Fed up of labour voters righteousness

NemophilistRebel · 12/12/2019 19:31

The amount of people I’ve seen on social media say -

I’m voting labour because I don’t hate poor people / disabled people / the elderly etc

I’m just fed up of it

It’s as bad as children’s charities saying that if you don’t donate then you obviously condone child abuse.

No, it doesn’t mean I hate poor people or the disabled or the wealthy.

You don’t get this from the LIb Dems supporters, or Green Party Supporters or Tories

Agree op. I have spoken up slightly. It’s the Nazi analogies that cross the line for me

CinderellasSecrets · 12/12/2019 21:06

Voting is supposed to be anonymous. We all have equal rights to one vote, it is completely wrong to try and sway other people to vote for who you want them to vote for - just tick the box you want and leave it at that. We all have brains and the ability to think for ourselves and we can all research and make an informed decision (some people may not put much thought into it but that is ultimately their choice, and no amount of memes is going to change that). I have an opinion, I choose not to discuss my opinion because I don't think it's worth the arguments and abuse that you get from frankly very childish people who don't like the thought of getting their own way. This country has never had a government that has worked for everybody, and in my opinion never will because you will never get everybody to agree on what is right.

Creepster · 12/12/2019 21:06

More than anything I think, it is the passive aggressive self righteousness of this particular style of political virtue signaling that is on our collective last nerve.
The name of this logical fallacy is ad hominem.

andpancakesforbreakfast · 12/12/2019 21:08

What a crock of shit op.

you might want to read just a few threads on here SnowyChristmasTree there are more than enough example to illustrate what the OP is talking about.

SunshineAngel · 12/12/2019 21:08

It annoys me so much, when people think THEIR opinion is THE opinion.

The truth is that there are pros and cons to all parties. It's never going to be perfect. You have to choose the party which appeals the most to you and your needs. That's what it's about.

Nobody else has the right, no matter who they vote for, to state or insinuate that others are somehow bad people for voting a certain way.

Labour voters in particular (of which I am one, I might add, though I keep it off social media) seem to be doing a hell of a lot of that this time .. yet I have a suspicion the tories will still get in, so clearly "their" (or, I suppose, "our") opinion isn't the most popular.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/12/2019 21:10

All I've seen from Labour voters is people trying to ask others to think of the weakest in society rather than the richest when voting.

I've seen a lot of racist "jokes" from Tories though, who also profess to be deeply insulted by anti-semitism. It's only bad racism if it is against people who aren't dark skinned and apparently no one other than Tories can "take a joke" Hmm

WeshMaGueule · 12/12/2019 21:12

I think people who can afford to be lackadaisical about this election probably need to check their privilege.

ilovetinsel · 12/12/2019 21:12

Stop voting those fuckers in then 🤷‍♀️

FreeCheeseInMouseTrap · 12/12/2019 21:15

By the end of the Blair years, I was hoping and praying for the return of Tory government on Election Day. I remember living through the Labour years, while bringing up a young family, I still have not forgiven them.
And I don’t want them back.

It would be Identity politics on steroids.
The country would be bankrupt.
There will be no national security or defence.

CharlottesPleb · 12/12/2019 21:18

Imagine telling everyone who will listen that those who take a different political position to you are racist, evil, stupid, want to kill the disabled and so on...

...and that is you trying to persuade people. That's your "reasoning".

willdoitinaminute · 12/12/2019 21:19

My sons school had their own mock election. He is 15 and will be eligible to vote by the next election so I was delighted to see that they learnt a great deal from the exercise about the political process. Unlike many new voters they will not be horrified that the party they voted for didn’t win!

Swirls1111 · 12/12/2019 21:20

I quite enjoy the Tory insults. According to them I’m either a rich elitist millenial or lazy and feckless. I haven’t quite figured out which one I want to be most.

It’s not offensive, because I am neither.

Symptomless · 12/12/2019 21:20

The odds are heavily on tories to win yet again. So I'm not sure why Tory voters constantly try to act like the underdogs. You're not. You've been in government for nearly a decade and we're about to have yet another tory government. No wonder everyone else is angry.

And if you're one of those people who vote purely based on some strange notion of spite or vengeance rather than policies then that tells me all I need to know about you.

Simkin · 12/12/2019 21:20

You know righteousness is a good thing? It means being morally just.

I think Labour voters feel like this because their support for Labour comes from the desire to see everyone's welfare improved, not just their own.

