to not be happy about bank assuming i want contactless card.

The long number on the front of the card is different apart from the first five numbers with no explanation as to why.

Im assuming it can still be used as chip and pin and to withdraw money from the ATM as well.

Does not say anything to confirm this in the info leaflet provided. Having read a thread from last year im not too sure i would be happy with contactless.

@HeIenaDove new cards aren’t automatically sent out with the contactless you can request a non contactless one just contact the bank and order a new card without contactless facility your exhausting card will cease to be usable within 14 days and your new card should arrive within 5 working days so pretty easy to solve.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2019 16:36

Can't you just choose not to use the contactless feature?

Newmumma83 · 15/12/2019 16:36

Existing sorry not exhausting

Littlepond · 15/12/2019 16:36

Just don’t use it for contactless then! Stick with chip and pin for every transaction. I’m sorry but I’m not sure I see the problem, you do have a choice whether to use contactless or not. So just don’t 🤷🏼‍♀️

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/12/2019 16:36

I've never met anyone who has had a fraudulent contactless transaction

CharityConundrum · 15/12/2019 16:37

Just dont like the idea of contactless. IMO this should be opt in not opt out.

Given that the VAST majority of people do want contactless, I think asking the banks to waste a huge sum of money on an opt-in system seems a bit of an overreaction. Have you actually contacted your bank about this yet?

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:37

OK As long as i can use it as normal thats fine. The usual leaflet that comes with new card didnt make that clear.

Redcrayons · 15/12/2019 16:37

You don't have to use the contactless feature. You can still use chip and pin exactly as you currently do. You can't use contactless for over £30 so I do a mix of both.

I've never noticed any difference between the time it takes to appear on my account, and I check via online banking every day.

Snufflesdog · 15/12/2019 16:37

It’s 2019, its fine.
It does show up on your account as pending transactions with most banks

It can obviously be used as a regular card
Since contactless is only up to £30 and you are not expected to only spend £30 at a time ever.

No one says you have to use contactless just because the card is capable of it.

Newmumma83 · 15/12/2019 16:38

Though vast majority of card issues are from online fraud not contactless and much the same if you many banks will refund / put you back into the same position you should be if something as been fraudulently purchased provided you are not at fault ( e.g you write your pin down and keep
It in your purse so they can use that )

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:38

Er no I only received new card yesterday afternoon and today is Sunday.

PooWillyBumBum · 15/12/2019 16:39

Most big banks allow you to request a non contactless one. I know HSBC do. It’s not unreasonable for them send out contactless when most people use it. If you don’t like it you can ask for one without.

HamsterHolder · 15/12/2019 16:39

Contact less has much lower/non existent levels of fraud compared to chip and pin. So you're trying to opt out of a more secure system. Any time you swipe at a shop or cash point there could be a skimmer in place. Contact less transfers a token for payment which can only be used once, keeping your card details safe and secure.

snowybaubles · 15/12/2019 16:40

You CAN use contactless over £30. Lots of places have changed the limit.

LL83 · 15/12/2019 16:40

Contactless means card can be used for transactions under £30 without pin. Just hold it at card machine and it beeps. If you do many contactless transactions in a row then eventually you will be asked for pin.

There can be a delay in showing on your balance so if that is an issue for you then it might be worth avoiding contactless.

You can always use your chip and pin as usual for any transaction. And it works at ATM in the same way.

Contactless is an additional feature, everything you had will be the same.

QuantumEntanglement · 15/12/2019 16:41

When you say contactless transactions take longer to show, how much longer? An hour? A day? I’m in the USA and it’s instant here. And how is it really a problem if you get receipts to show what you’ve spent that day so can figure it out from those what your balance should be?

Seems like it’s a case of resistance to change for the sake of being resistant to change.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:41

Hamster thanks..............that makes it clearer. Maybe they should put that in the leaflets.

OP posts:
Snufflesdog · 15/12/2019 16:42

Also the numbers change on every card

Because it’s the card number

And it’s a different card.

Why are you getting annoyed about something you have absolutely no idea about. Just do some research.

bookmum08 · 15/12/2019 16:43

It used to be that you had to 'activate' the contactless by putting in your pin the first time you use it. If you have never done that then the contactless won't work. My card is contactless but I have never used it that way.

lazylinguist · 15/12/2019 16:43

What? Confused Contactless cards can also be used for chip and pin transactions. Some shops don't even have contactless machines! Plus contactless transactions show up just as quickly as chip and pin ones.

MissConductUS · 15/12/2019 16:44

The fact that the card details can be read remotely and without any action on your part is a security risk. I don't have one but use Apple Pay instead, which is just as convenient but much more secure.

HeIenaDove · 15/12/2019 16:45

OK that sounds a bit better. Thanks.

OP posts:
hobnobsaremyfavourite · 15/12/2019 16:45

Contactless isn't compulsory
You can
Brace yourself
Not use it
And just use it as a chip and pin card as normal
Surely everyone knows that Confused

isabellerossignol · 15/12/2019 16:46

I'm sure I read the other day that now every fifth transaction, or something like that, will have to be paid for using chip and pin. Presumably to prevent someone stealing your card and then going on a contactless shopping spree in the time it take you to report it missing. So contactless is becoming more secure. Although like others, I have never known anyone who has been defrauded with contactless anyway.

AllergicToAMop · 15/12/2019 16:48

It should be no issue if it takes longer than instantly to show on the account if you actually don't bank online.

I am quite surprised this is your first contactless. Mine were contactless for years now. I think since 2016?
