Whilst I totally agree that Scotland has the right to become independent, it seems to me that they want to push though a vote without telling the people how they expect to fund themselves, what currency they will use and what trading agreement they expect to have with the UK. I really think that these things should be made clear to the rest of the UK before they are allowed their rightful vote - A weak Scotland using our currency could drag us all down with them and a soft border would encourage the continued uncontrolled migration to England via Scotland. Seline Hadrian's Wall is not the border. Northumberland is in England but north of the wall.
Where is Jon Snow when you need him lol.

Sturgeon can rant on tv as much as she wants. If the govenrmet isn't in power in Westminster doesn't allow it she has no power to force it. Any talk of Catalonia style referendums would be null and void and however much people like cherry come up with court cases the law is clear on this point.

Which law? Which court?

HoHoHoik · 15/12/2019 01:34

Was about to say the same Willyoujustbequiet, Hadrian's Wall is in England.

zsazsajuju · 15/12/2019 01:42

The racism on this thread shows exactly why the union isn’t working for Scotland. And all the rubbish about how Scotland “couldn’t” be independent. There are a great many countries in the EU (and elsewhere) who have smaller economies and are much less wealthy than Scotland.

If there was a hard border with Scotland, that would be because there was a hard border with the rest of the EU. That would leave R U.K. much much worse off. The EU will remain the worlds largest and wealthiest trading area post Brexit.its rUK who would be losing with a poor trade agreement and hard border.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2019 02:01

I've got a brilliant idea. Like the Americans, the Scots could have the Scottish diaspora file for taxes in Scotland. Want a Scottish passport (and hopefully an EU one)? File for Scottish taxes. The Scottish diaspora is absolutely massive and fairly well off and patriotic.

Quids in.

justcly · 15/12/2019 02:46

@zsazsajuju: please don't misuse the term "racism".

zsazsajuju · 15/12/2019 02:51

@justcly no misuse here. Some blatant racism on this thread.

dreichXmas · 15/12/2019 03:40

@MrsTerryPratchett DH lives in hope that being married to a Scot, all be it one living abroad at present might provide an EU passport.
We would definitely be prepared to pay for this, it is a very valuable thing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/12/2019 03:46

We would definitely be prepared to pay for this, it is a very valuable thing.

Most of the Scottish people abroad I know would. Someone should write to Nicola!

Monkeynuts18 · 15/12/2019 03:53

You’re right that there would have to be a hard border. But it would be Scotland’s job to enforce it to comply with their obligations under EU law. Scotland would have to adopt the Euro though, as it’s conpulsory for new joiners to the EU, so your comments about currency aren’t right.

madeyemoodysmum · 15/12/2019 04:33

Crikey. Those of you wanting the euro are crazy.
Have you been to Ireland? It’s madly expensive.
Look forward to food bills a third more expensive

ElluesPichulobu · 15/12/2019 04:48

sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

yes you are right that an independent Scotland would need a hard border if it achieved independence, especially if membership of the EU remains a goal.

it has been firmly established that (a) it is better to risk an economic hit for the right to determine one's own destiny as a nation than to compromise with membership of a union that diverges politically and (b) it is perfectly reasonable to run a referendum to determine the Will of the People long before the practical detail is worked out and negotiate terms of leaving later.

the uk didn't have to tell the people what the deal would be before the Brexit referendum so why should Scotland be expected to follow a different path? and why should central government spend vast amounts of time, effort and money negotiating a deal and a legal framework for the new independent nation prior to a referendum which might make the whole shebang moot if the people vote No?

justcly · 15/12/2019 05:59

@zsazsajuju: Funny that. I'm mixed race; pretty sensitive to racism, and I haven't spotted any.

@ElluesPichulobu: have a biscuit.

Cam77 · 15/12/2019 06:26

The Scots are of no electoral benefit to the Tories anyway, which is all the really care about - power. What would Johnson and the Tories prefer? 3 years of a million Scots on the streets, general strikes etc, or another referendum? The idea of denying another referendum to a country completely politically dominated by the SNP is absurd. What do you suggest, sending the Met police up to Glasgow to start cracking heads like Madrid did to Catalonia? Absurd.

Cam77 · 15/12/2019 06:28

Scotland is part of a consensual union of countries FFS. It is not a province of England. Some seem to struggle with this basic fact.

StreetwiseHercules · 15/12/2019 06:45

Scotland can choose political independence and is likely to do so rather than being governed by the right wing conservative politics consistently favoured by the English electorate.

I don’t care much whether we rejoin the EU, but I do care about the fact that a hard Tory Brexit is to be imposed upon Scotland against its will.

Scotland in EFTA would do me just fine, and membership of EFTA will not be a problem.

StreetwiseHercules · 15/12/2019 06:47

“ Crikey. Those of you wanting the euro are crazy.
Have you been to Ireland? It’s madly expensive. ”

GDP per capital is also higher in the Republic of Ireland than in the UK. It’s relative.

I would prefer a Scottish currency.

StreetwiseHercules · 15/12/2019 06:54

“ Also Scotland would have to take the Euro.”

That is absolutely not true. There are 11 different currencies in use in the EU, including from states who have joined recently. The Swiss Franc is even a live EU currencies and Switzerland isn’t the EU.

GhostEmoji · 15/12/2019 07:05

StreetwiseHercules we would have to take the Euro as a condition of joining as an independent state. We would just have to. Of course we would have to address the deficit issue first to be considered. But why let economics get in the way of independence. Freeeeeeeeeedooooooooom

Please stop lying about that. Thanks.

Grin good one

StreetwiseHercules · 15/12/2019 07:28

I take it you didn’t read to the bottom.

GhostEmoji · 15/12/2019 07:29

I'm a lawyer - I start reading at the bottom.

GhostEmoji · 15/12/2019 07:31

When you read the context of Mr Juncker's comment it is absolutely clear that we would have to take the Euro.

StreetwiseHercules · 15/12/2019 07:37

I see! 😂
