To ask about the fundamental Tory belief?

So I've argued with quite a few people today about this issue, not on MN but in RL and on other forums. Most tories I know seem to share this belief that we are all responsible for our own fortune, or lack of it.
So that's the underlying reason that they are against higher taxes ('I've worked hard so why should I pay for those who haven't.')

So how does one do this? Are you honestly saying that everyone can become successful?

I'm just thinking aloud, but could it be possible that we as a nation are literally unable to adequately care for all those that need assistance? That we just don't have the funds.

It's not much of a stretch in any case to wonder if some people have indeed arrived at this conclusion and are more interested in building the economy in the hope of being more capable in the future - refusing to try and catch a falling knife.

It's not necessarily my own belief (I couldn't possibly attempt to answer conclusively) but I can see how some might think this.

I completely agree re Medicine. Why do we train so few?

The government don't want to stump up the cost of training when they can just filch doctors easily from other countries where someone else has footed the bill.

PigeonofDoom · 15/12/2019 22:41

Bear in mind that to produce new doctors you need people to train them. Medical teaching is quite specialist and lots of doctors have neither the time nor inclination to take on a university post (and all the extra admin that entails). You also need the placements in teaching hospitals etc. Add in the fact that we are losing medical staff due to brexit (and becoming a less attractive destination for overseas doctors due to pound, working conditions and soon to be lack of access to EU networks), then we are in a situation where we don’t have the staff to train the doctors we need.

PigeonofDoom · 15/12/2019 22:44

I should also add that a lot of doctors that come here to train go back to their country of origin. Uk doctors do the same to eg Oz, US, Germany. The general public don’t really understand the international nature of modern medicine- if doctors stuck to their own countries then progress in medical innovation would be very, very slow.

In most areas of business part time working requests are refused. That is not the case in medicine. If we stopped allowing doctors to work full time unless they brought out a good case for it which would satisfy a private sector employer we might find things are helped a bit. I believe a lot of GPs work part time although I accept they are a different case because they are self employed (those that own the practices)

PigeonofDoom · 16/12/2019 08:59

Then you’d lose lots of female doctors, Xenia. Just like you lose women in law, finance, academic research (speaking from experience!), architecture etc. All careers where part time working is frowned on and women disappear from the workplace in their droves once they have families. Can we afford to lose that many doctors?

I don’t think Boris really has any opinions of his own. He’s a journalist at heart and says whatever appeals to his readers/backers/voters.

Abso-fucking-lutely

You are free to think what you like, just as others are free to think what they like about Corbyn and Momentum, neither are right and neither are wrong.

Labour has 4 years to regroup, you could try and carry on calling everyone else thick and or racist and see if it can work this time, or you could maybe accept you might be slightly deluded.

Either way, after 5 days it might be time to offer some self reflection instead of trying to tell everyone else that they are wrong.

PigeonofDoom · 17/12/2019 22:21

Er okay. I’m not a big labour supporter so you’re targeting the wrong person there. You can think Boris is a lying, self absorbed tosspot without supporting Corbyn.
