’t vote labour because I don’t agree with theirs either. But I respect people who did. Whether because they did so believing it would be in the country’s best interests overall or even in the best interests of people like them. Because their voice and their vote matters.

Calling people cunts is vicious. It is dangerous if you do so because they express a different voice and opinion to yours whether it be from the left or the right.

It’s not the existence of different or even extreme views that are a danger to society and democracy, it’s the absence of consensus and compromise. It’s the absence of respect and debate. If you can’t listen, debate or compromise then you are the problem. No matter how much you think you are right.

malylis · 26/12/2019 10:53

A lot of people also voted Tory because of the of getting brexit done. It wasn't Corbyn in those Northern seats that brought the majority, they voted for him last time, it was brexit.

Lots of people read the manifesto? The one that they kept unpublished for as long as possible and was invested and vague?
You keep telling yourself that.

BertrandRussell · 26/12/2019 10:57

I wonder how many people actually read the Manifestos. I do- but I am a sad politics geek with too much time on my hands. I don’t know anyone else who does.

malylis · 26/12/2019 10:59

I genuinely doubt many Tory voters could go beyond "get brexit done" for a policy.

I mean the hospitals and nurses one is utterly discredited anyway (and one wonders what would have happened if Diane Abbot had done that maths).

otterturk · 26/12/2019 11:02

I voted Tory because of their policies on taxation and Brexit. Corby new Labour was too far left, too nasty (vocal supporters, antisemitism), too risky for the economy, too confused on Brexit.

I don't hate the NHS/disabled/immigrants, I'm just not on the far left.

malylis · 26/12/2019 11:07

So you weren't bothered by JRMs antisemitic comments or those of several tory candidates ?

Repeatedly saying Labour were far left is hyperbolic nonsense. The tax policies are similar to many other countries, is Germany far left? It had a higher rate of corporation tax than proposed and similar top rates of tax.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/12/2019 11:11

They did not vote Tory simply because they did not like Mr Corbyn

Canvassers I knew across different parts of the country and across 4/5 different political parties said that is exactly what they were meeting on the doorstep. At best he was neutral in parts of London and similar constituencies. Elsewhere whether North, East or West he was unpopular even with lifetime Labour voters.

People don't read manifestos. The woeful performances of the two or three faces unleashed for the Tory campaign who were called out on simply lying about numbers were not a problem when up against an opposition leader so unpopular on the doorstep.

BertrandRussell · 26/12/2019 11:12

“ I don't hate the NHS/disabled/immigrants, I'm just not on the far left.”
Neither was the Labour Party manifesto!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 26/12/2019 11:17

To the person upthread who said Labour voters have no intelligence.

The more educated you are the more likely you are to vote LabourConfused

The less education you have, the more you are likely to support Brexit.

C8H10N4O2 · 26/12/2019 11:17

Neither was the Labour Party manifesto!

No it wasn't but putting mass nationalisation into that campaign and free broadband for all, was probably the most mindnumbingly stupid idea so far. Even by Milne&Murphy inc that is quite an achievement.

They could have said much tighter regulation and controls prioritising better access and support for those who need it, less exporting of profits etc. Instead of which they believed their own KoolAid about the people loving St Jeremy and if they stick with this nonsense about the voters getting it wrong we will have ten years of further destruction of health and education instead of five.

@BertrandRussell the Labour manifesto was far left. Confiscation of assets, extending rights of private tenants to the point of being able to buy the property against the wishes of the actual owner?

otterturk · 26/12/2019 11:19

Not to mention mass nationalisation

derxa · 26/12/2019 11:19

The IFS said Corbyn would have been better for the country than almost any Brexit scenario. They cannot know that. Jeremy Corbyn is not a good leader no matter how people want to spin it.

Alsohuman · 26/12/2019 11:26

Confiscation of assets, extending rights of private tenants to the point of being able to buy the property against the wishes of the actual owner?

What confiscation of assets? Right to buy by private tenants wasn’t in the manifesto, it was only approved as a potential policy at the party conference. And renationalisation to remove the profit motive in basic services is an excellent idea.

noneedtoberudedear · 26/12/2019 11:27

YABU. Vote Tory and it means you’ve voted for a party that basically doesn’t care about anyone who is rich and the same as them. This government is bringing this country to it’s knees. Anyone who can look around, see the disgusting poverty in the UK today and still vote for them deserves everything they get.

noneedtoberudedear · 26/12/2019 11:27

Isn’t rich rather...

lowlandLucky · 26/12/2019 11:38

You have to laugh at the labour/libdem/green voters that take the moral high ground but abuse anyone who didnt vote the way they did.

snapcrap · 26/12/2019 11:39

I didn't vote Tory and never would as I am left leaning and concerned about the affect austerity has had on the most vulnerable members of UK society, but I think it's awful the amount of abuse Conservatives and Brexit voters have got.

It makes me wince every time I see it on here, other socia media, amongst my friends and family. Everywhere. My brother is a lovely, caring man and he voted Conservative. He's not a cunt, he gives to charity, he is the kind of person who would help anyone.

There is definitely a self-righteous, immovable, inflexible, holier-than-thou tone from many left wing voters in recent years.