I think they feel particularly so in this election because the current crop of Tory politicians have no moral redeeming features whatsoever. They can't even claim that old 'aspiration' argument because it seems that the current government isn't interested in other people's aspirations either. And they lie, and lie again. So actually they are immoral.

But maybe immorality is actually more sensible and pragmatic as an individual and if that's your view that is your right. It isn't mine; yes I do feel righteous.

SinkGirl · 12/12/2019 21:21

I agree OP - people are so obsessed with minorities - they get plenty of help

Please tell me you are kidding.

Genevieva · 12/12/2019 21:22

Labour have successfully created this narrative, but it is erroneous. Each party has its own history. Labour's is tied to the creation of unions for an industrial workforce. It was important for worker rights, but Labour have never had a monopoly on votes from the poorest in our country, nor are they the only party to have instigated policies which help support our poorest.

FreeCheeseInMouseTrap · 12/12/2019 21:23

@charlottespleb. That’s what much of the left is now, angry woke, social justice warriors. Anything deviating from the PC line is wrongthink. Ironically, these so called liberals are the most interact bunch.

Stegosaurus1990 · 12/12/2019 21:24

Agree. Bloody martyrs. Give it a rest!

marshmallowss · 12/12/2019 21:24

I completely agree! And I laughed my head off when I see people are using quotes from Frankie Boyle to justify their voting. Because he likes pensioners and kids....
hang on, wasn't he reported to OFCOM for his comments on Katie Price's disabled son, Harvey?! And hasn't he been known for his disgusting comments on children with Down Syndrome. Oh yeah, he's really all for the kids.

It is seriously fucking me off. Labour scares me the most out of any party tbh.

andpancakesforbreakfast · 12/12/2019 21:24

I think Labour voters feel like this because their support for Labour comes from the desire to see everyone's welfare improved, not just their own.

pretty sure the majority of Tory supporters comes from exactly the same place.

Jenala · 12/12/2019 21:25

I'm with you OP. It's doing my head in.
Apart from one brexiteer friend who is equally annoying, my Facebook is a total Corbyn loving leftie Labour bubble. To them, anyone who doesn't vote Labour is a child hating racist who wants all disabled people to lose their benefits. Not being able to vote for Labour in it's current form does not mean I'll be voting for the fucking Tories in their current lying, wheedling bullshitting form either!! Why can no one see that??

They are all posting like they've made this amazing moral choice, they're voting "for the children" or "for those less fortunate" etc and don't seem to realise they look like utter twats boasting about what kind and loving people they are on social media. It's ironic, there's no sense of being humble AT ALL.

The very worst is when I see posts about how racist the Tories are...that may or may not be so, I'm sure many are, I'm not going to vote for them. But under Corbyn, old school antisemitism is thriving whether you want to call it a smear campaign or not. It simply is. Corbyn has been on the wrong side of it for decades and the evidence is clearly there, and his leadership has emboldened an influx of antisemites. This is a great (slightly long read) by a woman I respect outlining it and it's clear as fucking day.

I know people don't really care about anti semitism which is scary on it's own to me but at least admit that rather than deny it's obvious prevalence.

I can respect someone's decision to vote for Labour anyway, due to feeling other issues are a priority. I find it distasteful and disagree, but I can respect someone acknowledging they simply feel Labour is the lesser of two evils. But I feel really fucking angry when people act like they are taking the moral high ground by voting Labour and that anyone who doesn't is an inexplicable bigoted moron. It's not true. Dislike of Corbyn does not equal love of Johnson and vice versa, and voting Labour doesn't mean someone isn't racist or bigoted.

Its frustrating as it shuts down discussion too. A sea of people saying that anyone who disagrees with the tribe is a terrible person has a way of doing that.

Thanks OP I needed a rant.

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 12/12/2019 21:26

I think Labour voters feel like this because their support for Labour comes from the desire to see everyone's welfare improved, not just their own.

I think you live in an echo chamber if you think only Labour voters care about other people.

MaxNormal · 12/12/2019 21:26

I agree OP - people are so obsessed with minorities - they get plenty of help

Oh dear...

CharlottesPleb · 12/12/2019 21:27

So I'm not sure why Tory voters constantly try to act like the underdogs. You're not. You've been in government for nearly a decade and we're about to have yet another tory government.

"Youve been in government"... not really. Lots of the people holding their noses and voting Conservative are doing that because it's the only viable option for them. For instance those whose own party is all but destroyed or must be stopped.
