Yes having it for supper tonight, with chutney, crusty bread and salad.

Overdueanamechange · 16/12/2019 11:46

I've seen an idea where you wrap the cheese in pastry with onion chutney sandwiched, then bake and serve immediately with lots of chunky bread and veg sticks to dip. Yum!!

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 16/12/2019 11:49

What do you put it in to cook it?

NellNorth · 16/12/2019 11:50

Sainsbury’s are doing one that is surrounded by a wreath of crusty bread- bake the whole thing for 15 mins- Devine!!!

Bigtelevision · 16/12/2019 11:51

I used to just wrap in foil but last year I treated myself to a proper Camembert Baker. As dh doesn’t like it, I cut the Camembert into 2, pop one half in the baker and cook for 10 minutes. Has a lovely crust.

NellNorth · 16/12/2019 11:51

Normally, you unwrap the cheese, pop it back in it’s timber box, and bake it in that.

Clymene · 16/12/2019 11:52

Put it back in its wooden box @Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze

Or if you're a wanker like me, you have a special thing for cooking them in Grin

ShadowStar · 16/12/2019 11:52

I love these, they’re one of my favourite foods with lots of good crusty bread.

How many you need will depend on how big they are and how keen people are on cheese, but generally they’re intended as sharing things.

Annasgirl · 16/12/2019 11:55

You don't need one each!!! 2-3 depending on how old your DC are. But lots and lots of baked bread. Also, I have cranberry sauce and onion relish on the side for people to dip into. The best is to have red berry sauce or Cumberland sauce if you can get it.

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 11:59

Oh I need this now.

DanaPhoenix · 16/12/2019 12:01

Baked Camembert is delicious.

Came across this festive recipe the other day... cut off the top and hollow out a cob loaf, coat inside with cranberry sauce, pop in the Camembert and bake until melted and bread crisp. Garnish with fresh thyme.

LuckyKitty13 · 16/12/2019 12:02

If you cook it too long it goes hard again, so watch closely!!!

Comps83 · 16/12/2019 12:03

Just don’t buy it from Aldi or Lidl as they don’t melt!

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 12:03

Yes! Don’t cook it too long/too hot as it messes it up.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 16/12/2019 12:04

It depends on how you’re serving it - if it’s just ‘grab some bread and dip in’, you won’t need individual ones. I cooked a big one from Waitrose yesterday for a brunch; there were five of us and it didn’t all get eaten.

mamansnet · 16/12/2019 12:04

DH is French and does a camembert each (unless they're the giant ones) and adds fried lardons, shallots and herbs.

Mouth watering just thinking about it.

TheTrollFairy · 16/12/2019 12:04

I would say 2 for 5 of you is a good amount.
Don’t forget the dipping bread Grin

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 12:05

@DanaPhoenix I’ve seen that, and I’ve just decided that’s what we’re going to have for lunch on Christmas Day (it’s just me and my OH so we’re having steak for dinner). Perfect!

StillCoughingandLaughing · 16/12/2019 12:05

Also, put it on a big plate for when you cut it out - the cheese oozes out like the magic porridge pot and goes all over your worktop if you use a small plate Blush

HariboLecter · 16/12/2019 12:09

@Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze we bought one a few Christmases ago that came in a ceramic dish to bake it in

I want camembert for tea tonight now. Grin

MikeUniformMike · 16/12/2019 12:11

I've often seen it on menus and thought it sounded revolting.

GabsAlot · 16/12/2019 12:15

either one big one or small indivdiuals

DanaPhoenix · 16/12/2019 12:16

ninkanink yes simple but a little fancy, we're travelling Xmas day and have been invited to drop into friends (close like family) for lunch, thinking of bringing this and a roast vegetable salad and wine. Very casual this year the joys of teenagers.

paranoidmum2 · 16/12/2019 12:19

Make sure you add some grooves to the cheese with a knife to make it gooey inside.

For the bread, get some ciabatta loaves (usually two in pack), slice them nearly to the bottom (like garlic bread), stuff cloves of garlic in them and drizzle with olive oil.

I had deep fried breadcrumbed Camembert. OMG it was so good I Camembert it.

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 12:19

Yes mine are grown up now and the chilled out Christmases are awesome! Your idea for the casual feast sounds perfect! Xmas Smile
