Loved it with sweet chilli sauce until dairy intolerance diagnosis. But I have found a vegan alternative which melts and tastes almost exactly the same! It's mouse's favourite vegan camembert .

BarkandCheese · 16/12/2019 13:40

It something DH and I have for an easy dinner if it’s just the two of us. We have it with one of those packs of Mixed sliced continental meats, olives and crusty bread. Wrap an olive or a piece of bread in salami or ham and dip in cheese.

theweebleshavelanded · 16/12/2019 14:03

so can I just bake it plain. ds is very fussy. he likes melted chedder/ pizza cheese?

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 14:06

Yes you can do it plain and it’ll just be lots of yummy melty cheese. If he likes cheese on pizza he’ll probably really like it.

Saddler · 16/12/2019 14:06

Yes, superb

theweebleshavelanded · 16/12/2019 14:14

oooooh we`ll get one then! easy xmas day tea! part baked baguette....lardons (we love those anyway!) and things!

stupid question, fork for dipping bits of gammon ham/ olives? taking it to centerparcs

theweebleshavelanded · 16/12/2019 14:18

mmm looking at tesco baking camenbert (on home delivery). it says bake for 30 mins. is it just till its melted then?

theweebleshavelanded · 16/12/2019 14:19

does it have to be "baking camenbert"?

slothbyday · 16/12/2019 14:24

We have 2 for a family of 5 and lots of dip options (bread, chicken satay kebabs, pigs in blanket, mix of cooked meats etc). There invariably isn't much left!

DontCallMeShitley · 16/12/2019 14:32

A whole one makes a good main course for one person, especially if you are eating out in a place that has crappy vegetarian choices.

I found the Lidl ones don't work, but they don't seem very nice anyway, or ripen nicely.

To the PP who said they stink like old socks, maybe try washing your feet sometimes?

KatharinaRosalie · 16/12/2019 14:38

Most regular French camemberts work just fine, I haven't even seen a special baking one in France. Just don't get any low fat or otherwise messed up one.

OneHanded · 16/12/2019 14:42

Prevegan I’d eat a whole big one to myself 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 my mother would just get one for four or five people as part of a spread though

HariboLecter · 16/12/2019 15:31

@theweebleshavelanded

Make sure you buy a camembert made from unpasteurised milk, for the best results. Often called Baking Camembert, but read the labels if you can't find a "Baking" cheese.

diddl · 16/12/2019 15:35

Does it taste the same as the camembert that you can get in breadcrumbs to bake?

I really like those.

I've had Rougette Ofenkäse, but that had an aftertaste that didn't like & it has put me off trying a camembert even though I like the ones in breadcrumbsBlush

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/12/2019 15:47

Yes Diddl, it pretty much tastes like the breadcrumbed ones, except better.

UndertheCedartree · 16/12/2019 15:56

I'm doing one for us on Christmas eve with soup, baguette and cranberry sauce.

Snuffkindle · 16/12/2019 16:00

Tell you what's nice with it - Sainsburys bakery cranberry orange & pumpkin seed loaf, cut into soldiers to dip in. The fruitiness and the cheese is just yum.

TheSeaWitch · 16/12/2019 16:10

@HippyChickMama Thank you!! You have made this cheese loving pregnant lady very happy!

Smelly50 · 16/12/2019 16:12

Yes yes snuffkindle . I like it with plum bread/ christmas cake .

Archaea · 16/12/2019 16:18

We bought one of these and I can recommend if you bake it regularly- keeps it nice and warm when serving www.amazon.co.uk/BIA-Camembert-Baker-Cover-Green/dp/B008KJWUTC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=camembert+baker&sprefix=camem&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1576512981&sr=8-3

ClientListQueen · 16/12/2019 16:21

Just added the Sainsbury's one to my shop for my Christmas Eve meal alone

diddl · 16/12/2019 16:21

"Yes Diddl, it pretty much tastes like the breadcrumbed ones, except better."

Ooh thank you!

Any in particular that you would recommend?

YouJustDoYou · 16/12/2019 17:42

I eat one a week as my treat. I drizzle Olive oil over it and put a ton of garlic in it. Some are good for baking, some will just congeal. Supposedly it's unpasteurized camembert that is the baking kind.

YouJustDoYou · 16/12/2019 17:43

I found the Lidl ones don't work, but they don't seem very nice anyway, or ripen nicely

Same here. They just congeal. Aldi do an amazing 99p "perfect for baking" camembert.

cushioncovers · 16/12/2019 18:00

If you know your family love it then I would get 2 maybe 3 but not one each.
