Omfg the reviews!

I've bought my tickets already, so I'm committed now, but jeez! It's such a treat for me to get to the cinema these days.

I'm keeping an open mind anyway, but I haven't heard so many bad reviews of a film in bloody ages. Typical, that it's the one I'm going to see!

I watched it last night with my 9 year old. The last film that I fell asleep watching was The Spice girls movie. My 9year old loved the music but got bored and so did I. I found it strangely, unnerving, the humans as cats just did not work. Very odd. Just buy the CD.

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 21/12/2019 09:50

Thanks Bells we'll give it a go.
I want to take everyone out to the cinema and for food as a pre Xmas treat but the only other thing we could all watch is Frozen2 and the 11yr old is refusing Smile

I think the problem might be it falls between two stools, it’s two artsy for people who want musicals like Greatest Showman or Mamma Mia, but for the critics, who have always been a bit sniffy about ALW anyway, it’s too glossy, cgi and not authentically artsy enough.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:53

And that^^ is the link which CONTAINS SPOILERS

Not that anyone wants to watch it...except to see how bad it is Xmas Grin.

BarkandCheese · 21/12/2019 09:53

Too not two.

Ballstothisdotcom · 21/12/2019 09:54

It’s absolutely bizarre. I can’t even work out if it was good or not. But I’ve been singing fucking memories for about 12 hours now with no let up.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:54

it falls between two stools

Was that deliberately 😂😂😂😂? It's so shit it falls between two stools.

Yes, I will bear that in mind about it being not quite a musical and not quite artsy enough when I watch it. I bet I'll be the only person who loves it.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:56

ballstothis, Jennifer Hudson has such a lovely voice imo. People were slagging her off for warbling which I really think is a bit much. But again, wait till I've seen it I guess...

BarkandCheese · 21/12/2019 09:57

Ha, no, I can’t spell!

It’s never really had a plot, it’s just the poems set to music.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 21/12/2019 09:57

The songs do stick with you. It's worth seeing, I saw it last night and really enjoyed it. Xmas Grin

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 09:59

I can't spell

Neither can I apparently "was that DELIBERATE" not "was the deliberately" Xmas Confused.

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 10:00

Yay jigsaws, we can start our own club if I love it too.

MongerTruffle · 21/12/2019 10:00

Film critics judge things that the average person would never notice.

Lima45 · 21/12/2019 10:05

Cats is DPs favourite musical. (god only knows why!)
Can anyone confirm if rum tum tugger is a rockstar cat or a rap cat in this version.

We've seen the stage show twice. Walked out at interval the second time because they changed rum tum tugger and DP said it wasn't the same. 🤦‍♀️

On that note I'm probably going to wait for the dvd/TV premiere as I'm not overly fussed about cats. But I am interested in what direction they went with RTT

Alarae · 21/12/2019 10:06

I love Cats; I was very disappointed when I was around 6(?) and it disappeared from London, as my grandma promised me she would take me. She had the recorded version on video and I loved watching it.

Then it came back to London and I went to see it. The majority was great but couldn't forgive ALW for making Rum Tum Tugger a rapper cat. Ew.

Then this film trailer came out. I was genuinely horrified. The CGI looks horrible and the part with Taylor Swift shaking her furry boobs... Its a no from me.

I will point out that anyone rather attached to stories in films will be disappointed as Cats largely doesn't have one. The overall theme is that a chosen jellicle cat will be reborn into a new life by Old Deuteoronmy (spelt horrible wrong- Judi Dench) which is a massive event. All the other songs are a bit random, telling snippets of particular cat stories and one about warring dogs.

Some people mention that they've tried to actually carve out a story but I'm genuinely wondering how without completely changing the tone of Cats itself.

So.. Not a fan. From a fan of Cats Wink

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 10:18

alarae, are you lima's DP??

Hmmm I actually haven't seen the show, which might be a good thing... I will report back on the Rum Tum Tugger rapper / rockstar issue if nobody else does.

Haha, can confirm I'm not as my DH is currently outside trying to sell a car!

He also would definitely not accompany me to see the stage show. I only just about managed to convince him to go to Aladdin (and that was a let down!).

BellsAJingleTheRoastedChestnut · 21/12/2019 10:36

my DH is currently outside trying to sell a car!

Or so he says...secret MNetter Xmas Wink.

I made my DH see Blood Brothers. I assured him it wasn't a musical, because I genuinely thought it wasn't Xmas Blush. The giveaway should've been that there was a Nolan sister in it Xmas Grin.

I also made him watch Waiting for Godot with the most amazing cast. He seemed to 'get' it more than I did, despite me being Irish and having done a module in existentialism at uni. I was just there to see Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart Xmas Wink. I don't think I really got what was going on... Xmas Blush. But maybe that's the point with S. Beckett.

I've not watched any of them and when I saw the trailer at our local cinema I got really excited but can't get anyone to go with me

Catapillarsruletheworld · 21/12/2019 11:27

I watched it last night with dd1 (almost 15), her friend, and my best friend.

We all loved it. There are some slightly odd moments (rebel Wilson and the cockroaches), but on the whole I thought it was beautifully done. The sound track is amazing and jhud as grizabella was outstanding.

Definitely worth a watch.

youdeservebetter · 21/12/2019 12:24

OP I put myself in the camp of really enjoying it - it's quite artsy / quite funky but it's something different to the ususal hollywood blockbusters and I found that refreshing.

AllergicToAMop · 21/12/2019 12:38

I can't get over the CGI. I don't know why!Blush They send shivers down my spine for some reason...
I love the musical and enjoyed live performance, but I don't think I can go and see this...

Southwest12 · 21/12/2019 12:49

I saw it last night and loved it. It is slightly different to the stage version, they've added more of a story, and taken out chunks of the show. Some of the lyrics are slightly different and bits missing.

I don't think they look any more weird than they did in the stage version, although the tails are a bit ott.

I worked front of house on it in London about 25 years ago and was at the last night party when it closed, which was epic as ALW knows how to throw a party!
