And move on with a united country, can we stop bickering and accept what people have voted for?

pumper that's what I mean, why isn't it just labour get 100 votes, tory get 120 - so they win?

I know theres probably a logical reason but nobody has ever explained it to me Grin

Drabarni · 13/12/2019 12:51

We will soon find out the extent of the damage to our country and that will be difficult to accept.
I think our society will have a lot to answer for when our children suffer through poor education and their parents inability to afford private healthcare.
But society is selfish and greedy, the rich not wanting to lose a bit of their money.

Pumperthepumper · 13/12/2019 12:52

Sorry, that was a bit garbled - obviously if another party got 60% then they would win! The point is the seat would then be shared, not just handed to one party on a small percentage of the votes.

Pumperthepumper · 13/12/2019 12:55

Sorry, I don’t understand what you mean here - our current system means whoever gets the highest percentage of votes per constituency wins, which means if the vote is split (which it usually is) then it’s harder for those parties to get a majority. So last night, had the vote not been split between Labour and Lib Dem then the Tories wouldn’t have had that majority.

scarbados · 13/12/2019 12:55

Accept that yesterday more Tory MPs were elected than Labour? Of course, it's a fact so I have to accept that it happened.

Accept as in 'be happy with', not a chance! Not today, not ever!

I'm finding it difficult to understand how so many people were taken in by BJ's lies that he will increase funding for the NHS and social care, and fix the education system and stop homeless people dying on our streets. He and his party have done bugger all about any of the social problems for the 9 years they've already had. So why did people believe him now?

And austerity was not caused by the EU - it was a Tory policy that gave us that little gem. I suppose the thinking behind it was 'If you starve them then promise to feed them, they'll love you and blame someone else for them being hungry'. It worked and I'm disgusted at the deprived area I live in for falling for it and at my generation for leading the charge into a black hole.

MrsDeltaB · 13/12/2019 12:56

It's the use of the word 'devastating' or I'm devastated that's bugging me. Bugged, disappointed, miffed, fed up maybe but devastated?

Devastating is a death or a natural disaster. This is an election result and for whatever reason folks wanted Cons so that's what we get. We just need to move on and get on with life surely?

Snowdropfairy85 · 13/12/2019 12:56

How would that even work with trying to get things done though?

hsegfiugseskufh · 13/12/2019 12:57

pumper I mean, you don't vote for your local mp you just vote for the party, so rather then whoever gets the most seats wins, whoever gets the most votes just in total wins?

or is that how it already works!

Stabilos · 13/12/2019 12:58

Nope. Hunt and Mill didn't accept the voting outcome of their campaigns.

managedmis · 13/12/2019 12:59

So the majority of British people are a lot stupider than what I gave them credit for. Vast, vast majority, that map is Tory blue!

It's the US and Trump all over again.

managedmis · 13/12/2019 12:59

How would that even work with trying to get things done though?

^ This is a thread in itself.

capsule · 13/12/2019 12:59

Whether we accept the vote or not, the country is deeply divided.

allthingsred · 13/12/2019 13:00

@MrsDeltaB people have died due to austerity. Cuts that the torys have made to mental health sevices, police numbers, the brilliant u/c system just a few examples. People have a right to be devastated.

TabbyMumz · 13/12/2019 13:00

I'm just pleased that all those people who werent happy with the referendum result and who said on here that we needed another referendum because "people have changed their minds or were hoodwinked in some way, and remain would win"...were obviously completely wrong. The majority of the country clearly does want brexit.

managedmis · 13/12/2019 13:01

Hopefully this result will lead to independence for Scotland and reunification of Ireland.

^

I'd say so.

TabbyMumz · 13/12/2019 13:01

"Whether we accept the vote or not, the country is deeply divided."
I dont know how you can say that with such an outstanding majority?

Snowdropfairy85 · 13/12/2019 13:02

Whichever party gets the most votes in each seat wins that seat, the party that has the majority of seats is the one that is able to form a government.

managedmis · 13/12/2019 13:02

We just need to move on and get on with life surely?

^
Yes. Surely.

Confused
Pumperthepumper · 13/12/2019 13:02

@Bollykecks I’m still not 100% sure what you mean - do you mean just scrapping all the seats and picking a party rather than an MP? If we did that it would be very difficult to vote on what best suits your area because of the wealth gap in the UK.

AuldAlliance · 13/12/2019 13:04

A majority did not vote for Brexit supporting parties, as the Cons and BXP are really the only two of those and they didn't get a majority of votes (as opposed to seats).

BreconBeBuggered · 13/12/2019 13:04

Having no choice but to accept the inevitable doesn't imply approval, OP. I'm confused, terrified and frankly disgusted at this outcome. I can't see myself ever getting behind it. I think it's a huge mistake.

Butchyrestingface · 13/12/2019 13:06

So the majority of British people are a lot stupider than what I gave them credit for. Vast, vast majority, that map is Tory blue

Please be specific. You mean the English (and to a lesser extent, Welsh).

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 13/12/2019 13:06

Devastating is a death or a natural disaster.

17,000 disabled people have died waiting for an outcome to their PIP appeal. 130 disabled die every month within three months of being turned down for PIP. What the fuck makes you think we're not talking about actual deaths here?

My DH is disabled, having to appeal his PIP decision and reliant on the NHS to keep him alive. We are not in a privileged bubble that means we can afford private healthcare. If the Tories don't reverse NHS cuts as a priority, if they don't urgently overhaul the benefits system to make it easier for disabled applicants to access the help they deserve, there is every chance that he will be another one of those deaths. So don't you dare tell me I'm not entitled to use the word "devastated" if I so choose.

ShatnersWig · 13/12/2019 13:07

More people voted for remain or second referendum parties in this general election than voted for outright leave parties. In fact, roughly 52:48.

Pumperthepumper · 13/12/2019 13:08

@Bollykecks I get it, sorry, you mean: if there were two hundred thousand votes for Labour but only for one seat, why don’t the total number of votes count overall? I don’t know the answer to that, I’m afraid! Aside from: We use FPTP in Britain, and that’s that.
