The long number on the front of the card is different apart from the first five numbers with no explanation as to why.

Im assuming it can still be used as chip and pin and to withdraw money from the ATM as well.

Does not say anything to confirm this in the info leaflet provided. Having read a thread from last year im not too sure i would be happy with contactless.

Why not?

TheTrollFairy · 15/12/2019 16:22

Does it have a chip on it? If so it can still be used in the chip and pin.

@SmileEachDay apparently the contactless can still be used even after a card is deactivated (eg reporting it lost or stolen)

Oysterbabe · 15/12/2019 16:22

Why wouldn't you want contactless?

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:22

Because its my bank account and my choice.

OP posts:
Mickhasnotorso · 15/12/2019 16:23

It can't have the same number if it's a new card, because then it would be the same card...

What is it about contactless that you don't like?

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/12/2019 16:24

What do the numbers have to do with anything?

Contactless cards can be used for everything else too, like making a chip and pin payment and withdrawing money.
You know it’s contactless if it has a logo on it a bit like a fan.

Don’t be taken in by all the horror stories of people strolling around with contactless readers and taking your money. Just think, do you know anyone personally this has happened to? Not a friend of a friend but someone first hand.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:25

According to a thread on here from others who have used it its also harder to keep track of your money as it doesnt show up in your account for a while.

Pinkblueberry · 15/12/2019 16:26

Meh. Most people like having contactless. If you for no other reason than ‘it’s my bank account and my choice’ prefer not to I think it’s fair that you go in, opt out, and get yourself another one.

I use online banking and it shows up immediately on my account.

KrampusTime · 15/12/2019 16:28

What?

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:28

i dont bank online.

I think that the numbers always change with a new card. Not sure you can do much about contactless if that's how they issue them. Sure people said the same things about chip and pin vs signature at the time. If you're not part of the steamroller, you're part of the road...

snowybaubles · 15/12/2019 16:29

Go to your bank and ask for a passbook Hmm

DoneAdulting · 15/12/2019 16:29

I work in a bank.

All cards from the same issuer have the same 5 numbers on the PAN.

Since contactless was launched I have dealt with precisely zero fraudulent transactions.

IF any contactless transactions were put through after the card was withdrawn, the bank would refund them immediately. Though as I say, I've never known of this happening.

Contactless cards are the default now, if you want non-contactless you have to manually let the bank know to opt you out.

IMO there is no reason to not have a contactless card, they are much more convenient than chip and pin.

The only folk who don't want contactless also refuse to do internet banking, and complain about branches closing. Really, they are just making life more inconvenient for themselves.

cherryblossomgin · 15/12/2019 16:29

The first 4/5 numbers are always the same but the rest usually change. If you don't want contact less tell the bank.

WhiteVixen · 15/12/2019 16:30

Just because it has contactless functionality, doesn’t mean you have to use it. Just do chip and pin like before.

I’d think they just make cards contactless as standard now, I’d be surprised if you can get a non-contactless card.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:31

snowy dont be facetious. Im happy with chip and pin or paying in cash. Just dont like the idea of contactless. IMO this should be opt in not opt out.

Would be helpful if you linked the thread you read last year or outline what you are worried about so people here can try and help put your mind at rest or, maybe even better, call your bank and ask them.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/12/2019 16:32

It depends on what you mean by ‘a while’. It’s usually there within a hour or so during the week.

WhiteVixen · 15/12/2019 16:32

And yes, you can still use it to withdraw money from a cash machine too. It will work exactly like your previous card, just with the option to use contactless as well.

LL83 · 15/12/2019 16:33

Bank are not unreasonable as contactless is standard now.

Contactless transactions do take a little longer to show so can be difficult to track, you can easily use chip and pin for every purchase and never use contactless though

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/12/2019 16:33

Just dont like the idea of contactless.

Can you say why not? Is it because of the lack of security?

OP posts:
hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/12/2019 16:35

If the vast majority of people are happy with something asking them to opt in as opposed to the minuscule minority being expected to opt out is crackers
