Omfg the reviews!

I've bought my tickets already, so I'm committed now, but jeez! It's such a treat for me to get to the cinema these days.

I'm keeping an open mind anyway, but I haven't heard so many bad reviews of a film in bloody ages. Typical, that it's the one I'm going to see!

Yes, please confirm if Rum Tum Tugger is a rap cat! Ugh.

Also the new stage show had messed around with Mungojerry and Rumpleteazer. I assume the film has kept to the new version rather than the old.

I’ve been coerced into going to see it and I want to be prepared...

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 16:34

Will do worriedteacher! I'm going to see it tomorrow morning, so will report back in the PM.

Sorry for late reply been running around all day doing last minute Xmas stuff.

DP is very glad to realise he's not the only one who didn't like the change in Rum Tum Tugger lol.

Thanks for offering to report back, I appreciate it as otherwise we'd be waiting for it to appear on TV to find out

Serin · 21/12/2019 16:49

DH and I said we might go whilst eating dinner last night.
Our 17yr old DS was horrified and said "OMG, is that the pervert film for furries?"
Xmas Grin

PaquitaVariation · 21/12/2019 16:58

We saw it last night and all loved it, even DS15. If you like the stage version then there’s nothing not to like about the movie. The dancing is fabulous, which is mainly what we went for. People seem shocked that it’s actors acting like cats, but that’s literally what it’s supposed to be. 🤷🏼‍♀️

dottypotter · 21/12/2019 16:59

its on sky arts!!! The stage version.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 17:07

Serin omfg, your ds is right; that's why people are creeped out by it 😂😂😂! I had forgotten about furries. That is definitely why people find it "too sexy". Ah ffs, just because a handful of people have that fetish. It's a brave new world I guess!

I went to see it this morning with my 8 year old DD. Loved it. Was a bit weird till you get into it. A PP above described it as a ballet with songs. That's it really. Lovely dancing, white cat is a wonderful ballerina. All the songs (that i now can't stop singing). Tap dancing cat was great. Rebel Wilson and James Corden brought some humour. I love musicals and I loved it. Smile

bengalcat · 21/12/2019 17:10

Saw it today - liked it . Loved the ears and tails moving . No pet play except Ian McKellen lapping out of a bowl .

JigsawsAreInPieces · 21/12/2019 17:16

I'm planning on seeing it again Crown Grin It's not many films that make me want to watch them again immediately but this one does! Crown Grin

BinkyBaa · 21/12/2019 17:16

I can see why the reviewers don't like it. I've only seen the trailer so far but the cgi 'costumes' are a bit jarring and I cant see the structure of the original musical lending itself well to film.

That said, I might still go see it. A terrible film can still be fun to watch. Someone mentioned reviewers not liking bohemian rhapsody much either, which was fair considering the film didnt have much plot and was largely HD recreations of queen shows that are all available on youtube. But again, I still liked watching it. Reviewer scores often go into more depth and scrutinise the film far more than the audience will. Granted, I have no idea what the audience score is for cats.

Alarae · 21/12/2019 17:27

@Lima45 I've just listened to the new Rum Tum Tugger as it's on Spotify.

It's not the rap cat anymore but... It's hideous. They've kept the same beat but made it more poppy with trumpets? Almost like a happy Bruno Mars song? Plus Jason Derulo has absolutely none of the sexy growl/allure in the song that was in the original stage version.

Should have remained oblivious as its tried to go back to its roots and actually made it worse. Not sure what wins the prize for worst version- Jason Derulo or the rap cat Confused

Amanduh · 21/12/2019 17:31

It’s great! Absolutely mad and bonkers, but Cats is anyway. Not really sure what else people expected from humanoid living talking walking dancing cats really... human actors behaving as cats...that’s the point..? Anyway, good fun!

PorpentinaScamander · 21/12/2019 18:09

We saw it last night. A group of 5, Male and female ages 13-69
We all loved it. I laughed. I cried.

The CGI is a bit odd in places.
Francesca Haywood is a beautiful beautiful dancer, although my brain was struggling with her feet being CGI so it didn't look like she had pointe shoes on. Steven McRae is also an amazing dancer. And Skimbleshanks is one of my favourite cats anyway.
McCavity was brilliant.

James Corden and Rebel Wilson had the whole theatre laughing

Ok so bits were not so good. But overall we loved it.

PorpentinaScamander · 21/12/2019 18:10

Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift were the worst parts imo
They both tried, and failed to be sexy Confused

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 18:11

I'm going to see it tomorrow morning, so will report back in the PM.

What am I on about? I'm going on MONDAY morning, which is not tomorrow Xmas Blush. Forgot what day of the week it was today! And we're only on day one of school holidays Xmas Confused.

Glad to see not everyone who has seen it hates it. Bonkers is precisely what I would expect from it.

@Alarae
Thank you so much. Sounds like a miss from us then! Well just continue watching the dvd if the stage production. John Partridge knows how to do the character right lol

WLmum · 21/12/2019 18:18

I quite liked it. Dds aged 7 and 9 liked it, 12yo said it was ok. It's not a masterpiece but quite lightly entertaining.

emmetgirl · 21/12/2019 18:20

Well the worst thing that can happen is you don't like it!

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 21/12/2019 18:51

I’m back.

I hated it so much.

I was quite looking forward to the weirdness and the nightmare fuel but sadly it was just BORING AS FUCK Sad

june2007 · 21/12/2019 18:59

It is based on the poems by TS Elliot, and the story is a lose thing to tie the poems together. Love the songs though. (Not seen the show or film.)

Kizziebel · 21/12/2019 19:05

I went yesterday and loved it! The CGI is awesome. Francesca Haywood was wonderful, could take or leave Jason and Taylor.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 19:13

Ah boo, sorry lisa. I know you were hoping it would be truly heinous Xmas Grin.

Ah well. I'll have to judge for myself on Monday. I'd like to see the dancing, so maybe that'll keep me entertained, in the absence of any plot or...erm...entertainment!

OP posts:
BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 19:14

It does seem like some people lived it though, so, who knows?

OP posts:
lisasimpsonssaxophone · 21/12/2019 20:59

The dancing is very good, I’ll give it that. And Francesca Hayward is very impressive and somehow manages to play the whole thing with a grace and dignity that really shouldn’t be possible in a movie that shows Rebel Wilson scratching her cat-crotch.

Hope you enjoy it more than I did!
