I went into my local shop this morning and the female shop assistant was wearing a Xmas jumper. Not unusual for the time of year you might think. A black jumper with pretty red and green sparkly bits including bells.
But underneath the design were the words in big gold letters, 'Gingle Bells'.
I said nothing because I know the woman and didn't want to spoil her day. But really, this is right up there with redundant apostrophes and other language crimes.
Still wish I'd said something now Xmas Confused.

Arrives late to the ragging on op.

I've got an O Level in English.-- Literature and language don't you know!! Beams proudly--

RedPanda2 · 07/12/2019 10:57

OP I'm so embarrassed for you. It clearly wasn't misspelled.
Pointing out peoples grammar is incredibly classist and makes you a dick.

Alas, it tends to happen when you brag you've got a first in English . . .

MinervaSaidThat · 07/12/2019 12:03

@JesusMaryAndJosepheen

Grin at least she had the baby brain excuse!

MinervaSaidThat · 07/12/2019 12:04

I remember a poster who complained about everyone’s spelling and grammer!

calmama · 07/12/2019 12:28

Sorry, MinervaSaidThat, but I believe you mean “grammar”. Of course if you had a first in English you’d know that.

Always good to get in the spirit of correct spelling.

@calmama I think the misspelling of grammar was the whole point of her post.

Panpastels · 07/12/2019 13:05

Oh OP! Blush

FishBulb · 07/12/2019 13:20

I haven't a first in English, but I'm developing a thirst for ginglish.

GingleJangleScarecrow · 07/12/2019 14:32

@calmama are you the OP with a namechange?

FizzyGreenWater · 07/12/2019 14:43

Oooh calmama, by your spectacular missing of the point there I deduce that you MIGHT just have a First in English - am I right?!

FizzyGreenWater · 07/12/2019 14:44

If calmama IS op (and the posting style is soooo similar) then that is further absolute comedy gold!!!!!!!

Grin Grin Grin

AFairlyHardAvocado · 07/12/2019 15:08

I think OP and @calmama should have a joint Christmas party and vet all items of clothing on entry. They could definitely spot all the puns. That tends to happen when you've a first in English.

Which I actually do, but funnily enough it hasn't made me unable to laugh at myself when I make a mistake. Especially such a gincredible one.

Slat3 · 07/12/2019 15:09

Xmas Grin hilarious thread. I read the OP first, thought oh that’s weird maybe her nan or something made it & spelt it wrong...
Clicked off the page then 15 mins later had to come back because I thought of the gin! In fairness I don’t drink & I don’t have a first in English so...

TryingAndFailing39 · 07/12/2019 15:19

Sorry, MinervaSaidThat, but I believe you mean “grammar”. Of course if you had a first in English you’d know that.

Oh dear if this is OP with a name change and she’s just blatantly missed another joke then this is too good to be true 😂

RedPanda2 · 07/12/2019 15:58

@DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh GrinGrinGrin

icedgem85 · 07/12/2019 17:32

It’s a pun! In no way comparable to apostrophe misuse, which is rightly punishable by death ;)

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 07/12/2019 17:34

First thing I thought of was Gin too, didn't even cross my mind that was a spelling error and I'm usually a total spelling pedant! Grin
Not read thread but I bet you're feeling a right festive wally if it is gin related lol

Itsallgonewoowoo · 07/12/2019 17:37

Nipping back to just beg for Calmama to be the OP, pleeeeeeese

(Btw I too have a first in English, but I am a terrible speller and scattergun my commas wildly, I did however get the gin pun).

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 07/12/2019 17:44

Oooh the Mumsnet claws are out!! No need for the sarky comments. No, I don't miss puns and if there had been a glass or bottle on the jumper it would have been obvious. We're not all obsessed by gin (and I'm a gin drinker)

Hmm I'm not obsessed by gin (can't stand the stuff) but it's clearly a gin thing. You don't miss puns, when you did miss this one? Okey dokey then lol No need to go defensive just because it's pointed out you missed the joke - accept with grace and say "yes, maybe I was a numpty" Grin
DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 07/12/2019 17:59

We all have our cross to bear . . . Grin

MinervaSaidThat · 07/12/2019 18:50

Sorry, MinervaSaidThat, but I believe you mean “grammar”. Of course if you had a first in English you’d know that.

Hilarious! Didn't realise I needed to add a disclaimer with the correct spelling, thought the joke was obvious!

Clearly I've rubbed the OP Calmama the wrong way Grin

Toomuchtrouble4me · 07/12/2019 18:59

There’s a lot of Xmas/gin related humour about this year.
I think it’s ok, not really getting your issue or did you not see the joke?
