And move on with a united country, can we stop bickering and accept what people have voted for?

Labour supporters can hardly unite among themselves, asking the whole country to do so is a pretty tall order.

CharlottesPleb · 14/12/2019 00:18

While you were busy parting each other on the back for being so wonderful and virtuous you were oblivious to something.

The opposition to democracy is the force for evil the whole country has just united against.

Most people have just had a revolt against you, have come out because we Must Protect People's Votes.

You should be protesting against democracy, demonstrating your opposition to the peaceful transfer of power and the implementation of democratic votes. You should be brave enough tha we can all see who you are.

BearFoxBear · 14/12/2019 00:19

I'll accept that there’s a Conservative majority and that gives Johnson the mandate to deliver on his manifesto, disgusted as I am by the English vote.

But brexit is bullshit built on lies.

So, I'll also expect that the fact that there's a huge SNP majority in Scotland will be accepted, and that gives Sturgeon the mandate to deliver the things in her manifesto, and an independence referendum will be granted.

Or is democractic will only a valid concept if you're not Scottish?

OneHanded · 14/12/2019 00:22

The point is we’re not a united county though! Yes the majority wanted to leave but it was exceptionally close and that leaves nearly half of the county excluded and having things move in a direction we really don’t want.

Deadsouls · 14/12/2019 00:24

This, taken from FB:

'We enjoyed this from Jon Douthwaite:

“So congratulations if you wanted Boris Johnson as pm.

Please don’t celebrate too much though as you have work to do. You see us remoaners have spent three and a half years now telling you brexit was wrong but we’ve finally and completely lost. There’s pretty much nothing we can do now to stop it.

So, it’s over to you leavers. You need to get yourselves into gear to make it work. We need to see some of these benefits you’ve been able to see yet unable to properly articulate since 2016.

I hope you don’t mind but I’ve taken the liberty of writing a to do list for you.

  1. Get brexit done please. When we say done we mean as promised so we’ll be looking for trade deals with the EU, Japan, Australia and Canada etc. In fact there’s about 40 deals covering 70 countries that need to be done please. Also with the US that doesn’t involve the nhs or chlorine. We want what you promised us. That was that we’d be no worse off than when we were an EU member. You need to crack on as this was promised by the end of Jan. You have seven weeks.
  2. The nhs. We want the cash that was promised please. £350 million per week is about 72000 nurses so please get recruiting. This is important.
  3. Scotland. Ok so these guys were promised they would remain in the EU if they remained in the UK. They’re pretty pissed. In fact they’ve voted almost exclusively for the SNP so they might want to leave. Equally you said the UK wouldn’t split so you’ll need to both grant Scotland its independence and keep it as part of the United Kingdom. Good luck squaring this circle. NB. This is urgent.
  4. Northern Ireland. Oooookay then. You’ve really buggered this one up. There’s a chance they could look to reunify with the republic now because they didn’t want to brexit. Regardless you’ve caused instability there where we and they can least afford it. NB. This is also urgent.
  5. The economy. Johnson keeps talking about unleashing the potential of the country. We need to see this soon if possible. We don’t want to see the downturn that “project fear” predicted. We don’t want to be poorer. We don’t want to lose out.
  6. You’ll also need to “bring the country back together”. This might be tricky as a lot of people seem to be really really angry with each other.

That’s as far as I’ve got. Should keep you busy. So go and get all british about things. Roll up your sleeves, pull your socks up, dig deep and deliver what you promised.

And remember if you fail to deliver any of this it’s on you, brexit and Tory voters. You wanted this so badly and now you have it. We honestly hope we’re wrong and that you can make a success of this but if you can’t then we will forever tell you that we told you so.”

ReanimatedSGB · 14/12/2019 00:36

@CharlottesPleb what are you actually talking about? I've read your post about three times and honestly can't decide whether you are defining democracy as 'Getting Brexit Done' or whether you want to defend democracy against crooks, liars and fascists.

Mjlp · 14/12/2019 00:50

accept what people have voted for?

I think you're being very unreasonable OP. Only 45% voted for the tories in the election. Most people didn't vote for them, so I think it's highly unlikely these people will just accept them and move on united.

I'm a teacher and work in a deprived area. So many people are suffering under the tories and it will only get worse.

Brexit will hit the poorest the hardest. There's no telling what problems it's going to cause with the Irish border. We could see a return to Irish terrorism. I'm early 40s, have always lived in the East/South East of England, yet remember 'The Troubles' very clearly as a child and not being able to go to London for fear of bombs.

Universal credit will continue to be rolled out to families with 3+ children, who will lose more money than those with less/no children have lost.

I think most of the country is in sheer disbelief that so many people have voted for a lying, cheating, sexist, misogynist who has had the police called out on him and who's party continue to punish the poor and sick, especially poor and sick children to continue running our country. And people are really judging those tory voters.

I don't think there's any chance of people accepting it and moving on united. I think the division will get a lot, lot worse.

Theworldisfullofgs · 14/12/2019 00:51

The election has given me great clarity about the future. I feel clearer than I have done in 3 years and actually feel a lot better. Head done and get on with it.

I am going to focus on my business and making that a success in what will continue to be very turbulent and as predicted even more turbulent times. I will put me and my family first. Focus on my kids and continue with the plan to give them lots of options which will probably include emigration.

Therefore, I won't have time for the copious amounts of voluntary stuff on top of family and work. Someone else can do that.

Yes, I have accepted the vote and all that it means for me and my family. And having made those decisions today I feel like a weights been lifted. All I am going to contribute to is the stuff that is of benefit to me.

Pixxie7 · 14/12/2019 00:53

We should give the Tories a chance given the result. Ask us all again in a year.

Deadsouls · 14/12/2019 01:06

Yes definitely we should give the Tories the chance to deliver on their promises and the promises made in the leave campaign.

