Omfg the reviews!

I've bought my tickets already, so I'm committed now, but jeez! It's such a treat for me to get to the cinema these days.

I'm keeping an open mind anyway, but I haven't heard so many bad reviews of a film in bloody ages. Typical, that it's the one I'm going to see!

youdeservebetter · 21/12/2019 08:55

Watched it last night -5 of us
2 of us really enjoyed it
2 quite enjoyed
1 fell asleep !

Emmapeeler1 · 21/12/2019 08:57

The reviewers didn’t like Bohemian Rhapsody which was a huge success! I am planning to see it when I can.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 21/12/2019 08:58

The reviews are making me want to see it even more tbh, I'm fascinated to see if it can really be THAT bad! I love a musical and don't mind cheesy and unrealistic so I might love it Grin

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 08:59

Thanks! Which were you? I'd take "quite enjoy" definitely.

I suppose the film isn't the only thing. It's the whole event.

I was going today with a 5yr old and 11 yr old!
youdeserve - do you think it’s ok for a 5yr old? I know it’s a U.

ineedaholidaynow · 21/12/2019 08:59

A group of us are planning to see it tomorrow. I am channeling the thought that the critics hated The Greatest Showman too, which I loved.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 08:59

Xmas Grin ,English. I know what you mean. I also love musicals Xmas Blush.

OP posts:
MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 21/12/2019 09:00

I still want to see it, probably to see if it is as bad as the reviews! But I quite like a cheesy film so may actually enjoy it 😂

RedRec · 21/12/2019 09:00

I would still go, for a laugh.
Have you read Peter Bradshaw's review in the Guardian? "Cats review – a purr-fectly dreadful hairball of woe", all done in Cats style rhyme and rhythm. Genius.

Lockheart · 21/12/2019 09:01

If you want to see it then do, why on earth would that make you unreasonable?

It's not unreasonable to go to the cinema and watch a film.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:02

Oh did they hate The Greatest Showman? Great, everyone seems to love that. That's reassuring.

TwoMuch, I think the cats are meant to look a bit creepy, because they're half human, half cat. Watch the trailers. I honestly don't think they look that bad at all and don't think a young child would pick up on it like an adult would. Obviously I haven't seen it though. Also, it is a U, as you say. Is your 5 yo easily scared by movies? I know some are, but some aren't.

OP posts:
BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:05

Haven't read it the whole way through redrec, it hurts too much Xmas Wink.

lock, I agree, but omg the reviews, from so many people, just saying DO NOT WATCH. You'll never get those two hours back etc. Ah well. I suppose that does make me a bit curious.

BarkandCheese · 21/12/2019 09:06

I’m taking DD and a friend to see it on Monday, I’m quite looking forward to it but I’m a musicals fan and I know if nothing else I’ll enjoy the songs. Cats holds a special place in my heart, it first came out when I was ten, I got the album for Christmas that year and played it to death.

@TwoMuchTwoYoung

This lot say 10+, but I've definitely watched movies with my 4yo which on there are supposed to be EVIL MOVIES AND YOU WILL BREAK YOUR CHILD IF YOU LET THEM SNIFF THE DVD BOX. So I would take with a pinch of salt personally. It does have some good things to say about it as a movie for kids. Yay! A positive review!

OP posts:
BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:17

One of the reviews says "people, dressing up as cats? some will find this a little disturbing". I don't really find that disturbing. Am I broken Xmas Confused? God, I'll report back after I've seen it. Maybe I will faint at the sight of Taylor Swift with a tail.

I read a review that said if you treat it as a ballet with songs then it’s really good. The main person (Frances Hayward?) is a phenomenal ballerina and there are also 2 amazing dancers that Beyoncé uses in it.
If you are expecting a musical in the same vein as The Greatest Showman then I think you’ll be disappointed - it’s far more ‘artsy’ than that.
That’s the gist I got !

Ellybellyboo · 21/12/2019 09:21

My daughter saw it yesterday with her friends

All 4 said it was really boring

She’ll watch any old shite - recently watched Santa Paws 3 times in one day - and even she said it was rubbish.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:21

That's sort of what I got from the trailer. It's a bit artsy. I'm really surprised it hasn't gone down well with critics though, as thought they'd love that sort of thing...

I also agree that it can't be all bad if that dancer does some dancing in it! I mean, she's meant to be alright at it Xmas Wink.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 21/12/2019 09:24

Haha we booked tickets to see it today because of the reviews. My curiosity was piqued!

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:26

Report back please lisa! I wonder if quite a few people will do similar... It might become a bit of a cult movie.

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 21/12/2019 09:27

I didn’t get the problem with the first trailer, which had to be changed after it was criticised so much. I thought it looked really good, maybe I have low standards Grin

ForalltheSaints · 21/12/2019 09:39

If you like musicals then why not? If it is really bad then you can use your views in conversations with others.

There is not violence or sex scenes and no animals were harmed, and there will be far worse on tv over Christmas probably.

AppleKatie · 21/12/2019 09:47

Tbh I love a musical but have always felt Cats was disappointingly shit. The trailer looks absolutely terrible so I’m inclined to agree with the critics. I’m just Shock at all the big names in it, how did they ALL get caught up in a flop? That bit is fascinating.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:48

I'm definitely keeping an open mind and I wouldn't be surprised if I love it.

@TwoMuchTwoYoung

Found this as well which goes into lots of detail about what might be a bit scary or inappropriate for your dc (CONTAINS SPOILERS obviously). So, if you're worried, read through and it might help you decide. I can't see anything there which my 4yo would be scared of, but she's quite robust. Also, I suppose a lot of it depends on how it's done, which I wouldn't know till I'd seen it... It is a U though, so...

I sympathise btw as I always worry about movies with children and wouldn't let mine watch anything they weren't in the age range for. Slightly scarred by my late mum, who never watched movies and was therefore clueless about them, letting me watch It and Nightmare on Elm Street when I was 7 or 8. Ffs. She just had no idea though, bless her. Thought the scariest thing on tv was Doctor Who!

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:49

I've never seen Cats the show either and always wondered what on earth the storyline is. Apparently the movie does try to clarify it a bit.
