To ask DD2 to change her cat’s name

busybarbara · 07/12/2019 17:15

I’m posting this on behalf of my DD who is too mortified. She’s expecting her own DC (my DGC) and had picked out a name that only a few of us knew. Let’s say it’s “Honey” (it’s not but just for example)

DD2 out of the blue has got a kitten and has named it Honey, of course.. Confused DD1 is mortified and has asked me to see if I can get DD2 to change the name of the kitten! AIBU to try to do this?

Yes I’ve seen all the “two names in the same family” threads and have no problem with it when it’s people but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

OP posts:

Omg she shagged her sisters ex but the sister is the bad guy for stealing the name for her cat! I feel sorry for her!

Whoops75 · 07/12/2019 23:15

Stay out of it OP

They are adults

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 07/12/2019 23:22

I assume that DD1 is mortified because she’s only just realised that Sooty was a stupid name to give a baby.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 07/12/2019 23:25

Though I’m a bit baffled by the universal horror about having a baby with your sister’s ex. Never had to consider this situation because DB and I are both straight but surely the key is in the word “ex”. If DD2 was no longer in a relationship with him when he got together with DD1 then what’s the problem? (Obviously if there was an overlap then that’s a whole other kettle of live lobsters)

StepAwayFromGoogle · 07/12/2019 23:29

@IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly - I think you may find yourself in a moral minority of one on this...

StepAwayFromGoogle · 07/12/2019 23:30

But either way, it isn't real, and I'm gutted - because this thread had real promise...

MrsToothyBitch · 07/12/2019 23:35

I reckon the "ex" was perhaps quite vocal about preferred names & Dd2 has purposely used this to her advantage with DKitten. If Dd1 is that bothered, she can fix it.

holidayhelpp · 08/12/2019 00:56

Epic drip feed there op Hmm

TotalRecall · 08/12/2019 01:10

As the scapegoat of the family, I can spot a golden child a mile away.

#teamdd2! Grin

BodenGate · 08/12/2019 01:28

I'm really grateful OP took the time to give us an example of what a name is. Would've been totally lost otherwise.

😂😂😂

ferrier · 08/12/2019 01:35

a cat is not going to come if you call it, so I dont think your daughter has any grounds for being overly worried.

Every cat I've had has come on call, but agreed ... it wouldn't bother me if my cat and my dn had the same name.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 08/12/2019 01:47

Dear oh dear.
The moggy's name is the least of your worries.

Cluckyandconfused · 08/12/2019 01:49

@JavaQ - I named my dog Daisy and love the name so much I have considered using it again if I have a girl 😂

SouthwarkSkaters · 08/12/2019 01:49

DD shares her name with DSIL’s cat - cat was here first, we didn’t remember it when naming child at least not until DSIL texted back saying ‘did you name her after the cat?. In the rare event they are in the same room, we say X the girl or X the cat.

On a similar note, I was watching a tv show this week and the lady in it said she was named after the witch in Bewitched, then her mum turns around and says ‘no, you were named after the horse’ Grin

BillHadersNewWife · 08/12/2019 02:19

I had a friend at DD1s school who told me she and her DC wanted to call their new dog the same name as DD1!

I was amused but said...er...what about calling it Ruby instead? And she said "Yes! That's a lovely name!"

So Ruby it was! Weird when you think about it.

BellyButton85 · 08/12/2019 02:35

I can't be bothered reading the whole thread but I would put money on the name being Luna. Please don't allow this name to be given to anything but an animal. Bloody ridiculous name for a human

1forAll74 · 08/12/2019 02:54

Quite a few dogs and cats in my family. are named after male and female family members, it's rather nice I think. There is even a rabbit pet named after my son somewhere.

MyShinyWhiteTeeth · 08/12/2019 03:06

3rd scenario is DD1 knew DD2 liked the name and decided to use it herself for her child because she likes to steal everything of her sister's.

Do you always get involved and take DD1's side? What are the usual dynamics?

elmosducks · 08/12/2019 03:25

Ugh. Don't get involved

EL8888 · 08/12/2019 03:32

@BercowsFestiveFlamingo yep

Hmmm does DD1 want some shoes or car keys as well from get sister. As the least favoured child she won't get much sympathy from me....

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles 😂🤣😂

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 08/12/2019 04:16

Stop getting involved. DD1 is with her sisters ex, not used to be ex. He will always be her ex. It’s cheeky to even ask DD2 to change her cats name, I don’t care if it’s just a cat DD1 sounds like a precious golden child Grin

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 08/12/2019 08:44

it hurt my feelings and I never knew why she did it.

Maybe the dog was ugly - that doesn't mean that she didn't love it with a passion!

At least you have a nice nickname.

My name is shite and I wish I had the bottle to change it donkey's years ago - I'm 66 now so it hardly seems worth the effort.

It's not even an unusual or interesting shite name. it's just shite.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 08/12/2019 08:46

I can't be bothered reading the whole thread but I would put money on the name being Luna. Please don't allow this name to be given to anything but an animal. Bloody ridiculous name for a human

Especially if their surname is even remotely like "Tick"

DoTheNextRightThing · 08/12/2019 08:50

Considering your DD1 shagged, married, and is now procreating with her sister's ex, the least she can do is let DD2 name her cat whatever she wants.

PixieN · 08/12/2019 08:59

@KerplunkyPants 😂 at Rover, Tiddles and Fluffy. MN is comedy gold.
