The long number on the front of the card is different apart from the first five numbers with no explanation as to why.

Im assuming it can still be used as chip and pin and to withdraw money from the ATM as well.

Does not say anything to confirm this in the info leaflet provided. Having read a thread from last year im not too sure i would be happy with contactless.

@HeIenaDove

In answer to your OP.. it's a bit of both.
YABU in that times are changing.
YANBU because yes it's a bit presumptions.
But just call up and they can deactivate it (or send a new card depending on bank)

Likethebattle · 15/12/2019 17:12

My contactless transactions show up straight away. My available balance adjusts accordingly instantly.

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 17:14

Seen contactless fraud run up to over £10k so wouldn't be so sure.

How😳 There really are limits.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 17:14

When i was doing a Christmas temp job in 2004 there was nowhere to lock way our bags, At the end of my shift i went in the staffroom to find my handbag on the floor and some of the contents strewn all over the floor Zip compartment where i keep my keys was undone and so was my purse.

Im glad contactless wasnt around then.

FlamingoAndJohn Santander and Barclays both have some contactless ATMs. You still have to put your pin in so kinda defeats the object I think

Barclays let you use your phone app as well which people might find useful if they’ve forgotten their card

HunnyMummy1993 · 15/12/2019 17:15

Now I don’t want a contactless bank card...

Because I do all the small transactions via applepay. I don’t even take my cards with me day to day anymore.

But I’m too lazy to reorder a non contactless Card.

As for the transactions showing more slowly...not in my experience I use monzo and it shows pretty much instantaneously.

Ponoka7 · 15/12/2019 17:16

You have to tell them that you don't want one. My DD doesn't want contactless because of safety issues.

HunnyMummy1993 · 15/12/2019 17:18

Now this is where I love online banking. I am a serial loser of purses and handbags. I can temporarily freeze all my cards within the app. Right there and then Until I find the damn things.

TryingToBeBold · 15/12/2019 17:19

@AllergicToAMop

8 years in banking.. there really isn't.

userxx · 15/12/2019 17:19

I think there was more fraud with the old signature style payments. My eyesight isn't great so contactless is much easier for me, notating to find find glasses in the bottom of my handbag.

loobylou10 · 15/12/2019 17:21

Yes, how? Mine is only for amounts under £30 and every so often I have to input my pin

Crystal1975 · 15/12/2019 17:23

Just don’t use it contactless then?
Always use chip and pin ?
It’s not that complicated surely 🤦‍♀️

Topseyt · 15/12/2019 17:23

I thought that thread a year ago was a fuss over nothing to be honest.

Contactless is only up to £30, beyond that you still have to use chip and pin if you are in a shop. It seems fairly secure to me and it is here to stay. It shows up on my online banking immediately.

I would guess that contactless will slowly take over completely from chip and pin as the limits increase during the next few years. So trying to avoid having contactless cards will be like saying that you don't want a debit card at all.

BlaueLagune · 15/12/2019 17:24

I didn't want a contactless card either but the bank told me if I didn't have a contactless card I'd be unable to use wireless card machines, too. So, for example, the ones in restaurants, or if I wanted to buy a ticket on a train.

I don't see how being able to spend £30 without using your PIN is more secure than having to use your PIN but I went for the contactless card in the end.

TryingToBeBold · 15/12/2019 17:26

@loobylou10

Contactless is £30 per transaction yes.
PIN requirements are card machine based not your card.
Fraudsters can have time and patience believe me. If they've got hours.. then they will spend hours going from store to store. Fraudster to fraudster.
Should a PIN ever be asked for.. ditch the card. Onto the next one.

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 17:29

Contactless is £30 per transaction yes.

That's what I've been saying. There are limits.
They would need to do over 300 transactions to get near to 10k...

TryingToBeBold · 15/12/2019 17:31

@AllergicToAMop

Indeed.
It can. It has been. And it will continue to be done..

Contactless isn't always stopped either if the card is blocked.

snowybaubles · 15/12/2019 17:33

Hundreds of retailers have dropped the £30 limit.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 15/12/2019 17:33

Also the numbers change on every card

I'm with HSBC and got a new card recently with the same number on the front. The one on the back is different though.

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 17:34

Couldn't resist.
If they need to do 333 transactions to get to 10k (+/- few pounds), presuming each transaction takes 30 min (walking from shop to shop, finding sellable goods under 30, paying, leaving) it would take 9990 minutes which is nearly 7 days if my calculations are correct.
Improbable.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 15/12/2019 17:34

I must live in a terrible town as I’ve seen quite a few people On my local Facebook page over the last couple of years saying that their Contactless card was stolen and Used.

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 17:34

And that's if they go 24/7

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/12/2019 17:35

I mainly use cash, I have to watch my money and find it easier for me to do it this way, however, I like the option of chip and pin and contactless, and I absolutely do bank online.
I can't understand narrowing your options Confused

dementedpixie · 15/12/2019 17:37

There is still a £30 for contactless cards. Other methods of paying e g. Using phones have a higher limit. Looks like they will be asking for a pin more often if you read the links I posted

snowybaubles · 15/12/2019 17:38

Sorry ignore me. Stupid moment. Confused contactless card and contactless mobile Blush
