To ask DD2 to change her cat’s name

I’m posting this on behalf of my DD who is too mortified. She’s expecting her own DC (my DGC) and had picked out a name that only a few of us knew. Let’s say it’s “Honey” (it’s not but just for example)

DD2 out of the blue has got a kitten and has named it Honey, of course.. Confused DD1 is mortified and has asked me to see if I can get DD2 to change the name of the kitten! AIBU to try to do this?

Yes I’ve seen all the “two names in the same family” threads and have no problem with it when it’s people but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

OP posts:

Maybe DD2 and her boyfriend decided they would call their first child Maisy (or whatever the name is) and now that the boyfriend is with DD1 he still wants that name, which DD1 has already given to a cat because her sister gets her fella and a baby so surely she can call the cat Maisy?

VenusTiger · 07/12/2019 20:43

Not a single thing offensive about a cat OP and “mortified” really? How bloody precious. Who will meet DD2’s cat OP? Why does it even matter.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/12/2019 20:43

Imagine if DD1 was having twins. Would DD2 have 2 kittens, a kitten and a puppy. The mind boggles.

Witchend · 07/12/2019 20:44

I feel like this might be a name liked by the ex/new husband, dd2 knows and has decided to get a kitten and claim the name to throw a spanner in the works
In which case how does dd1 feel that no only has she her sisters cast off ex, but also her cast off name?

sweeny a micropig and a parrot.

KindergartenKop · 07/12/2019 20:45

My friend had a cat and named it X. Three years later she had a baby and they loved the name X so much they named the baby that too.

And the 2019 Award for Biggest Dripfeed to wind up MN goes to ......... 🏆

Sagradafamiliar · 07/12/2019 20:45

A cat's name isn't going to impact the family dynamics is it? 😂 there'll be tension round the Xmas dinner table no doubt but you can't blame that on Felix.

undercoveraessedai · 07/12/2019 20:48

My cats have human names. I know humans with the same names. No awkwardness anywhere, although my family mostly have insane names anyway.

Cats do come when they're called and I think it's unfair to ask DD2 to rename her cat, same as if it was her baby she'd named - she got there first, so DD1 + husband can either name the baby that anyway or pick a new name.

Well she was there first with the bloke as well but that didn't stop DD1.

Janedoughnut · 07/12/2019 20:53

but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

I shouldn't worry OP as I doubt the cat will mind.

DaphneFanshaw · 07/12/2019 21:01

Oh it’s a shame the op isn’t coming back, this has so much potential. Even if you couldn’t make it up.

KitKat1985 · 07/12/2019 21:09

Their relationship is a little awkward though as DD1’s husband (and father of the child) used to be DD2’s ex

Holy fuck.

eaglejulesk · 07/12/2019 21:15

I don't see the problem frankly. What does it matter if they have the same name?

ShinyRuby · 07/12/2019 21:17

My dds name is used ALL the time as a pets name. There's one in every group of animals! It's not that you should be worrying about, more the relationships between your dds. That can't be easy for dd2 & I think she can call the kitten whatever she likes.

frumpety · 07/12/2019 21:18

Is this like that episode of Motherland , where it turns out DD1 actually went out with DD2's husband at school when they were 15 ?

Singlebutmarried · 07/12/2019 21:21

I know someone that had a cat called wilhelmina and then met and married a human wilhelmina.

The cats name stars the same.

Honeyroar · 07/12/2019 21:23

If they don’t get on particularly well it won’t really matter if the cat has the same name- they won’t be spending much time there. Plus the cat isn’t going to be at family parties etc! Further down the road, if relations between them got better, they could tell the child that the cat was named after them. I can’t see how it’s such a big deal/drama really.

HoppingPavlova · 07/12/2019 21:32

Hilarious. I’d keep well out of it OP.

viques · 07/12/2019 21:34

What do you mean by holy fuck KitKat 1985 are you telling us that double dipping daddy is a priest.

lindsayincroydon · 07/12/2019 21:50

Sorry, I know this doesn't answer your question, I just thought it might amuse you.

I visited an aunt I hadn't seen for a couple of years. She had a new dog, a really, really horribly ugly one, not even lovably ugly.

Guess what she called it? Lindy, which is my nickname that everyone calls me.

I was mortified and left very quickly, and never spoke to her again.

Lol, but it hurt my feelings and I never knew why she did it.

Valanice1989 · 07/12/2019 21:57

Why is your elder daughter mortified that her sister has given her kitten the same name that she planned to give her baby? What's embarrassing about that?

Surfskatefamily · 07/12/2019 21:59

It's a cat not a child...tell dd1 to let it go. Continue to name her baby as planned

kateandme · 07/12/2019 22:03

frumpety thankyou!!! ive been going on the bloody iplayer knowing there is something in need to catch up on.that's it. Grin

Auradal · 07/12/2019 22:35

What do you mean by holy fuck KitKat 1985 are you telling us that double dipping daddy is a priest.

Haha. "Double dipping daddy" PMSL.
That'll be the OP's next drip feed.
And the cat's called Mary or Joseph.

RichTwoTurkeyFriend · 07/12/2019 23:10

I can hear Jeremy Kyle crying from here that his show ended before a story of this caliber could be broadcast.