MangoStone · 14/12/2019 01:19

@Notodontidae
??
Not sure where BHS and "Entrepraneurs" have come from?

You said: If it [the EU] was so good before, why have we endured so much austerity.

I pointed out the stupidity of blaming the EU for austerity when it is a Conservative Party policy and nothing to do with the EU.

I can also help you with:

Fact 1, we will be able to make are own laws, passed by our country.
We can do this already and also have some influence over EU law and a veto. We are about to lose this. As part of a trade deal with the EU we will have to sign up to various laws and regulations without any say in them.

Fact 2. we can control the amount of immigration to suit our own citizens, preventing even bigger class sizes,
We can do this already but choose not to.
We could have smaller class sizes already if the Conservatives chose to spend the extra money that immigrants contribute on education rather than tax cuts for the rich.
When we leave the EU, immigration will go up as part of trade deals with India etc.

ReanimatedSGB · 14/12/2019 01:22

I have no intention of 'accepting' that immigration is a bad thing. The more free movement of people, the better.

MangoStone · 14/12/2019 01:25

@cardibach
The huge rural constituencies in Wales stayed as they were, either Conservative or Plaid. It was North Wales and Bridgend that went from Labour to Conservative, six seats. I guess you could call Ynys Môn rural but it's not huge.

Witchlight · 14/12/2019 01:36

No. The majority of Scotland did not vote Tory but yet again we are stuck answering to a Tory government in Westminster.

For years, the Scottish people’s vote for Labour kept Labour in power. The number of people per constituency is lower in Scotland than the rest of the UK. I’m Scottish and the Barnet formulae gives us a pretty good deal. Now that oil has plummeted in price, we are not such a rich country. I feel Scottish and part of UK ( and I wish to remain European) but respect that more people in the UK don’t.

I think it is time for people to hold the Scottish Parliament responsible for items within the devolved power, particularly where the service is less/worse than the norm in the rest of the UK. They cannot use lack of funding from Westminster as they receive more per head and can also raise more in tax locally if they want to. To my mind the nationalism shown by the SNP is akin to that shown by Farage and co.

CharlottesPleb · 14/12/2019 01:36

can't decide whether you are defining democracy as 'Getting Brexit Done' or whether you want to defend democracy against crooks, liars and fascists.

I can clarify this.

If you have opposed democracy you are the bad guys the people have just united against. The anti democratic people, the fascists.

The people of the UK will protect the UK from people like Corbyn, and will protect Democracy.

I encourage people who oppose democracy, to nail their colours to the mast and demonstrate against it.

MangoStone · 14/12/2019 01:48

Corbyn is a fascist now 😂

Flowerballs · 14/12/2019 08:07

I can't accept a bleak future for my children. We're going to emigrate as soon as possible, shinking ship now. Good luck everyone.

EmmaGellerGreen · 14/12/2019 08:13

But the majority didn’t vote Tory did they? Less than 45% of those who voted voted Tory and the turnout was 67%. So about 30% of those eligible to vote voted Tory. Hardly an overwhelming majority, more a feature of a flawed electoral system.

SleeperSloth · 14/12/2019 09:06

@Considermesometimes
Are you Scottish?
You clearly have no real understanding of what you are talking about
Scotland absolutely has the ability to be independent and financially viable. Unlike England who have very few exports, Scotland has many including whiskey, fishing and agriculture. We have our oil fields which create revenue.
We have a world class education system,NHS Scotland is performing much better than South of the border. Our government mitigates the austerity from Westminster including free prescriptions for all, free hospital parking, no bedroom tax, free public transport to our over 60s the list goes on and on
You are a fool to think that if we were going to struggle financially that Westminster would be clinging on so hard to keep us... And the revenue they take from us!

EggysMom · 14/12/2019 09:10

The only good outcome of a Tory majority is that the majority who voted to Leave the EU, will finally see democracy carried through.

If we could arrange another General Election a few months after we leave, I would be most obliged.

MooseBreath · 14/12/2019 09:22

I accept the outcome, but I do not and will not support it. I am furious that the people in England specifically have allowed themselves to be lied to by a racist and selfish leader and party. I will also be looking to leave the country as soon as my family can sort visas and support ourselves elsewhere (something many are not lucky enough to do) - I want my taxes going to to 99%, not lining the pockets of the likes of Boris Johnson.

ForalltheSaints · 14/12/2019 09:24

Accepting that is the outcome under our election process and liking it are two different things.

Remember on January 31st only the second stage of Brexit happens, there are still at least two more- the trade deal (2020 or 2021) and Northern Ireland's decision over customs arrangements (in 2024).

BuckingFrolics · 14/12/2019 09:30

I have finally accepted that many British voters are cattle being led to the slaughter as they have been force fed the message that venality is ok. That self interest is ok. That entitlement is ok. I've accepted that democracy in this country does not exist, given our FPTP system.

I've accepted that far more people than I imagined are thicker than I'd imagined - and my bar was set pretty low.

I've accepted that I'm in a minority.

So as I don't use food banks, charities of any kind, have no benefits, and have adult children, the rest of you are no longer any concern of mine and you can struggle on as best you can, reaping what you have sown.

As a formerly liberal owner of a successful business I will now take more money out for myself from the sweat of others' labour, i will shrink the profit share, link pay rises to the public sector pay rises, and demand more for less. I know that the majority of my employees voted Tory so I'll just be giving them what they asked for.

Craftylittlething · 14/12/2019 09:31

Presumably Scotland doesn’t count?

Cornettoninja · 14/12/2019 09:34

@EggysMom do you really think there’s going to be another GE that soon? I reckon the tories won’t call another till their hand is forced (grated Boris has the capability to engineer a large enough scandal to make it unavoidable).
