...to want to divorce my DH over general election?

SafferUpNorth · 13/12/2019 00:09

Feeling sick to the stomach at the predicted result. Have always assumed DH and I were roughly on the same page politically, but turns out he voted Tory 'because it's best for the economy' (WTF).

Just had a massive row... I actually cannot get him to acknowledge that by all indicators child poverty and food bank use have skyrocketed under the Tories and things will get even bleaker when the Uk 'gets Brexit done'. And let's not even mention climate change. I am terrified and DH thinks it's a great result. Is this where we part ways??

I'm sorry I didn't mean to post that here.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 06:55

There’s no way I could ever love a Tory.

Hope your kids never defy you and vote for whomever works best for them, then.

Thirtyrock39 · 13/12/2019 06:55

I voted labour dh votes conservative - always been the case. He's a teacher so it does baffle me somewhat but he's always been conservative. We share many of the same views on things just have a different political view on how to get there is how I see it.

MrsExpo · 13/12/2019 06:56

I honestly have never discussed our political preferences with my DH. We went to vote together yesterday, but I have no idea where he put his cross and will not ask him. He is entitled to vote with his own conscience and hold his own opinions, as is your DH OP.

motorcyclenumptiness · 13/12/2019 07:02

YANBU. The sole purpose of the tories is to keep the wealth of the country in the hands of the few. If you're outside that tiny demographic and you vote Tory then you're voting to increase the wealth of the already privileged at your own expense. Baffling. A handful of already wealthy people will get richer from Brexit, continued privatisation of the NHS etc; the rest of us are fucked.

Insideimsprinting · 13/12/2019 07:03

I think people do take responsibility for their votes. I think people veiw how to tackle poverty and foodanks differently. Some may tackle it directly others as part of a bigger picture. There are no right and wrong answers here running the country is not straight forward and by no means clear cut.
I can understand those who are very angry wi the result but I'm not even though I voted Labour. Would not divorce someone or shun them, this country is not a dictatorship its a democracy. We have the right to our views without fear of persecution. I refuse to behave like you op, yabu the majority have voted for Boris if he does such an appalling job he won't stay but have you seen the election maps? It appears most of the county agrees with your husband.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 07:05

Yes @motorcyclenumptiness you're correct and the majority of the country are either too stupid to understand or too rich to care Hmm

I don't understand where this 'Tories are for the rich' nonsense comes from. We're not rich, we do ok. We work hard and are much better off under a Conservative government than a Labour one.

Mlou32 · 13/12/2019 07:07

What has happened to society that people are so intolerant to the fact that other people hold different ideas/opinions to them??

PhilCornwall1 · 13/12/2019 07:11

@Mlou32

It's called mumsnet.

Bibijayne · 13/12/2019 07:17

YANBU

He can vote as he likes, but sometimes you can be incompatible due to differences in political belief.

potter5 · 13/12/2019 07:30

She's on a wind up.
People to need to calm their little selves down!

scubadive · 13/12/2019 07:31

@SafferUpNorth why do you think they had to implement austerity?

Because they’re mean and nasty and like cutting spending??

Where do you think the money comes from, I think you need to understand more about economics and politics. We spent millions bailing out the bank which dented out finances.

You are also incredibly arrogant to be so convinced that your view of politics is the ‘right’ one and your husbands the ‘wrong’ one. Your husbands view is well supported.

daisychain01 · 13/12/2019 07:31

How does your DH put up with being married to someone virtue signalling and ramming their political views down his throat all day long. Must be unbearable for the poor man.

user1484 · 13/12/2019 07:31

If politics are so important to you, I’m surprised you didn’t already know what his views are.
Haven’t you had discussions/conversations throughout all the time you’ve been together?

Skyejuly · 13/12/2019 07:33

I would struggle with this too. My son is really into torys and even laughing at me getting irate last nightShock funny because he has SEN so probably doesnt understand how much I had to fight for him. Confused

motorcyclenumptiness · 13/12/2019 07:33

I don't understand where this 'Tories are for the rich' nonsense comes from
It comes from understanding the politics, history and ideology of the tory party. Listen in to some parliamentary select committee sessions, you'll hear it flowing freely from the mouths of tory politicians.

Skyejuly · 13/12/2019 07:36

Torys ARE for the rich. They are not for the working class.

Swirls1111 · 13/12/2019 07:36

Anything can be supported. Austerity for the poor coupled with underfunded public service vs tax breaks for the rich - because because because. But you’re right, there is no right and wrong. I guess we all have lines as individuals.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 07:36

@motorcyclenumptiness I think you confuse rich and hardworking.

SusieOwl4 · 13/12/2019 07:38

user1487194234 If you think every person who voted conservatives holds those values you are very wrong . And in your world every single person who works in the nhs would vote labour , so that’s obviously not the case either . This is the devisive political rhetoric of the Labour Party . Life is not black and white and you have now insulted and made assumptions about most of the north of the uk . The majority of this country are actually the opposite. They care for people are generous with charity and want a better nhs. If you had had a more effective opposition leader we would not be in this position. I watched him a lot on pm questions. And he was literally awful .

Sawwhet · 13/12/2019 07:38

Yanbu. Everyone saying it'd controlling and is he not allowed a different opinion? Of course he is but sometimes that different opi ion might make two people roma tically incompatible!

YouneededtovoteJC · 13/12/2019 07:39

I couldn't stay married to someone that supports food banks and selling off the nhs

fromcitytocountry · 13/12/2019 07:39

Get...a...grip

Like with Brexit people voted with their feet. Those who shout the loudest don't necessarily represent how the majority feel. This was seen with Brexit and it was seen in this election too.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 07:40

I couldn't stay married to someone that supports food banks and selling off the nhs

I will repeat... Labour sold off parts of the NHS when they were last in power. The conservatives did not. Every part of the NHS that is privatised was done so by Labour.
