The long number on the front of the card is different apart from the first five numbers with no explanation as to why.

Im assuming it can still be used as chip and pin and to withdraw money from the ATM as well.

Does not say anything to confirm this in the info leaflet provided. Having read a thread from last year im not too sure i would be happy with contactless.

@TryingToBeBold that's interesting.

There’s a lot of fear mongering on this thread!

The fact is as long as you look after your account, as in you check it regularly and you are responsible with your belongings (not leaving it on show in an open parked car for instance) then if anything suspicious happens you can report it to your bank as soon as you realise. This usually entitles you to be covered against any fraudulent activity.

If you don’t look at your bank statements from one month to the next then you’ve got a problem. But for the majority of people, who have regular access - either online or by checking on a cash machine / telephone banking etc, any fraudulent activity can be picked up immediately or very very soon.

Also, contactless simply does not work until you activate your card via chin and pin.

No banks send the pin and card out together.

If you don’t want contactless then just use cash - the world moves on, contactless is a huge advantage and obvs people like it or it wouldn’t be a thing. Why should they offer both when they have ample processes in place to reduce risk of fraud.

Hello! The 21st century is calling!

Chip and pin is much easier and quicker - shows directly in your account.

So is using an app on your phone - I can make a transfer within one minute of receiving a bill or pay a friend back. I can move money between my accounts to ensure I don't go overdrawn or add to my savings. And I can check my balance at any time day or night.

Online banking is getting a bit old school itself. How do you check your balance on a daily basis?

Cash is the least secure form of money surely?

Next you'll be wanting a cheque book!

PhilbricksCat · 15/12/2019 18:18

PIN can often be sent with the card

PIN and card are always sent separately.

You do have to input your PIN every 4 or 5 times if all the contactless transactions are In the same day

That can't possibly be correct. I don't have an Oyster card so I use it on the underground and will often use my card more than that in one day when I'm in London.

TryingToBeBold · 15/12/2019 18:18

@isabellerossignol

Sorry just to add. They will be sent separately. But can be sent at the same time.

Brilliant isn't it?

TryingToBeBold · 15/12/2019 18:20

Yea sorry for the confusion. Card and PIn wont be sent in the same envelope. That's a risk obviously. But can be system requested at the same time.

So how can we force employers to provide lockers for handbags.

So how can we force employers to provide lockers for handbags.

You are basing you entire problem on one event that happened to you 15 years ago?

If your work place is so insecure don’t take your purse to work with you.

PhilbricksCat · 15/12/2019 18:28

If your work place really is this insecure perhaps buy something like a Radley pocket bag which you keep with you and wear all the time. The smallest versions are very neat (they are designed to be capable of worn under a jacket or cardigan) but have ample room for cards, purse and keys.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:28

I dont currently work Im a full time carer. But there are many who will be worried about this.

Several years ago swimmers at our local pool got stuff nicked.

The polices answer was very similiar to yours, Dont take your house keys to the pool with you.

I suppose they think people can get back into their houses by the power of prayer or by clicking their shoes and repeating the mantra "theres no place like home"

SteelRiver · 15/12/2019 18:34

You can still use it for Chip & PIN, so dont be worrying about that. Just tell the retailer it's what you prefer. As for the numbers, most of the long PAN numbers used to include the account number and sort code. That's now different for obvious security reasons.

Rezie · 15/12/2019 18:35

I have contactless cards from different banks. This problem is never when using contactless as Oyster. But my one bank checks my contacless pin about every 10 purchases. Other one never. my bf who has a defferent bank also never checks.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:38

Ta Steel I didnt realize contactless had been around so long already My previous card is from 2016 and its non contactless.

Well I would not leave my house keys in a swimming pool changing locker with anything which had my address on it. Yes , still inconvenient if stolen but the keys themselves are of no use to anyone.

Re work place security I find it very difficult to believe that anyone would be willing to leave their keys, purse and card in an insecure, out of sight, location at work.

Nicknacky · 15/12/2019 18:41

Seriously, why are you worrying about what lockers that employers that you don’t work for, have for staff that you don’t know?

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:43

Employees have no choice. Care homes retail. Other low status jobs

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 15/12/2019 18:43

I don’t have have a locker at work. It doesn’t bother everyone.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:44

Im just using it as an example. Still it doesnt apply to me so i shouldnt worry about it if it doesnt as thats the way it is now.

OP posts:
HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 18:45

Nick you are in the police thats a lot different from a care home or retail.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 15/12/2019 18:46

Exactly, don’t waste your time thinking employers should be “forced” to provide lockers.

FerreroRocherAreAmazing · 15/12/2019 18:46

If you go into your bank you can opt out of contact less cards. Its your choice if you want it and so banks still have the option to not have one. HTH.

Nicknacky · 15/12/2019 18:46

Helena Don’t be fooled. Where you have people, you have thieves. The police is no different to that.

doublebarrellednurse · 15/12/2019 18:47

Thing is. And it's a big thing. You don't have to use contactless even if you have the facility.

userxx · 15/12/2019 18:48

So how can we force employers to provide lockers for handbags.

How has contactless cards moved onto employers providing lockers? You carry a bag around with your valuables.
