‘Dress however you please.
Call yourself whatever you like.
Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you.
Live your best life in peace and security.
But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real?

@mauvaisereputation may I ask where Maya breached the equality act 2010? Genuine question. As I understood it there were 9 protected characteristics - sex and gender reassignment (as opposed to gender identity and as defined by the GRA 2004). Saying you don't believe in gender identity isn't covered, unless I have misunderstood something...?

lazylinguist · 20/12/2019 09:54

YANBU. It's great that people as sane and well-known as JKR are bringing this out of the woke Twitter bubble and to the attention of the general population (most of whom will probably be astonished and baffled at the idea that anyone could possibly think biological sex doesn't exist).

Hoppinggreen · 20/12/2019 09:55

If mauvaise is correct then I agree with the judgement. An internal work system is not the place to air views like this (either way)
I too believe in biology and that it’s impossible to change sex and I will happily express those views in person and on SM but I wouldn’t on a work intranet

BentNeckLady · 20/12/2019 09:55

I agree with her.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 20/12/2019 09:56

I agree too.

I liked having rights to privacy, dignity and body autonomy. It was unfair that those have been removed from me by stealth, and I want to keep those rights.

I really don't understand why that is controversial.

mammmamia · 20/12/2019 09:58

I agree with JK

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/12/2019 09:58

#IStandwithMaya, too. YANBU.

StealthMama · 20/12/2019 09:58

I would love to publicly make my beliefs clear on this and stand with Maya, except I genuinely know I'd be fired too. At some point we all need to find the courage to be un-stealth.

littlbrowndog · 20/12/2019 09:59

#thisisnotadrill

I stand with Maya

terfsandwich · 20/12/2019 09:59

Maya did not express these views to a trans colleague. This is incorrect. I wonder where you heard this from? Not from Maya, not from the court proceedings.
She did have a twitter discussion regarding Gregory Murray, the trans bearded Scottish politician who was recently forced to step down for calling women he didn't like cunts.

HipTightOnions · 20/12/2019 10:01

If mauvaise is correct
Mauvaise is not correct.

Love51 · 20/12/2019 10:01

Im confused about this. You can change your gender (name, clothes, genetalia via surgery, physical presentation by hormones, surgery etc). You cannot change your sex. I honestly thought this was fact, not opinion. Is it not?

Surely that is miles away from saying people of one ethnicity are better than another. Surely it's more like saying people from certain ethnicities are more prone to certain conditions than others (eg sickle cell anaemia). Saying that you can't change sex isn't a value judgement like saying "white people are better than black people" would be.

On the other hand, I'm not clear about what maya did, barracking on about gender Vs sex on work time when you are meant to be doing a job, especially if it makes colleagues upset doesn't endear people to their managers at contract renewal time.

Gardai · 20/12/2019 10:02

I like JK and fair fucks to her ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JacobReesClunge · 20/12/2019 10:03

Yes, can we have a link to where the info about conversation with a trans colleague came from?

ChristmasSweet · 20/12/2019 10:04

Yes it's great that we are removing the rights of a majority to suit the minority. Hmm

One does not outweigh the other. You can dress how you want, change your name etc. But you aren't biologically a woman or a man just because of that. Taking offence to that is ridiculous and if that's your biggest worry in life, you're leading a privileged life to be honest.

Fight against actual discrimination. Against the people who are homophobic, who actually believe that gays/lesbians/transgenders deserve to die. They still exist in today's world! Can totally understand the issue with people like that, they are vile. But getting someone fired for this? That's stupid.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 20/12/2019 10:04

Yep, I agree too.

mauvaisereputation · 20/12/2019 10:05

drive.google.com/file/d/12P9zf82TicPs2cCxlTnm0TrNFDD8Gaz5/view Just skilled the judgment. She made the remarks about two individuals outside her workplace on twitter (in a context that invoked her work) and on her workplace slack. The "philosophical belief" argument failed on the basis of a case called Grainger plc v Nicholson [2010] ICR 360, which held that in order to qualify, the belief must not conflict with others' rights. The judge identified rights that were violated by the particular views held by Forstater; in particular Gender Recognition Certificate confer the legal right to be considered the gender stated and the ECHR grants protection from sexual discrimination.

Tbh it seems a reasonable judgment to me.

The judge makes explicit that campaigning for the exclusion fo transwomen from some female spaces or against allowing GRCs to be granted on the basis of self-identification are not inherently problematic.

thepeopleversuswork · 20/12/2019 10:05

I think she's totally right on the fundamental point about nobody being able to change sex.

But I'm vaguely troubled by what I've read about this woman's behaviour towards this person. It does seem that Maya had a bit of a campaign against her and I think her employer had a duty to deal with it internally.

Difficult one: I think JK Rowling is absolutely right on the principle but I wouldn't have chosen this example.

HeresMe · 20/12/2019 10:07

I direct you to Rachel McKinnon who is completely disrepecting the world of sport with the trans agenda and anyone who speaks out is ostracized.

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2019 10:07

Hollow laugh @Love51

Have you been on Twitter? You would be figuratively torn to pieces (and threatened with literal tearing - and worse) if you expressed that view on there.

JanesKettle · 20/12/2019 10:08

Of course YANBU.

The people currently being unreasonable are those talking about burning Harry Potter books. Book burners are never on the right side of history.

The people currently being unreasonable are those spreading fake news - that J.K.R. wants trans kids to die, or that Maya was sacked for behaviour at work. J.K.R wants trans kids to live a peaceful and secure life, and Maya's contract was not renewed because a man who considers himself to be non-binary threw a hissy fit over her (non-work) social media.

I don't know how progressivism (I consider myself a progressive) became so authoritarian, or so susceptible to fake news. I can only think that the Flynn Effect is rapidly reversing.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/12/2019 10:09

#IStandWithMaya (and JK!)

She did have a twitter discussion regarding Gregory Murray, the trans bearded Scottish politician who was recently forced to step down for calling women he didn't like cunts.

This is Gregor Murray, by the way. Tell me, hand on heart, that any one of you would see him in the street and think "oh there goes a woman" (or even transwoman)?

This is the person who goes round aggressively calling women cunts for not instantly kowtowing to his internal womanly feelings.

(Interestingly Gregor doesn't seem to bother having a go at men)

To agree with JK Rowling?
bluebells1 · 20/12/2019 10:09

We need more powerful women speaking up about this. Well done, and Thank You JKR!

ForTheTimeBeing · 20/12/2019 10:10

I agree with her, of course I do.

JanesKettle · 20/12/2019 10:10

I mean, compare this tweet, which I just saw:

terfs are so fucking stupid fuckin dumbass

with J.K.R's tweet. Pretty clear to see who's being unreasonable here.
