The long number on the front of the card is different apart from the first five numbers with no explanation as to why.

Im assuming it can still be used as chip and pin and to withdraw money from the ATM as well.

Does not say anything to confirm this in the info leaflet provided. Having read a thread from last year im not too sure i would be happy with contactless.

If you don't want to use the card cobtactlessly don't use it contactlessly. Continue to use your chip and pin, not really something to get annoyed about

The Care Home I worked in had lockers, and that was ten years ago.
Why are you making an issue out of nothing?

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 15/12/2019 18:52

Re work place security I find it very difficult to believe that anyone would be willing to leave their keys, purse and card in an insecure, out of sight, location at work.

I work on a secure ward where personal.items are not allowed. Until last year our bags had to go in a cupboard that was locked but all staff had access to it, there were several thefts. I also occasionally cover other areas in the hospital and it's rare that a ward has spare lockers for temporary staff.

It's a bit of a derail but I do get the ops concerns.

One thing many accounts do now (Halifax, Lloyds etc) is you can go online and lock your card so it cannot be used for any transactions.
This could be useful if you wanted to secure your card for a period of time.

I have two current accounts and only use one for online transactions, transferring enough each time to it prior to buying whatever it is I want online, but never use it other than online. The other account I never use online, but only for contactless/chip and pin transactions when out and about. My salary pays into my savings account and I transfer enough to run the other two accounts. If I lost my chip and pin shopping card I'm sure the bank would flag any online transaction and likewise if my online card details were cloned there really wouldn't be enough in the account to buy more than a couple of bags of sugar. Either way no fraudster will get my cash!

I told my bank I didn't want contact less, so my debit card isn't. I do use internet banking, but prefer chip and pin.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:53

Ive decided what im going to do Thanks for the input.

Contactless is “normal” now. You couldn’t opt out of having chip and PIN earlier on either. Or having a smart card before that. It’s a normal feature now get used to it

Auldspinster · 15/12/2019 18:56

I used to work in card fraud for a bank, contactless is one of the most secure ways to use your card. The first eight digits signify the card issuer and the bank within the group e.g in the RBS group most personal account cards will start with 4751 the 4 digits after that will indicate that the customer banks with either natwest, rbs or Ulster bank and the last 8 numbers will be personal to that customer.

There are things called pockets. Also unless your employers are going to be searching in your underwear there are plenty of options for mini cross body bags/ mini bum bags/ waist bags which would hold bank cards.

coconuttelegraph · 15/12/2019 18:57

That’s because ATMs don’t use contactless

I've used a cash machine today that had a contactless reader on it - what is that for then?

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 18:59

They make bras with pockets.
Keep your valuables closeGrin

Mucky1 · 15/12/2019 19:05

I'm with Barclays and you can switch off the contactless feature of the card

Iwantacookie · 15/12/2019 19:14

Lloyd's refuse to send me a non contact less card but also wont show contactless transactions for up to 3 days.
Messes me about too much.

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/12/2019 19:15

The polices answer was very similiar to yours, Dont take your house keys to the pool with you.

So a completely different situation.

Floooopy · 15/12/2019 19:16

I lost my contactless credit card a few weeks ago. It was a joint account and we didn't notice for a week that someone must have found it and gone on a mini shopping spree - mini because most transactions were between £1 and £5. They'd been around the city we live in to Greg's, a charity shop, Primark, tesco... big spenders!

Just phoned the bank, told them which were our transactions and which weren't and they'd refunded the money within a few days.

I like to think a homeless person had a nice week and the only one to lose out was a bank Grin

We weren't worried that the new cards issued were contactless.

ClaireDendie · 15/12/2019 19:17

What Hmm my 12 year old has a contactless card, I'm sure it's just standard these days, I'm not sure what's the problem is?

FlamingoAndJohn · 15/12/2019 19:20

There are things called pockets.

Not in a lot of women’s clothes.
Also, many employers won’t allow you to have anything in your pockets, and yes they do search you, including your underwear.

I used to work for Boots. We weren’t allowed anything in our pockets. I used to get dreadful chapped lips there due to the air con. I was told that I couldn’t have a chap stick in my pocket as I might have stolen it. I was told the same when it was a Superdrug branded chap stick.
We would get searched when you went home at the end of the day, including your underwear.

I used to go home for lunch, no searches then.....

LadyCordeliaVorkosigan · 15/12/2019 19:24

I don't have contactless becsuse I use Oyster for travel - becsuse you can't yet get Disabled Railcard discounts using contactless. It's mildly annoying needing to do PIN etc for lunch at work (no cash taken) but otherwise I don't think it's a bad thing. I've noticed I'm not asked for the PIN now sometimes for amounts under 10 quid - will be handy if work adopt that!

smemorata · 15/12/2019 19:29

I left my bank card in a self service till once and didn't realise for 3 days. In that sort of scenario, if someone took it and used it I wouldn't be covered.

DeathMetalMum · 15/12/2019 19:30

Last year the bank sent me a contactless card three times before I was sent a regular chil and pin. The first time I rang them and requested a non-contactless card. Then I had to go to my branch twice and they still sent me a contactless card after telling them in person the first time.

This thread makes as much sense as complaining about cars having airbags

There speaks someone who has never been left out of pocket after card theft!
